Don McLean was GENIUS! So many songs in our sub-consciousness that were his brainchildren. Soooo good, I heard this on a best-of this morning and it nearly brought me to tears, and that don't happen often. Nice stuff
I love the simplicity of this song, especially in this video with Don singing it with only his guitar as back up. And the title is intriguing. It's as if he's continuing an intimate conversation with a loved one. Beautiful.

@MegaLandogriffin You're not the brightest are u now? I don't make fun of good music. I make fun of nostalgic moaning. Sure, good music was produced back in the day. But you know what, good music is produced everyday. Oh and btw, just because I have my own opinion doesn't mean I like rap :)
@MegaLandogriffin Why is it crap? I thought the 1990s was the most creative time for songwriting personally and the 00s decade is kind of like a watered down version of the 90s. Pop music is atrociously bad, but Don McLean was not really a pop or mainstream artist during his day. I mean he had hits, but most of his work is relatively unknown by people other than enthusiasts of his music. So people didn't seem to give a damn about "good music" then either.
@andrevdmeulen It is pretty annoying to hear people whine about "how much better 60s music was and how awful music is today!" Yea pop music today is atrociously bad, I mean Big Sean's the Ass Song has got to be the worst song ever written behind California Gurls by Katy Perry. But there are some nice bands out right now if you're willing to look for them, Dawes, Fitz and the Tantrums, Alberta Cross, Winterpills and then there's music from the 90s which people tend to ignore altogether.
I've always wondered who inspired Don to write this and his other songs about love and/or heartache, so I tried finding out about his first marriage to a mixed race woman, but all I could find was that she was of mixed race, maybe African-American.
@emofolkie I think folk music would probably have to be one of his biggest influences. Pete Seeger was one of his mentors, he was a pretty big idol for folk enthusiasts.
@emofolkie He's put out some albums with covers of American folk music too, songs like Cripple Creek, Red Wing, This Little Light of Mine. He also plays the banjo really well.
@MsFelixtheCat50 I know. I've been a big fan for years, but my favorite of all his songs is Winter Has Me in its Grip which is not at all famous. I love his live version of that in his Solo album. Too bad not many people know that beautiful song.
@emofolkie Yea I love that one too, I think Falling Through Time is my favorite one. It makes me sad that most people aren't aware of his other work, but I guess it just shows you how good his stuff really is. Harry Nilsson is another underrated singer songwriter from the 60s and 70s that no one seems to know about either. I find the less people are aware of a songwriter, the better that songwriter is.
Don McLean has been underrated too much. Some of his songs have been recorded by so many other artists that it's hard to remember who sang them first, and in this case, who wrote them.
@Hyphenate001 You're so right. He's underrated when he should be recognized as one of the greatest singer-songwriters ever. It's the fault of the record companies in the 70s that didn't publicize his songs and albums, except for American Pie, largely because he refused to give up to them the publishing rights to his songs. They clearly got the US media on their side and against Don, but they couldn't control the fans and the foreign media that put talent over such monkey business.
@Elaine32909 Ah, but Don McLean write the song. Each artist puts a different emotion into their version of the song. Don McLean's version comes from the songwriter himself, so what he puts into his version comes from his experiences. I love Perry Como's version, too, but he doesn't have the personal investment to add to the song.
@Elaine32909 I appreciate your loyalty & reminder of who wrote it....a very gifted & talented songwriter-performer....some of my preferences depends on whom I had first heard sing it & how often I heard it. I love Josh Groban's performance of "Vincent" but it is McLean's performance & lyrics that haunted me for a long, long time before I even knew he was singing about Van Gogh.
Elvisz, Perry Como, Shirley Bassey and many others sing this song so beautiful but I have to go with the writer, Don Mclean. I will take Elvis 2nd. This song brings back memories and my eyes water every time I hear it.
@bauttar You are so incredibly lucky! I haven't seen him perform down in Florida in years, but my wife and I have a deal that whenever he or her Elton John is within 500 miles of our home, we go!. I've been following him for 40 years and he has written some beautiful and amazing songs.
@Dawniemay27 she is from Philippines A.K.A. Asia's Song Bird now she is pregnant and married with singer and composer Mr. Ogie Alcasid. She is the best singer in the Philippines and the idols of all idols here.
The song "Killing Me Softly" was written about Don McLean - The words were written by Norman Gimbel and set to music by Charles Fox, tailored specifically for the gentle unaffected voice of a young folk singer from the West Coast named Lori Leiberman, who wrote a poem about her experience of hearing Don McLean in concert.
Don't web site has the story & clips of Lori singing the song are on youtube.

Can anyone who has a spare 3 minutes please listen to my song "In My Dreams" - Gordon Wiseman.
I don't like spamming on other people's songs at all but i'm just a young fella trying to get myself heard and this is one small way of doing so.
Fans of melancholic, sad, acoustic guitar songs might just like it.
Thank you for reading.
Now please enjoy the song you came here to listen to :)
