Both the Western and Russian Press did poor jobs covering this war. I was in a Georgian village 20 km from Poti when it was bombed. Two days after this occurred Russia was still denying it had bombed Poti, and Russia Today (which I actually do enjoy watching) went along with this rhetoric. What happened in Tskinvali was horrific and the Western press definitely ignored this. But, remember, Russian media did the same thing while Georgia was being pillaged.
