what a great sounding truck, but doesn't that give you a headache at the end of the day? I used to drive an ERF with the exhaust stack right behind the drivers window (day cab) I loved the sound, but listening to it all day long was a pain.
I guess it's because European roads tend to be narrower and smaller, you can't take a longnose Peterbilt with a custom sleeper through the streets of Rome can you lol

@xXDJIndeedXx the jake brakes CAN stop the truck, but it is NOT reccomended because you will stall out. and you can choose low, medium, or high with the jakes.

@crazycougar23 it takes the exhaust gasses and limits the amount of gas that is comming out of the exhaust. so say half of the exhaust is going out, the other half is being sent back to the engine making it slow down since it cant blow out all the gas. if that makes sense. to make it really simple it slows the engine down. hope that helped. just an uneducated deffinition
@quadkid4 not quite. Jake Brakes allow all of the exhaust gasses to release. WIthout them, during the compression stroke, the air is compressed, slowing the engine down, but is then released on the power stroke, so it returns most of the energy it took away and the engine doesn't slow down much. With a Jake brake, the air is compressed, again slowing the engine down, but then released by a second exhaust valve before the air expands again, preventing that energy from returning to the engine.

I didnt read the commets til i saw the downhill to the river and thought, I know this road! bad ass. not a fan of the detroit but they do have a hellva jake brake noise. if you seen my video, thats when i first started driving truck so mind the gear grinding, now ive gotten accustom to shifting. the one in the video i have is 2001 Pete C-15 550HP 379EXHD. I now drive a 1995 Pete 3406 379EXHD hauling hay.

There's no doubt the Series 60 has got the noisiest jakes out of the big 3 whether they've got mufflers or not. BTW I don't think you can can Detroit in KW and Pete anymore because Daimler Benz own them and they are now a rival company.

Jakes may work as well with mufflers I do agree on that point. But a major plus by taking them off was fuel mileage, gained nearly a quarter mpg by just removing the mufflers.
@pete379x4778 WRONG. Taking off the mufflers on a properly designed OEM exhaust system has NO effect on fuel economy. It's just squirrels that do such things and give the trucking industry a black eye.
@JGMagoo Not on this particular truck I did not notice much difference in mpg's. But I currently drive a c-15 acert. But by putting straights on it went from about 4.8 to about 5.1 or so. So I can say after 3 months the pipes paid for themselves. Also this is my last post about this discussion because this is going nowhere :) Happy trucking!
@JGMagoo You have no idea what your talking about! You most certainly gain fuel mileage when you don't have a restrictive exhaust. The more air the more power... In fact, some people gain as much as .5mpg.

The engine brake "which is the whisper series" sounds more like a "dynatard" than a jake. Like cowboy101ist said "Loud Pipes Save Lives" is especially important on motorcycles. It was assholes like this that caused legislation to be introduced in the Colorado legislature to OUTLAW JAKE BRAKES!
We spent nearly 3-years and hundreds of thousands of dollars to finally defeat this legislation, brought forward by well-meaning citizens who disliked the noise made by truckers like the one in this video who take the mufflers off of their trucks.

There's no doubt the Series 60 has got the noisiest jakes out of the big 3 whether they've got mufflers or not. BTW I don't think you can can Detroit in KW and Pete anymore because Daimler Benz own them and they are now a rival company.

Jakes may work as well with mufflers I do agree on that point. But a major plus by taking them off was fuel mileage, gained nearly a quarter mpg by just removing the mufflers.

@pete379x4778 WRONG. Taking off the mufflers on a properly designed OEM exhaust system has NO effect on fuel economy. It's just squirrels that do such things and give the trucking industry a black eye.

@JGMagoo Not on this particular truck I did not notice much difference in mpg's. But I currently drive a c-15 acert. But by putting straights on it went from about 4.8 to about 5.1 or so. So I can say after 3 months the pipes paid for themselves. Also this is my last post about this discussion because this is going nowhere :) Happy trucking!

@JGMagoo You have no idea what your talking about! You most certainly gain fuel mileage when you don't have a restrictive exhaust. The more air the more power... In fact, some people gain as much as .5mpg.

@pete379x4778 FIRST RESPONSE>>> I agree with you "pete" as diesels need un- interrupted flow for max performance. But unfortunately we have disturbing neighbors who say that "noise" is a pollution. And they think that a little smoke out of our pipes are more polluting than small cars. Maybe they should go through SMOG emission classes to find out who really pollutes the atmosphere. I give you a hint "something with 4 wheels".

@pete379x4778 LAST RESPONSE>>> I've been a company driver for a few years and my 2009 Freightliner day cab with Detroit 60 series with the new 2007 stringent EPA requirements. The engine brake "which is the whisper series" sounds more like a "dynatard" than a jake. Like cowboy101ist said "Loud Pipes Save Lives" is especially important on motorcycles. It saved me more than a few times. Your ride sounds good, clean, and best of all, saves on fuel... even so slightly is great. (Trucker Bill)

I live in the mountains of Colorado, (USA) and have been in the truck business for nearly 40-years.
It was assholes like this that caused legislation to be introduced in the Colorado legislature to OUTLAW JAKE BRAKES!
We spent nearly 3-years and hundreds of thousands of dollars to finally defeat this legislation, brought forward by well-meaning citizens who disliked the noise made by truckers like the one in this video who take the mufflers off of their trucks.
Leave the mufflers ON!!

@JGMagoo first of all, if you say you live in the mountains....the damn jake brake was designed to assist trucks comin off the MOUNTAINS. before you judge anyone an ASSHOLE...look in the mirror and do research on what you re tryin to ban.....that or move back to the city. oh by the way....Muffler or no muffler, you are still gonna hear the jake break.
