1:15-1:32, wow now that's burning some steel there! Some of the younger generation look at the E60s as ugly? I think the boxy body style reminds me of the cars from the 1960s (even though the E60s were built in the mid 70s). They were handsome, looking giants with clean body lines . Though efficient, to me the AEM-7 and newer HH units look more like overpriced Hot Wheels vehicles with train wheels.
When I was young I too liked the E60's..... but now that I'm older I see how ugly and obsolete they are.... LONG LIVE THE HHP8's.........LOL (Big Fan of the HHP8's)...LOL
interesting I have never known Amtrak of using E60's before... but they're interesting looking units sad that they replaced these with AEM-7's and HHP8's
Brings back memories. When I first started taking Amtrak from Cornwells Heights to Newark back in 2000, the E-60s were usually on the point. Nowadays it's the ol' AEM-7 (or whatever their official classification is these days).
Bunches of those older amtrak cars are visible randomly along parts of the NEC above new brunswick on sidings. One of them is actually parked on the southern side wall of the switching yard as you enter penn station from nj
As a British railfan (and a HUGE fan of US electric locos from GG1's & E44's - AMTRAK HHP's), I am ignorant of the E60's problems - what were they? Was it these problems that dictated the use of an 8,000hp loco on a measly 3-car train? Was their weight an issue? (British electric locos generally had a power output of 5,000hp, but weighed only 76 tons). Finally, did the BM&LP E60's suffer similar problems? Cheers! p.s. GREAT video!!
At 193 tons, they were overweight and tended to yaw severely sideways, putting extra stress on the track. The FRA restricted them to 90mph operation after the problems were examined. I did ride behind one in 1983 that 110 mph! That was a thrill. Two have been preserved. Amtrak #603 and New Jersey Transit #958.
Is that the Tacony Palmyra Bridge in the background or the burlington Bristol? Whichever, still a great shot. Keep up the good work. I've seen all your 95 videos...amazing stuff. Brings back great memories.
Wow! France had already been running its TGV for a couple of decades before your video. I hope we catch up to them some time soon.

Does Amtrak still use them?????
trainboy94 3 years ago
Nope Amtrak stopped using them in 2003. All of them have been scrapped with the exception of 603. The only surviving NJT E-60 is 958.

E-60's used to sway all over the place but could they could pull a whole yard's worth of cars while hardly ever breaking a sweat.

Amtrak began to refurbish the E60s when they were withdrawn. They could have lasted for several more years.

Amtrak was using the MARC coaches for extra capacity on their Clocker trains.

Enjoyable! Inspite of their problems, those E60s could flex almost as much muscle as GG1s. I'm glad that at least one E60 is going to be preserved.
