HMS Eagle was a fleet carrier not an escort carrier, even though her aircraft capacity by 1940 was only 24. She did sterling work in the Med before being sunk, having been hit by 4 torpedoes during the Pedastal Convoy of August 1942.

I can't say it helped the Italian sympathizers all that much. Still one of the Axis biggest mistakes not to invade Malta right away in the summer/fall of 1940. Became a pretty big thorn later on.....
