The joke is that he gets mad and goes into this really long winded explanation of everything you can call him (using parts of his name) but you DON'T have to call him Johnson. See? Not too funny by today's standards, sure but at one point it was at least chuckle-worthy.

Humor was different in the old days. A lot of things were funny back then that arent funny now, and it isnt because of a lack of creativity in the old days. Rowan Atkinson (Black Adder and Mr. Bean) did an informative speech about it, I cant explain it like he does. It has to do with changing audience perceptions and experiences. You can see it in horror movies as well. Exorcist used to make entire theaters freak out/puke/have nightmares, etc. Its still scary, but only 1/10th THAT scary.

It's not funny here because there's no lead-in; it works a lot better in the middle of a scene when someone refers to him as Johnson and he has to break the whole flow of the scene to go on this tirade.

Then the goal for any other characters is not to call him Johnson again. They ultimately fail, and Johnson has to interrupt the scene again. It gets funnier the more times it happens.
