Burdge-bug is a popular artist on deviantart. However, she isn't very well known to anyone except mostly the community on deviantart. If you were really a fan of the Decemberists and/or this song, you'd be happy that they were getting popularity. Brigid made an entire picture based on this song, and promoted it.

Sometimes, to hear about something, you've got to hear about it from somebody else. I doubt every discovery of anything you've ever heard you found on your own.

My point is just to take some pride in your originality. Music is a very personalized art form, and everyone has their own tastes.
