The English definition and Japanese definition of Otaku is a bit different, but it all means one thing. Loving good anime, video games, manga and Japanese music! I am a proud Otaku, even if I don't go out to clubs with my friends and drink alcohol, I can still be happy.
If someone judges you and won't be your friend or, doesn't like you based on your interests. Well then that's just plain ignorant. Aren't all of us an otaku or fan of something in one way or another? If some girl is obessed with shopping, or some guy is obessed with sports, wouldn't it be in the same sense? We just happen to love something else. Anime. Is it wrong? No. People aren't used to having that logic thrown back at their faces. Don't be afraid to say what you love. Fuck everyone else.

I share my interests with others around me. Back when I was married, my wife and I watched some anime together, and I watched some soap operas with her -- that being her interest.

Like when they say "Kawaii!" or "Desu!" a lot, and they don't know what it means, or they use it in an English sentence (like "that is so kawaii"). It just kind of bugs me is all. :T

@RiskyCricket I absolutely hate it when people do that, as someone who is trying to learn the Japanese language, it bothers me when people say phrases wrong, or use mixed sentences like "That is so kawaii". Makes me want to reply with "おまえはばかですねえ?" which I saw translated to "You're an idiot, aren't you?". I have had no formal instruction with the language though, so I apologize if there are any grammatical errors.

Most okaku will go out frequently to work, go to concerts, eat, and of course pursue their hobbys. What's more, those otaku who have girl/boyfriends will share his/her interests, just as they want to share their interests with him/her....
A guys who was an otaku kidnapped and kept some poor girl in Japan a while back. I believe that's why otaku is like a derogatory term in Japan. In other countries it tends to be almost an endearing term. I think average Japanese people find the obsessive hobbies a bit creepy I suppose... OH WELL, more for US!

Otaku's are people who have to collect EVERYTHIN about the anime's they love, ranging from all box sets, all mangas, and even all figurines and possible eroges. It's because of this that otaku's are generally frowned upon in Japan.

To those who are fighting about otaku-ism in the comments-Otaku is a term used to describe anyone who's COMPLETELY OBSESSED with something, and has an encyclopedic knowledge of that one thing. It does not apply solely to Anime. One can be a squid or gun otaku, for example.

@DoctorEmz No, that's a Hikkikomori -- a person who has a fear of either the outside, or the general public, or both. Most okaku will go out frequently to work, go to concerts, eat, and of course pursue their hobbys. What's more, those otaku who have girl/boyfriends will share his/her interests, just as they want to share their interests with him/her....

A guys who was an otaku kidnapped and kept some poor girl in Japan a while back. I believe that's why otaku is like a derogatory term in Japan. In other countries it tends to be almost an endearing term. I think average Japanese people find the obsessive hobbies a bit creepy I suppose... OH WELL, more for US!

No. It's one thing to LIKE something with a passion. It's another thing to be so obsessed with it that it takes over and you have no "real life." Unacceptable. Not just with anime. Not too many people seem to understand why otaku is so looked down in Japan. I will try my best to convey why. Otaku are people who have an unhealthy obsession with their hobby, to the point or pass it where they ignore family and other responsibilities. If Americans were to have something of the same sort, it would be those people who holed themselves up and play MMO's like WOW or something as obsessively. This is the sad truth of Japan, please try to understand people don't like that label.

I wish people weren't so ¨hard¨ against Otaku's; Usually when you're an Otaku they stare at you like "WTF." and they never talk to you again or you burst out laughing cause' you both been hiding it. I wonder why people hate Otaku's. I can't see what's wrong with being different from everyone else: I'm an Otaku myself and I can watch Anime and listen to VOCALOID a whole day non-stop. Atleast we can be on a PC 12 hours without getting bored.

So yah all know...Just cuz you love anime doesn't make you an otaku, it just means you love anime.
Otaku's are people who have to collect EVERYTHIN about the anime's they love, ranging from all box sets, all mangas, and even all figurines and possible eroges. It's because of this that otaku's are generally frowned upon in Japan.
However, to Americans, most only know the word as someone who loves anime, but I felt the need to spread the truth about the word :P

To those who are fighting about otaku-ism in the comments-Otaku is a term used to describe anyone who's COMPLETELY OBSESSED with something, and has an encyclopedic knowledge of that one thing. It does not apply solely to Anime. One can be a squid or gun otaku, for example.

It's somehow like me. Yesterday I saw two friends saying "Look at that manga collection in there!", I wish I could be like that towards my friends, but i'm too afraid to tell them I'm an otaku. Even though they keep offending us, I keep my mask even though I want to slap them with a Miku-wig.

We can't really blame people for not understanding our hobbies as otakus. It's just that they think we're weirdos that like these 'stuff'. But considering how some of us are discriminated by these people, "Come on, we're still human. We also have feelings." I know a friend who's an otaku. She was made fun because of it. But because she wanted to draw anime and was pretty good at it, those who mocked her before, praised her afterwards.
