  • Oh... this brings back memories of Sunday mornings, trying to keep a congregation together. Always was one of my favourite hymns to play. Nice to hear it at a decent tempo, too... though I have a feeling I used to play just a shade faster. And, of course, let rip in the last verse and chorus. Hee hee... :D

    Thank you for sharing. :-)

  • @sehtdragon Hello and thank you very much. I was told off by one viewer some time ago in America for playing this far too fast for singing but when ever I heard this sung it is about this pace, maybe slightly slower in a large reverberant space.

If I do this again, it will sound a lot better as I now have the complete Salisbury organ which I am able to voice.

  • How refreshing to hear this beautiful hymn played so it doesn't sound like a funeral dirge. Even though it is frequently played at funerals, there is no need to drag it and slow it down. Excellent job!!!

  • @davewvu1 Hi, thanks for your comments. In the UK this pace seems to be quite normal, I have never heard it at a funeral but I suppose it would naturally be sung slower.

  • Thank you :-)

  • I really enjoy this. Very good articulation and registration.

  • @dakslater Thank you :-)

  • This is magnificent!! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!

  • @cazzie511 Thank you :-)

  • Love it!

Great performance - Great tempo - Great arrangement.

    Well done.

  • @laro1002 Thank you very much :-)

  • LOL .. I played this hymn this morning as our opening song in church today.

I have the C-C/Madeleine and the Oberwerk/Compenius II Organ Sample set for my Hauptwerk setup along with free download sample sets. Excellent performance! Good luck!

  • Lovely sound.

  • @sk8er1979 Yes, exactly and to keep it legato without missing out notes meant I had to borrow fingers from my other hand.

Listening to that again, I did make a few mistakes but I usually do when I am trying to play it without mistakes!

  • @sk8er1979 Thank you Nigel. Especially appreciated from someone who understands the art of alternative harmonies :-)

  • I sang this in High School Choir for competition, It still brings shivers to my spine. EXCELLENT!!!! Thank YOU!!!!!

  • @chuxterz Thanks. Glad you appreciated it.

  • Very good use of the limited sample - good tempo too - don't apologize for the lack of Pedal or extra manuals!

BTW: I don't have pedals either - that's because I m an organist who became paralyzed from a spinal tumor - I continue to play using hands only on the manuals + a Pedal to Great (or whatever manual has the accompaniment line). Temporarily I have only one M-Audio 61 Keystation manual but will eventually set up 3 manuals in a former Rodgers console with built-in speakers & amp.

  • @Rollinglenn Thanks for your comments. I am sad to hear that you can no longer play the pedals, there is much organ music that is impossible to play without them and I would find that very frustrating.

  • Great work Goodchappy! I thought that I commented a longtime ago, but I guess I didn't. I just love this version of my favourite hymn as it was well played. That Father Willis sounds rather good even without the pedalboard. Keep up the very good work and please give us more of your fine playing. Thanks!

  • Hey Peter could you tell me what stops you were using on the last verse? I really like the sound. Thanks Ty.

  • @AeolianSkinner1983 Hi Ty, there's a question! I'm not sure but it was probably...

GT= Double Open Diap 16, 2 ranks of Open Diap 8, Claribel Flute 8, Stopped Diap 8, Principal 4, Fifteenth 2, 4 rank mixture.

    SW= Gedackt 8, Open Diap 8,Vox Angelica 8, Viola Da Gamba 8, Octave 4, Super Octave 2, 3 rank mixture, Hautboy 8, Contra Fagotto 16, Trompette 8.

    SOLO = Hamonique Flute 8 and 4, Clarinet 8.

I had the octave and suboctave couplers on the swell and Solo because I had no pedals attached!

  • Very nice indeed. I have a Hauptwerk riding an Ahblorn 80-rank console, put them together and it's all you could ask for. The 3-manual Schantz which costs

only $100 is wonderful, but I like the Salisbury 'Father Willis" organ you're using

in this wonderful Vaughn Williams hymn. WONDERFUL registration .... and everything else.

  • @pw4489 Thank you very much for your comments.

I recently uploaded "O Valiant Hearts" which I think is better than "For all the Saints" as far as my performance.

Unfortunately, the current version of the Salisbury organ is not very configurable, I really hope this changes with the following versions.

  • Very convincing, nicely played and just the correct speed for singing to.

I have heard this played sometimes at a very depressing speed and I don't see the reason for it at all, it is a joyous hymn.

  • Excellent articulation. It was a pleasure to listen to, as always with your videos! Congratulations on a great performance!

  • @diapason93 Thank you very much :-)

  • You had mentioned you didn't have a pedal board. Are you using Hauptwerk's bass coupler for this recording?

  • @bishfan Hi, no I was not using Hauptwerk's base coupler, in fact the function doesn't exist in the Salisbury Cathedral sample set but the 16ft stop on the Great seems to give a good balance of Bass without being too muddy.

  • This is a fine performance; tempo just right, with a good variety of articulation through the verses. It would be interesting to compare this with a performance on the actual Salisbury Cathedral organ, but I must say that Ralph Vaughan Williams shines again. I'm certain he would be happy to hear you..

  • @jmcgatkinson Hi and thanks for your comments. I would also like to compare this to the real Salisbury organ.

At the moment the Hauptwerk sample set is only about a 3rd of the full organ, about 30 stops so a nice size but has its limits.

I eagerly await the full release of this organ and hope the makers do it justice.

  • I must say that I like your version of this as well. I have my own up on YouTube and on the same sample set, but I play by ear and my playing is nowhere near as good as this.

I would love to see your setup. I recently sold the Allen that I played through and am expecting the parts to put together a 4 manual set up soon.

    Keep up the good work.

  • @ShandyHall Hi, thanks for your comments. I play a lot by ear and was actually playing this by ear. I tend to play by ear even if I have the music in front, depends what it is, often the music is there as a rough guide, sometimes I am glued to it as if my life depends on it.

At the moment all I have is a Yamaha keyboard and 2 22" touch screens either side mounted vertically.

I have run out of money and room for a proper set up.. SO if anyone wants to give me some money I will gladly receive :-)

  • I love this hymn and I have this same sample. Luckily though, I have 3 manuals to play on, although you still play much better, LOL! Like you, can't wait til Vols. 2 and 3 come out. Hope you post more!

  • @mikedc2020 Hi, thanks for your comments and for favouriting my performance.

I am a little frustrated that I don't have the room or the money to get a proper setup, my feet are starting to get lonely! Sad thing is, 15 years ago, I did have a 3 manual console with pedals but had to sell it due to moving house.

  • You might adapt your tempo to something a bit broader if people were singing it...I do like your tempo as an organ solo. Lovely!

  • @VisitStPeters I have already had quite a few private messages saying this is the perfect tempo for singing.

I may do another recording that is slower especially for you :-)

  • @VisitStPeters Search for "for all the saints rscm" for a choral performance of this hymn.

  • @VisitStPeters I always hate when music is played too "Diane Bish" fast. That is definitely NOT the case here and if you sing along, you'll agree.

  • Another fabulous video "goodchappy!!" I'm amazed you manage to get the pedal bass when you don't have a pedal board. You are a magican!! Also a very good musican!! Have you ever played the actual Salisbury Organ in the cathedral?? Thanks for sharing your talent and keep them coming!!

    Best Regards,

    Roy

  • @organnut Thanks sir. I have never played the real Salisbury organ but I have played a similar one in St. Albans Cathedral years ago, though that was before I was an organist.

  • A lovely rich mellow sound from this fine organ.

  • @silverstartrucker I hope you didn't get in trouble with Gladys upstairs :-)
