  • great version.....thanks

  • 2 microphones eh??

  • @diegobagdarrel Stereo :)

  • rip john ... well miss ure awesome drumming dude!!!!!!!

  • John was a solid drummer love all rush saw the in Cleveland rocked

  • Wow killer. This is the reason I love You Tube. Without this site I never would have seen this probably. Rutsey was killer....

  • This is nice to see the tip of the iceberg. how much more of this show was recorded?

  • Damn.. even at that time they were great! ;-)

And it's cool to see Geddy and Alex when they were at my age.. (20 years old) xD

  • if anyone has a gibson es 335 they want to sell to me with block inlays slim neck and sunburst or tabacco burst finish let me know.

  • Wat is this taken from, like a showcase or sumthin? Kinda funny how Ruts introduces all the songs. His career was stolen from him... FUCK DIABETES!

  • Such a huge roaring sound from such a tiny band !

  • Thank you!

  • Woah! Flashback! These boys played at R.H. King in Scarborough when I was there.

They had such an influence on me that I actually had the printed lyrics to this song folded up and tucked into my wallet.

Small world, wouldn't want to paint it: My best friend married into Neil Peart's family and things got tough. Over twenty years later, and about twenty years ago.

Damn. I'm 48 years old now. If you're younger, grab every memory you can. They don't last and they tend to get lost.

    Love you all.

  • @garcemac

Great story! My girlfriend and I were watching some other Rush videos, my gf is 13yrs younger than me and didn't grow up listening to Rush. I was just telling her the first time I saw Rush was in Toronto in '77 I was 12yrs old. My 16yr old sister was asked on a date to go to the concert, the only way she was allowed to go is if i went with them. hahaha. I love Rush, lost track of how many times i've seen them now. Still have all the vinyl and still listen to it.

    Take care

  • There is ALLOT of talent here. Alex and Ged are already playing with absolute comfort with and mastery of their instruments and music ...and yet they are HOSERS ey!?!

  • @badback22 eh! and what does being a hoser have to do with it eh? like take off eh, badbackbacon.

  • @iggyover Hey Dad, Bob broke your beer!

  • Comment removed

  • @iggyover Ooooo Take off 'ey! ...It is well know that hosers from their neck of the woods and beyond have tried to play guitar, drums and bass with there skidoo mits on 'ey, so they are doin good, is all im sayin :D

  • @badback22 Rock on you hoser !! Take off eh !!

  • rutsey was ill and replaced by peart and passed soon afterwords

  • @kamnr Rutsey didnt pass away until 2008

  • goddamn geddy lee looks like susan b anthony

    this is an amazing video

  • This was pretty cool to watch. I guess the reason Neil's not playing it is because Geddy wrote the lyrics, even though the song was on Fly By Night.

  • I love this version. So it was written and performed before Neil was in the band. John sounds spot on perfect for hard rock.

  • thanks God for youtube and the posters to see all this great vintage video footage that I would've never seen on MTV, VH1 etc...

  • wow. this song was put on fly by night. which was released in 1975!!!!!!!!!

  • Alex Lifeson looks like (original) Ultravox guitarist Robin Simon! I like both bands....though this early Rush is a bit derivative of Jimmy Page, etc, I like it.

  • john is awesome and rock his soul but peart was a better drummer

  • thank god for peart

  • Rest in Peace John.....

  • Awesome! Rutsey was a good solid drummer.

  • wow I never heard or knew that rutsey played on this song, what a treat. I like Neil's adaptation better tho, only cuz I heard it first I recon.

  • i didnt know that alex used to be thin how weird and he had long hair to

  • Comment removed

  • whats the name of the first song they played here

  • the more i hear these old videos...it seems like it was Johns band...he introduces the band and songs.....god bless his soul...

  • @clocktime11 Looks that way.... but Neil had more to say...especially on the drums!

  • The host at the end reminds me of the Charlestown Cheifs play by play man. lol Can't remember his name.

  • tryn to sound like kiss

  • It is great to see footage with John Rutsey because he obviously was overshadowed by his replacement. I think he was a solid drummer for Rush at the time when they were a straight ahead hard rock band who were influenced by Zeppelin, Sabbath and Cream. When Neil Peart came in, the band went into another level both musically and lyrically. I do not think Rush would be what they are today if Rutsey did not leave but I think they would have been successful in a smaller capacity. RIP John.

  • john was a great drummer. working man is a testament of his delivery and raw talent. john was to write all of rushes music. it was said that one night john trashed most of the second albums writings due to he was not happy with what he wrote. the rest of the band was pleased with what they saw, and unhappy that he trashed most of what he wrote. complications of diabetes and the stress of touring took its toll. the remainder of what he wrote was part of the second album. R.I.P JOHN RUTSEY..

  • I'd still rather be Rashing than Bashing!

Not that Rutsey was so droll, but it lets Slobovich shine!

  • @SuperMegaUberGenius This comment WINS!

  • I always liked the tone Ged got out of his P-bass. Of course, not as much as the Rick in later years.

  • Rutsey was a great drummer too bad he had diabetes I would have liked to see what they would have done for a second album with him.........It's just neil peart is one of the greatest drummers ever so rutsey go forgotten fast........but he was really good.........I love the first album.....................I just saw rush 2011 tour by the way.........they were great awesome in fact....................

  • Anyone else like the drumming here better than on the album?

  • good early posting of this band. Niel made a big difference in this band.

  • Um, wow. Neil playing this is totally different than John.

  • Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, ( this band is beyound life) and Blah.

  • @TravenV LOL.

  • Shure Unisphere's?

  • R.I.P. John

  • !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This was when Rush was GREAT!!!!!!!!

  • @MrMutron They still are great.

  • classic shit

  • great to see rutsey on the drums he will be remembered rest in peace john

  • Makes one think of what might have been ........

  • It`s a great song, but it`s not very prog is it? It kind of sounds like something you`d hear on a Budgie b side in 1972.Still, they look good (Geddy`s shirt/bra was actually quite practical, his man boobs, whilst not exactly career defining were still pretty hot for 1974) and I think the audience got off having to do physical education for an hour or two. All in all, a very pleasant afternoon.

  • @Johnnywr - aint nothin wrong with man boobs - the future will soon see many more man boobage. Lord knows I love boobs sooo much Ive grown my own au natural.

  • what a bad ass tune...one of many!!!!

  • people lose sight of the fact that rutsey was actually a really good drummer...

  • This whole concert needs to be released officially.

  • Just three months prior to this performance, they were known as John Rutsey and the Magical Metallic Rainbow Coat of ROCK.

  • I've been listening to Rush for over 30 years and never knew they had a different drummer way back when. I feel sorry for the guy after hearing the story but wow can you tell a difference between John and Niel. Just from watching this video and listening to the performance it an amazing difference. Makes you wonder if Rush would of done as well..I mean Geddy and Alex are an awesome duo but w/ Niel on drums it's near perfection.

  • @McGuitarStar Had Rutsy not been forced to cancel tour because of diabetic problems there would have been no audition for a drummer which means Neil would have most likely found another gig. And to answer your other question of how well they would have done may have resulted in not as well since Geddy read some of Neils poems and short stories and realized why they hell he was writing lyrics. But I personally love the older Rush myself just as much as newer. Also, what if Neil had a flat tire

  • rutsy was great and im sure if he hadent had health issues would have gotten better and better

  • It's a shame that poor Precision bass met a hacksaw.

  • nooo..neil peart..will always be the best!

  • " Alex, and Geddy , And Neil " . Seriously, You Should, at least ,

Appreciate what ( John Rutsey ) brought to you, in Impecable

    Timing ! "

  • Most Sincerely, " If it wasn't for ( John Rutsey ), The Band " RUSH "

would have never Existed ! "

  • Neil peart really gave the song something, didn´t he?

  • Funny clip, but no Peart - no Rush!

  • 3:10 ... "from the Laura Secord Secondary School in St. Catherines".... that just sounds so funny

  • Hes no Neil Peart but John Rutsey was pretty good I gotta say

  • They should make a rockband rush!

  • Comment removed

  • This footage turned me into a much larger fan of the first Rush album. They were really a great band here.

  • why did Rutsey leave?

  • @thefoppa1000 he wasn't ousted, he left. Alex and John remained friends.

  • @spaden2112 sorry bad choice of words, he did drink a bit and by his actions as well as his unfortunate circumstance could not continue. Your right, they went on the record on the documentary and said he wasn't replaced for his drumming skills, strictly health reasons.

  • @thefoppa1000 Rutsey was a pretty bad diaetic and was begining to partake in the party life style.not heavily.not enough to affect his playing but it was making his diabetes worse. he left for health reasons.it wasnt because they didnt like his drumming.I believe it was his decision to leave and getty and alex backed him on it because they new thats what was best for him

  • @thefoppa1000 He was a diabetic and wasn't really taking care of himself so they thought that taking him on tour in the US would be a bad idea since he might not make it back alive (long hours, minimal sleep, heavy drinking) so they made the choice to find a new drummer. Best decision Rush ever made.

  • Geddy Lee dosen't look like girls. Girls look like Geddy Lee

  • I've always wondered why he laid so low from the public after he left rush. I would have had a website up and selling something, If I had been him. There is no way I wouldnt have tried to make money off of google searches for "john rutsey".

  • I love the use of "routine" and "number" - SO hip!

"I love big chests / I must confess..." somehow, THOSE words didn't stay in there for the FBN version...

  • I love the use of "routine" and "number" - SO hip!

  • that was cool!!

  • This is amazing...!

  • Wow, John is doing all the talking instead of Geddy! That changed when Neil joined the band.

  • i wish they would release this and other earlier appearences on DVD

  • Geddy was immaculate looking back then.

  • Gracias por subir este video , nunca habia visto a JOHN RUTSEY tocando!!.esto es realmente una joya para todos los amantes de RUSH .

  • WOW!!! Awesome footage. Never saw Rutsey play before now. Been a fan since those early days and glad to see so many others are enjoying this too.

  • WOW,thank-you SO MUCH for posting this one!! YOU RAWK!! Like so many OTHERS have said here,This is the VERY FIRST TIME I have EVER SEEN John Rutsey perform LIVE with Rush!! Up until just NOW...........All I've seen,is pics of him playing and had to "imagine" in my OWN HEAD,how his drumming style was,NOW I KNOW!! THANKS for making my DAY!!

  • 2 microphones because they were probably using a Mono PA...one mic ran to one set of amps on the left side, the other to a set on the right side. You see this a lot in the early 70's as bands played louder.

  • WATCH OUT PEART!

  • I think this is the first time I've ever seen footage of Rutsey playing, thanks for posting. RIP John!

  • Excelente!!! But I love Neil Peart!

  • its a shame that rutsey had diabetes because he was much better than that neil peart guy.

  • @kfreezy23 better than neil peart??????? I love John dont get me wrong. But he was not better than neil. Neil version of this song is way more tech

  • @dreadss64 lol i guess you dont get humor too well. no rock drummer is better than mr. neil ellwood peart.

  • @kfreezy23 unfortunately, sarcasm doesn't translate over the net. with that said, rutsey was a good drummer, but peart is a god incarnated!!

  • John left shortly after the first album (he couldn't commit to insane touring because of his diabetes). Sadly John passed away in 2008 of a diabetes related heart attack. What a great drummer, shame he couldn't stay in the band. Then again, what would Rush have become without Peart?

  • well who ever thought that the spokes person to Rush would be the drummer back 35 years ago !! Today you woun't even get a "Hello " from Neil P but Neil is an awsome drummer thats true . His personality leaves to be desired

  • @GiovaniB52 Neil is just a very shy person, he is a nice guy

  • @1337JAP He's a shy guy ?? But what i don't understand is, how shy can you be ?? I mean your 35 /36 years into your career ,the concert stage is your business, your fans are your business , he's performed over 1300 shows ....and your still shy ????!!!.. it can't be ....Im sure he's a nice guy but he must have some kind of social phobia of some kind.

And im not saying that to be rude i love the guy and his playing ,but it would so nice and great if he could meet a fan or two during a tour

  • @GiovaniB52 "I can't pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend". That's Neil. He doesn't want to crush a person's fantasy, nor does he want to be in it. He's very nervous with the public. He'll usually drive his motorcycle to wherever while Geddy and Alex are flying.

  • Holy crap! Where did you get this??????

What an awesome find! Such good footage too!

  • John comes across here as just a really nice, cool guy. I'm sure he is missed by his friends and family very much.

  • de he reallly have diabetes???? whi really knows

  • What's with the earring on Geddy's RIGHT ear?

  • Wow! This is amazing, and rare!

John almost seems like the band leader announcing the songs! What a great power rock drummer - he was great. Rest in peace John.

  • @tacomadc john was the oldest of the three and one of the origional members before geddy joined the band. just a couple of points to note.

  • @123dacat Jeff Jones was the original bassist for Rush.

  • i liked how john would introduce the songs in the beginning

  • That voice should be declared a Canadian historic landmark.

  • Recorded in my hometown...St.Catharines Ontario

  • @expertgamerz101

Sorry expertgamerz101, before I watched this video, I immediately quoted you the lyrics printed on the record sleeve of my old "Fly By Night" LP. Now that I've watched this video clip several times, it's obvious that they refined the lyrics considerably before they recorded this song. Let me give it another try:

"I've got a future that's rough, a livin' that's tough. You know what I mean. Know some guys that are cruel, some chicks'r real cool. I'm not into that scene."

  • Holy shit, was that the coolest high school of all time or what?

  • I love how the audience just sits at the end, like the Old Lady Audience on Monty Python.

  • why 02 mics?

  • @vizeeee Because its bad ass!

  • @vizeeee stereo

  • @vizeeee Recording and P.A.

  • @vizeeee It was a method used in the earlier days of loud live performances to prevent vocal mic feedback. One mic out of phase with the other would prevent feedback. Guitar feedback = good. Vocal feedback = bad. :-)

  • @vizeeee stereo bad ass!

  • @vizeeee probably one for the audience and one for

all those fine folks out there in TV land!!

  • @vizeeee XY mic technique, imagine the sound coming out from geddy lee's mouth in like a sphere, a sound pressure wave if you will, and it will hit one mic first than the other mic creating a natural delay and also creates a stereo image if they panned the microphones away from each other. It's a technique normally used on grand pianos or harps placed by the strings to capture all them all.

  • @vizeeee not a stereo P.A. 1 for the left side the other for the right

  • @vizeeee Isolates the pickup of the mic so there's less bleed from the rest of the sound going on onstage.

  • @vizeeee some videos shot in the early 70's had 2 mics for each vocalist. One would feed the PA and the other would go to the recording truck. This would help eliminate ground loops and other problems. Soon after, microphone splitters with isolation transformers became common and there wasn't a need for the extra mics.

  • @vizeeee in those days you needed two mics to get a stereo effect.

  • @vizeeee why not?

  • @vizeeee Phase cancellation so that the drum sound doesn't leak into his vocal mic.

  • @vizeeee Because Geddy's nose is a powerful cannon....a high tenor of the gods!

  • @glueforall that makes no sense, but I like it! keep the 2 mic explanations comin' ha ha.

  • @vizeeee Stereo? lol.

  • @vizeeee 1 mic to PA system the audience is listening to. 1 mic to recording console you are listening to.

  • @vizeeee : In case one of them explodes. *_*

  • @djamo1969 This comment WINS!

why would they explode you ask? Cuz of Rush's Rocket Sauce!!!!

  • @retronovation7 : That's right!

  • God blessRutsey he was the first

  • the little while ago is the time machine 2010 tour

working man reggae version slappin' the bass mon

captain shoutout for that giant wave

impatient cats got some new 1974 socks

    from the machine, whooooaaa now

    dont press dis button

  • I think this version would have been right at home on the debut. Great stuff!

  • This is really awesome. I never knew until the documentary came out that there was any footage of the Rutsey era. Yes, he was not Neil Peart, but he was definitely a good drummer. All three sounded very good, even at this early point. Although I had read that Rutsey generally introduced the songs, I never knew that he also provided backing vocals! A real treat for RUSH fans!!

  • Loved them for years, and still do!

  • it's was a different music...

  • Wow, this is the good old days. Thanks, I have always been a huge fan. I remember partying to this stuff back in the Great White North of Upper Michigan. It's great to see the resurgence of RUSH in recent years, but I've been longing to see the more of the old RUSH. Do you have any old By-Tor and the Snowdog?

  • @2112jeff Currently I don't have old footage of By-Tor and the Snowdog, but your welcome to search youtube, there's plenty of vintage Rush vintage, even of live performance of 2112 back in the 70's!

  • @retronovation7 Do you have any video of a live

    perfomance of "Jacobs Ladder"?

  • This is the coolest thing I've ever seen on YouTube,

  • JTM45 Alex has sounds GREAA88TT !!

  • I love how the audience at the end just sits there, like the black and white film of the old ladies on Monty Python. :)

  • @DevSodDribble likewise "next band please"

  • @DevSodDribble I agree and I love how it looks as if it was pieced together in post productions just syncing the clapping with almost certainly a dubbed clapping added. It's almost like a weird episode of "Happy Days" that Weezer(??) made with the guy and his Game Show host outfit.

  • Lee, Lifeson, Peart, AND Rutsey!

  • Farout Man, thanks for posting. This just took me back to 1974!

  • Rutsey wasn't ousted from Rush, he was a good drummer, excellent in fact. Listen to the album! He had to quit because of health reasons. He had a bad case of diabetes, he died from it.

  • OMG!!!!!!!!!

  • great footage

  • Man, after watching Beyond The Lighted Stage, and watching this show, it's really sad how John passed away. He was such a spirited, and energetic guy.

  • @roniszR - unfortunately John died of a heart attack brought on by diabetes complications. RIP John.

  • It's hard to see exactly how much of a part his diabetes played in him being fired.Geddy and Alex both have been on the record saying that their musical directions differed greatly from Rutseys.I was trying to say that percussion has developed so much since 1974, and that certainly can make one sound far better when applying them to ones trade.

  • Not knocking Rutsey here at all. He was a founding member and deserves his props. For godsakes, he was just a kid when he was ousted from the band and we never were able to see him develop as a drummer as percussion technology progressed .I have a recording of this song with Peart playing live and yes you can clearly tell the difference, but this song was written with Peart not involved, so it can obviously be seen as not nearly as complex as a Rush tune with Peart .

  • @katjill52301 the real reason that he couldn't develop was because he was suffering from diabetes and back then it was like you could do anything for it (like you can today.) peace.

  • OMG where did you get this!!!!

i love you now! you have completely made my life !

    :D
