  • AWESOME! Amazing and Beautiful sounds from Eric and Derek. I was lucky enough to see the Eric with Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall tour in 2007 not once, but twice. Man, that was a treat, so many times the chemistry was like the Layla album all over again. The best sounds out of Gibson and Fender that I can recall!

    Thank you for the post!

  • Ain't life sweet? With musicians such as EC, Derek, and all that are still with us, and all who have gone before. Our lives have been enriched beyond our wildest dreams.

  • Eric Clapton is an excellent slide player-very clean and hits the right note everytime.

  • Amazing!! My two favorite guitar players playing together!!

  • clapton does play slide very well, but only acoustic and resonator. running on faith on the unplugged ablum is a good example of his slide playing

  • @tom27j - Actually EC plays electric slide too. That's him playing slide at the end of the "first part" of Layla, just before the long piano and slide (feat. D. Allman) part.

  • nah Derek Trucks is just better.

  • @theatlantisrise that is the worst analogy i have ever read in my life

  • Wow it's a little sad that I didn't know derek trucks sometimes played without a slide.

  • cool

  • Yep that an SG Derek is playing ...

  • I saw Carlos Santana get Eric to raise his hands and leave the stage in St Louis MO at the fox theater circa 1975. I saw Derek play at the gorge in WA state last May with Warren Haynes, Greg Allman et all, right before Warren played with the dead, and after the doobie brothers. All good, all different. Derek rocks! Eric okay!

  • Once you get to guitarists like this, you stop comparing. Once you attain that benchmark of skill you should stop being compared to people. My personal opinion.

  • @thatgibsonguy0001 thats exactly right! there are no pissing contests at the top.

  • dont compare gods.the world will be destroyed!!

  • Well, excuse me--I played the video again, and Derek isn't using the slide until close to the end--so the difference in tone is because Derek is probably playing a Silvertone & Eric a Strat, and I love the combined sound!!

  • Comparing a slide versus plucked guitar sound is like comparing apples and oranges--both are great but different! Plus, Derek and Eric are playing different brands of guitars--which adds to their distinctive sounds! And don't knock Eric--listen to how skillfully he echoes Derek in their incredible duet! Their blended sound is incredible! Also--they're both bending notes--Derek using the slide and Eric with how he manipulates the strings on the fret with his left hand. BOTH are master axmen!!

  • Clapton needs some tone in that Strat. Derek is playing hot on that SG and has tone out the ass! Clapton seems to be playing straight with no tone. Far as guitar players go, Warren Hayes is better than Clapton. He and Derek together is pure joy to listen to. I hear players as good or better than Clapton frequently, but better than Trucks? Not yet I haven't. If I do, I'll let you know.

  • Hey please watch my band if you're bored! I think my singing needs the most work. Our best song is "speak my heart". Any comments would be appreciated! Thank you

  • Here's hoping for the 2010 Crossroads show, they're able to release every song played that day on blu-ray.

  • @marcyboy07 You better get your facts straight. Clapton is an excellent slide player. He solo albums from the 1970s contained a lot of slide blues material where he was playing slide himself. Look up some footage of the Clapton, Bramhall & Trucks trio from Clapton and his band world tour 2006. 461 Ocean Boulevard and No Reason to Cry are some examples.

  • Clapton plays better than Trucks....no wait, Trucks plays better than Clapton....I think Clapton plays faster than Trucks....then again I think Trucks plays sweeter than Clapton....Clapton has more hits than Trucks....Trucks has more energy than Clapton....but Clapton is Clapton and Trucks is Trucks....do you see where I'm going with this, kiddies? All you amateurs need to stop comparing guitarists like a bunch of high school morons....shut the fuck up and listen to the music, your opinion sux.

  • @pscotmo expressed so well. you're right. you're so right.

  • I'm sure Trucks isn't out there thinkin "i gotta top clapton tonite" and vice versa...they're just havin a good time!!! Just enjoy 2 badass guitarists playing some damn good music...because Lord knows there isn't much out there even worth listening to nowadays

  • @atty1chgo It would be better for you to remain silent, and be thought of as a fool, than to speak, and remove any doubt

  • Well then go and find Derek and pull his pants down and do your business. Because it's not about truth and reality about music and talent with you, but hero worship, or something else which isn't clear. Derek Trucks, although very talented, isn't as talented as Eric Clapton, and never will be. End of story.

  • @atty1chgo wait arent you doing the same thing by defending your "hero"? o and derek trucks was better than clapton at age 13 clapton is THE most overrated player ever

  • -There are a ton of guys out there who can play a gazillion notes a second, but not so many with a truly unique voice on the instrument- Derek's just such a guy..

  • I don't care I was responding to someone else. But he never will be as good.

  • @atty1chgo And you opinion will never be as good as mine......Thats just my opinion

  • Derek Trucks WILL NEVER be as great as Eric Clapton on guitar.

  • Who the hell cares.

  • @jsl209 I agree. Cant we all just say that they are both supremely talented at what they do. Clapton may be as perfect a lead player as is possible. And at least in my opinion Trucks is as good or better than anyone else I have ever heard on slide. Lets just enjoy the fact that they are friends and will play shows together. Besides, as Townshend said to Clapton of Jimi Hendrix. "This guys gonna put us out of business"

  • @atty1chgo There is no way to know that. I agree that Clapton is better, but the gap is not as large as you seem to think. Trucks is still under 30, and unlike athletes, guitarists get better with age. In 50 years we will know if you are right

  • Hah Clapton sucks balls! Trucks is good though.

  • whats the name of this song?

  • "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad" from the Derek & the Dominoes album "Layla and other Assorted Love Songs." Written by Clapton and Bobby Whitlock.

  • A real treat! Eric gave lessons (and guitars) to Derek when Derek was a wee tot. Derek has turned out to be one of our most gifted players of today. So versatile, so melodic, and so humble. What a treasure. See him whenever possible. And, by the way, Eric can play slide, he just doesn't very often. I've seen him do it occasionally, and he can manage, its just not his thing. He likes pluckin'.

  • "isnt' a slide player"? you should see the "Sessions for Robert Johnson".. he rocks the slide up!

  • I normally wouldn't say stuff on these things, but marcyboy said that Duane Allman didn't play at Crossroads 2004. That was really funny. I'm sorry to tell you this Marcyboy, but Duane Allman has been dead for a LONG time. Life's a bitch. I miss him too

  • Hey Doyle - Great rhythm guitar. Loved you in "Texas"! (band) Santa Rosa, Ca. You were just a lad.

  • Just uploaded a new clip from Luther & NMA .. check the vid responses

  • OK but i like mine faw MOOORE

  • Lowell George and Ed King. Allen said to Gary"you are not slide player at all, im agree.

  • I'm sorry but sacred steelers smoke almost everyone on that list. with Mr. Trucks being the exception. Check out Aubrey Ghent. or even better his son AJ ghent. thats some slide.

  • My Ten Favorite SLIDE Players: (Not in order) 1. Gary Rossington-Skynyrd 2. Steve Gaines- Skynyrd 3. Duane Allman- Allman Bros, Derek & the Dominos 4. Warren Haynes- Allman Bros, Gov't Mule 5. • love Luther

  • maybe you don't know about the king of them all DAVE HOLE!

  • You all missed Rory Gallagher! "Souped up Ford" is a good one to start with...and don't forget Bonnie Raitt...she really can play!

  • I just got "Walk on Hot Coals" by Rory on a whim. You nailed it. This guy is the tits

  • eric clapton isnt a slide player he a normal but ultra talented player

  • Layla doesnt have slide guitar ?? tell that to Duane Allman who played slide on Layla. This conversation is over as I can see you are a clueless twit

  • Duane plays slide on the original track,I know Eric isnt a slide player I just said that to see if you knew a little of what your saying ,but you dont so quit buggin` me

  • well u put me to the test wich was saying tht clapton was a slide guitarist wich he is not and as i stated there was no slide in Crossroads 04 version of layla i didnt state n e fink about the original did i?

  • yea but it is Derek Trucks who is a slide player and i am sure clapton can play slide.. he is fuckin clapton

  • haha listen to layla?!?! Duane Allman plays slide on that

  • Love this chord progression and love the way Derek Trucks solos over it. So tuneful.

  • if all these whiners would even get a clue ..originality comes from reference and homage..good music will always be special.influence someone and quit bitchen and analizing u turds.

  • I suppose you can play better...

  • Derek's soloing from 1:08 onwards is so much fun, sunny days on the beach...

  • wow!! clapton and derek play great together!!

  • Freebird was a tribute to Duane Allman!

  • Why does such an outrageously high % of YouTube insist on making every musical excerpt a poll for superiority?

  • It's a generation thing. What else do you expect from people that have "musical" (and I use that term VERY loosely) idols that have an ego the size of Jupiter.

Like you said it's superiority...most people just make comments like that to get attention (albeit negative but attention none the less)

  • @aaron1433 Justin Beiber plays the best blues guitar of all time. LOLOL

  • What song is this?

  • why does love got to be so sad

off the derek and the dominos Layla album, original had duane allman on it, duane tears it up that whole album

  • clapton takes him apart

  • if you actually went to any of these shows you'd know that trucks blew him out of the water every night, granted erics aging but derek trucks is something special

  • nah i disagree man steam train is right Clapton still has something that trucks doesn't have

  • Different styles ppl .... I was at this show and did walk away blown away by Derek. He stood out in THAT show, with all the greats there that day. I had seen EC several times before and he was awesome as well, but this show, this assembly of talent, this show ...... show of a lifetime for me.

  • I saw that tour in Orlando..was incredible..I'll never forget it

  • how is clapton a racist pig?

  • did you ALL miss the point that there is some great guitar playing right here? Simply beautiful.

  • hope you are proud of yourself. you're a sad sad person

  • Nothing good to say at all huh ?

  • your grammar skills amaze me

  • 3/5 members of claptons backing band are black you stupid fuck. one of claptons best friends was Jimi hendrix. his idol is robert johnson. do you understand that youre an idiot yet?

  • most of the band is black....... jimi hendrix was one of his best friends.... he plays and is influenced by blues music wich was created by BLACKS ... so before u say hes a racist think...

  • my list in no order.

1.Hendrix,SRV,Stills,Roy Buchanan,Les Paul,Gilmour,Clapton,Chuck Berry,Bo Diddley,Duane Allman,Dickey Betts, etc etc. no number one fav. No Need all have that special touch, sweet music to the ears.

  • dont forget jeff beck and the man he inspired-

    Eric johnson

  • Good ears.

  • Paco De Lucia should be in the list of the ten best guitarists of all times ; Shawn Lane too.

  • keithstrat!!!!.im totally agreed with u!!!!!

  • Musicians, opinions will likely differ. Musicians listen for different things than would the average listener but music is about the "average listener",the majority... We all have or favorites but if you look at the statistics it will identify the best if you choose to make it a competition but music is not a competition...!

    Musicians

  • Music is in the ear of each individual listener! People have different taste, what makes one musician or guitar player rise above another is majority opinion. If a majority agrees that one guitar player is better than another then he is, it is as simple as that. If one guy has the most sales or concert attendance and so on then he appeals to the vast majority and therefore is the best even though you or I may disagree.

  • no particular order SRV Rory Gallagher Ritchie Blackmore Jimmy Page Paco de Lucia BB King Freddie King Eric Johnson Johnny Winter Randy Rhoads
  • randy rhoads? jimmy page? chumps... where's the allen collins or steve gaines? or alvin lee?

  • alvin lees incredible

  • what about Duane Allman who pushed Clapton farther the he has ever been pushed and inspired trucks like none other

  • nonono... fuck YOU!

  • jimmy page is one of the greatest guitarists of all time, who pioneered different studio recording methods, invented several techniques, wrote some of the greatest rock of all time, influenced countless people to pick up the guitar, and wrote possibly THE most hauntingly beautiful song of all time...stairway to heaven. youre pretty much a stupid fuck. kill yourself.

  • Jimmy Page is a god, and to even question that means you simply have no fucking idea about what playing guitar actually means.

  • Spirit wrote Taurus which is basically exactly Stairway to Heaven and Page took it. But you are correct Page is a great guitarist, he just shouldn't get credit for Stairway

  • The chord progression to Stairway To Heaven is a very common progression. Page just wrote a very good tune around it!

  • When you listen to the two songs side by side...the only similarities are in the beginning and even then, although it is very close, its still not note for note.

  • the only similiar in those songs is the begging and there not even that close

  • These are not in order of my liking, just a list. I believe that these guitarists are some of the finest ever. Not all legendary players, but an integral part of the whole ball o' wax. 1. Roy Buchanan (expression) 2. David Gilmour 3. Amos Garrett (best solo - "Midnight at the Oasis") 4. Tim Renwick (melodic) 5. George Harrison (most humble, best electric slide player ever) 6. Jimi Hendrix 7. Chet Atkins (elegant) 8. Jimmy Bryant 9. Don Felder (underrated) 10. Les Paul
  • if you think george harrison is the best slide player you should listen to sonny landreth. he gets a lot more sounds out than typical slide guitar (btw I'm not implying george harrison is "typical" slide guitar)

  • i dunno, steve gaines from skynyrd played a mean slide guitar

  • Dude.. Gary played all the slide in Skynyrd.. and was amazing.. Glad to know someone finally respecting Gary ROssington.. well.. Atleast u knew skynyrd.

  • actually, gary only played slide on about 3 tracks, freebird included. gaines was the predominant slide player (which can be heard on the 76 knebworth live version of "t for texas")

  • ill put Mark Knopfler on that list boys and girls

  • DErek& Warren Haynes!!!!!!!

  • my top 10 1)clapton 2)srv 3)duane allman 4)randy rhoads 5)jimmy paige 6)slash 7)Kirk hammett 8)jimi hendrix 9)john frucainte 10)bb king
  • Hard to argue with anyone on that list. Not in the same order I would put them, but much the same people.

  • Ok this is my top 10 list based on innovation soul blues style technique feel and creativity 1) Duane Allman 2) Clapton 3) Hendrix 4) BB King 5) SRV 6) Chuck Berry 7) Trucks 8) Page 9) Jerry Garcia 10) Ry Cooder
  • 11) Slash

    12) Ritchie Blackmore

    13) Tommy Bolin

    14) Aerial Bender

    15) The Edge

    16) Keith Richards

    17) Peter Townsend

    18) Joe Perry

    19) Mick Ronson

    20) Johnny Winter

  • TOP 10 R&R GUITARISTS OF ALL-TIME: (this list is based on style, feel, emotion, uniqueness, creativity, technique, adaptability, diversity, etc...) 1) Duane Allman 2) Jimi Hendrix 3) Carlos Santana 4) Jimmy Page 5) Jeff Beck 6) Eric Clapton 7) Robin Trower 8) Johnny Thunders 9) Leslie West 10) Dickey Betts
  • Nice choice...Leslie West...a forgotten player with one of the best sounds/vibrato ever. Check my list...it's a bit eclectic.

  • i saw trucks with carrot top.. great show

  • tedleo, eric was rippin it up before derek trucks was even born you fuckin idiot!

  • When Clapton asked Derek to play with him he was thinkin it was only gonna be a couple shows but it wound up turning into a whole Tour which these 2 together were amazing so much soul in this song its incredable how good it is Clapton always played good with Trucks and Duane no matter what song it was they could play the phone book on a guitar and it would still sound amazing lol

  • Derek is obviously the better guitarist

  • This was one of the magical moments of a magical day. It was the first time I heard Derek Trucks. Amazing. One of the best.

  • What is the name of this SONG?

  • The song's called "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad?" from the Layla album. One of Clapton's best in my opinion and having Duane Allman in the original and Derek Trucks by his side in this video is another beautiful rendition.

  • yeah i saw santana with derek trucks and it was amazing

  • so did I. they kicked ass

  • do you think eric is reminissing about duane listening to derek?I WOULD THINK. beautiful!

  • Totally awesome for what it was. I need to watch part two of my Crossroads DVD and quit fishing so much.

    Is it time for Wanee?

  • i got to see eric clapton live once. that man is in incredible guitar player

  • Saw Derek twice in very small venues up here in NYS and Conn. Like small movie theaters and he and his group filled the place with amazing music. He's incredible.

Just Eric with Steve Winwood at MSG in NYC.....two living legends! Unbelieveable!

  • That screen is bigger than all bajesus. lol.

  • I love this song.

Derek Trucks touches are so beautiful. I saw him with Eric at the Royal Albert Hall. Words can't describe hearing him live. Especially the solo on 'I Am Yours'

  • two souls high up in the clouds. and with a doudt there guitar in hand .playing like there is no end ;) ookeee bybyyy peace8lovemoi:D

  • man those people were so lucky to have seen that in real life ...wow! is right

  • WOW,WOW,WOW,WOW,WOW,WOW,WOW,WOW,WOW,WOW,

still alive and Derek, go for it.

  • why do you have to post garbage like that below? Get a life.

  • This is WHY DOES LOVE GOT TO BE SO SAD. there are much better quality versions on youtube. sick performance!

  • Ahhh, did I just see a age barrier broken?

  • I don't doubt we will see a Derek and The Dominoes tour in the future featuring D.T. on slide?

  • i doubt it.

one of them died, one them went crazy, and i think the other guy and clapton got in a fight.

  • If anybody has this DVD can you tell me if it is a good buy. Does it have good sound quality, picture, songs, etc. Please and thanks.

  • i just got it ripped from my boss - who runs a guitar shop and is a sound lover. so am i. i will buy it on thursday, cause the sound is just perfect. i will teach on wednesday and give the rip away to my guitar student, who is 17 and needs to learn and discover. the dvd is worth the expense, trust me or blame me... just my opinion

  • I don't like Derek's SG on this. I'm not a Gibson guy. Great video.

  • its"why does love got to be so sad" it was on Derek and the Dominos Layla album. the original version has two of the best ever, Clapton and Duane Allman playing together.

  • can anyone tell me the name and artist of this song pleeeeease??

this needs to be on my ipod!

  • layla-eric clapton

  • uh...no. it's eric clapton (derek and the dominoes) and the song is "why does love got to be so sad?" Not "Layla" but that's also a ood one.

  • have you checked out that tibetan guy, playing a cool version of hendrix' little wing, sitting at a lake in tibet? it's really great! just look for hendrix tibet.

  • Why do you have to spam this on like every good guitar video that has nothing to do with what your are saying?

  • Are you sure this is the crossroads festival? Because this looks like the backdrop to the tour Clapton took Trucks and Doyle Brimhall II on last winter, he could use the same background for the Crossroads festival but this is exactly what he used in the winter. I think Steve Jordan was on drums for the winter tour too.

  • Yeah...this is CrossRoads 2007,from Chicago.

  • you're right, i just watched it on PBS. Awesome show.

  • i love the comment poopoo! love it!!

    derek trucks is grate!

  • your the kind of tool that doesnt know his music history, has a shite record collection, lives alone and according to a bridge i drove under today gonks aswell? your turn!

  • pay respect to the music. quit pluggin your artwork

  • Fantastic!!-Derek's intonation and musical taste set him apart-and he is particularly impressive playing without the slide-also...a great song, thanks for that Eric..and for inviting Derek into the band

  • Poops has quite the ego...and is deaf to boot..BUT possibly the worlds greatest quitarist..

  • Great great clip Duane would be smiling away

  • Yeah,wouldn`t he? I am..

    LJH

  • Please no more crappy cell phone posts!

  • they didnt spray clapton is god on the brick walls of our great planet for nothing u fcking tools!

  • Yes its called grafiti... Grafiti is radom shit junkies spray on walls... So because some junkie sparayed Clapton is God on a wall doesnt make him great... Does it.

  • well ive just sprayed bencantona is a gonk! on a bridge that crosses the main motorway south, from scotland to england,a good few thousand people will see that and agree everyday! but hey its random shit right?

  • You'd be the kinda retard that sprays shit on walls coz they got nothing better in life to do then ...

  • I don't think I'll ever get over how amazing EC and Trucks play the guitar. It's so easy to them. They make it look absolutely effortless.. Phenomenal..

  • Isn't Eric throwing in a bit of soul and Jazz here? Great stuff. Goes to show Eric still has hit, people like Mayer would openly admit the influence Eric has had on them, and how brilliant he really is.

  • Is Derek playing an "SG/Les paul Standard" ? He's great ! EC nowadays = not my cup of tea, the young EC was amazing and OK, now he's an old monkey doing his

trick(s). I go for "Trucks" !! A US-friend attended me on Derek, also together with his Susan it's more than OK.

  • I love this song :)

  • clapton bores you? Don't get me wrong i love your music like SRV but listen stevie plays the riffs over and over again, I don't want to fight, clapton and SRV are great, I just dissagree with your comment

  • Clapton always bores the fuck out of me.
