I saw one the other day at my local knife store, and it was the original frame locking 1660, but with a G-10 inlay in he handle scale, I've NEVER seen one like that before.
Is there a way to keep the torsion bar from going bad? Becuase not everyday i use my scallion and im afriad its going crap out. But i requested extra pieces so i can fix my kmifes easily and fast
the blade on those knives are pretty week. i bought a leek for my brother last christmas and he broke about half an inch off the tip with in the first month he had it, kinda disapointing
Wouldn't it be better to have the tip be sandvic steel, than have the rest of the cutting edge in d2? That way your tip would be less suseptible to breaking.
@MisterMinnesota yes I woudl agree with that I guess the designers either like the look of this and thought it woudl be cheaper to do it this way OR just dint think of that, lol...
@MisterMinnesota The D2 steel is much tougher than the Sandvik steel used in the rest of the blade, the sandvik steel in the leeks SUCK for breaking. I sell knives at a sporting goods store and the most common comment I hear on the leek is that the tip broke off. D2 is harder but also tougher all-around than the sandvik, it's a tool steel which is very close to a carbon steel.
@sylram8 Get whichever one suits your fancy! Both the Tenacious and the Leek could be used to represent each company quite well. I would buy the Leek in a heartbeat, though the Tenacious is a great knife too. Get both or whichever one seems more of 'you'.
D2 actually isn't THAT fragile. It's incredibly incredibly strong and amazingly durable. Maybe kinda down on toughness though. (yes, there is a difference between the three, people) D2 is a great steel, a great user steel, just hard to work with, especially sharpening. D2 generally works best at about a 25 degree angle. Baton with it, chop with it, it can take it. Trust me. My RAT 7 in D2 is my most heavily used fixed blade.
I had a D2 grip chip out on my using it to cut some wood...nothgin extreme, so I had a bias when I made the video, since then I used a few more bl;ades in D2 and had no problems..
Ah, yeah, I watched it. That should have stood up to that. D2 can do some work. Probably improper heat treating. We're you really thrashing the blade or were you just doing a simple task like Nutnfancy was doing with his CSKII? It chipped out stripping really really small branches, granted it was cold, that knife should have stood up to that; it was 1095, not quite D2 but just a recall.
I wasnt batoning or anythgin, I was debarking a branch to make a steak, just messin around...it hit a knot in the branch and chipped out, a small chip but at the time I was like wtf thats brittle...
Yeah that isn't too hot. D2 is still being perfected so it probably has gotten better. I batoned HARD through some pretty frozen wood using the RAT 7. If you can get the change, I would try it out. I saw some on ebay from like $89, legit products. Not too bad.
This knife is a great "light duty" edc IMO. Not that it's not strong enough to handle harder tasks, but the lack of belly and traction on the handle lend it more to "suit and tie" affairs, office use, as well as opening packages, etc. The shallot and random leek would be good alternatives if you want something bigger, or the same size, and the scallion if you want something smaller. If you don't do a lot of "roll cuts" against a hard surface, this knife should be fine.
I have the Junkyard Dog 2 CB and that is one cool knife I am selling it but not for some time and I am selling it to someone I stay in contact with so it will not be gone for ever.
yours is my favorite leek, but i didn't buy one because of the wharnecliffe(sp?) style blade, i feel that i would be using the tip only(most of the time) and i didn't feel like spending $50-$70 for 1/3 of a knife, but if it was a diff. blade style then maybe i'd buy it. and i agree with nutnfancy on the scallion, the clip is too awkward and that is the reason i don't want one of them, it's a shame that little things have such a big impact on my opinion =[
hey man i like love all of ur vids but can u please please please make a vid on the kershaw scallion please i just got it and I thought u already had a vid on it but u dont so please please please please make a vid on it thank u so very much
im planning on buying a kershaw knife but with should i chose? the leek or the shallot. I first saw the leek that I really like but i heart that its tip is brittle thats why Im thinking about buying the shallot instead. Im not planning the use the knife for heavy tasks but for EDC . witch one should i chose?
well, the tip will only break if your not using it properly, i have a leek, and i am very happy with it, the tip has not broken because i have not used it for prying anything. so go for leek, the shalot is often to small for most people hands, and the spring is not as strong
What kind of utility purposes is this knife made for? Or is it just a collecters item, like you said it is not the perfect EDC. But I would not expect crap or just collecter's stuff out of Kershaw.
this one takes a torsion bar, I have a video on it, thats this assisted mechainism, yes it wears over tiem, but I heard from a few peopel who used theres that it was striong for up to a yar of contatant use before it started gettign a bit slower...but the peice cna be easily repalced if it did so...
I actually own these knives and they are my favorite for everyday use, I live on a farm and have traveled the country with my Leeks, finding it useful for everything from cutting twine to slicing through meat and hide to personal defense. The only thing it isn't any good for is prying, hammering and as a screwdriver. lol. My favorite is the Leek w/ a serrated edge. A small knife with a big price tag that is worth every penny.
I feel honored to hear that, I ahve a GREAT respect6 for nutnfancy and am freinds with both him and duane...but I have not yet seen ryanjcs's vids Ill have to look him up...
CPM - no matter what the accronyme means - stands for a steel that is made from high grade powder metall (which are extremely pure) in a sintering process.
The resulting steel is more homogeneous than a melted steel specimen. So you have almost same material quality over the whole blade in microscope scale.
D2 is like M2 or S30V/S90V a modern tool steel combining hardness and toughness. It is mainly used in the industry for high speed steel cutting tools or industrial cutting in the automation branch.
This was done back in the days by folding damast but modern tool steels (e.g. from crucible) are much better in any aspect. So damast is history now (but nicer blades I admit and handmade)
You can take a slice off a hammer with those blades without loosing much sharpness or chipping the blade. NO GUARANTY IT YOU TRY. I did it with my Spyderco Military S30V and it happend. Maybe I post avid on that.
I had thought that CPM stood for Compressed Powder Metal, but I found that it's actually Crucible Particle Metallurgy.
I wanted to ask, though, if you had found one of the 1660DAM Leeks, with the Damascus blade. Is Damascus any better than this blade? I've got this one, but was interested in the DAM because Kershaw doesn't advertise it on their site.
The damscus versions alos very nice and cna be found in alot of diffwerent online shops but I have not gotten one so I can't speak about it eprsonally...this woudl be a good question for the forums...to owners of both versions...
The Leek is a great knife. I have given mine absolute hell and it's still holding up like the day I bought it (Model 1660BB). The only sign wear and tear are a few tiny scuffs on the finish and I've sharpened it once. It was a great EDC for me, but I've recently moved to a Ti Lite 4, Kershaw Blackout (a fantastic affordable EDC, doesn't have much heart to it though), or Kershaw Baby Boa depending on the day. The Baby Boa is a little pricey though; I'm scratching my head to this day as to why.
sure, lol, I agree on the comment leavbing, haha I always try to use the reply button so you know who I am talking to or what comment I am commenting back to...
my freins son is in boyscouts and is looking for a betetr knife but on the cheaper side aswell by ure experience(it has to fit in his hand and his hand is roughly 7")what is a good knife for him(also hes is 11)
hmmm as for a cheap fixed blade a Mora knife (forsts mora of sweden) average price is $10 and they are nice for the money! for a folder...hmmm, well there are ALOT of chpices out there, please send me a message with more info like price range and if he might want one from a specific brand...then I cna help you further...
Ok lets see...check out the Benchmade Pika II...I have a reviw on it...if he is lookign for a bigger knife that he can maybe use for camp tasks, look at the cold steel pocket bushman, I also have a review on it...
this has been discussed on the forums...it was a cheap OTF, that's all...only 2 good knives were a Microtech Ultartech and a Microtech Toodon in the dark knight
you think the Joker uses a Trooden? or was it another character? the one he uses in the clip I saw looked much more like a OTF made by paragon, you cna find a video on it over at videoknife dot (com) but its not a cheap OTF, but YES there are many cheapo clones of it called the cupid...
I sold them with the rest of ym knives years ago to raise money for a car, I had sold ym whole collection 3 tiems since I have been inot knives, lol...then keep gettign back into collecting again...I will love knives till the end of my life, lol...
yes sir, there is A troodon in the film..i didn't say it was the cheapo that you see in the commercials...in one part of the film he slices a black guy and he is holding a purple handled troodon, and there's Microtech Ultratech when they capture the joker and are taking out everything out of his pockets...like i said, it's been confirmed on the forums...that's what i had originally thought, and was right...oh, and it is DEFINETLY a cheapo..again, the forums :)
No I did not see the movie, but yeah I saw a clip here on youtiube with the knife, it appears to be a paragon desing, an OTF go to videoknife dot (com) and watch the vidoes on the OTF's its over there, there are plenty of copies of the knife thats cheaper called the cupid OTF...
good vid, and I really like your banner above your name good job. I have a question, have you heard of a company called Sheffield? I bought a knife and its called the Sheffield Superior. please comment me as soon as you can about the company, thanks alot. take care.
I am not sure if tere is a componay called sheffield or nmot but sheffield is a place in england, many knives are made in there so they are marked sheffield england or sometiems just sheffield, so its common to see that mostly on older knives, but it coudl be possible its alos a compnay name...
CPM is Crucible Particle Metallurgy BTW. And what is it about Kershaw knifes and the onion family of vegatables? Leek, Chive, Scallion? I'm not just a knife nerd but a plant nerd as well. lol.
lol yeah, his last anme is onion so he plays off of that for his knife anmes...they are all in the onion famioly both in the vegitable world as well as the knife world, lol a play on words I guess...its just creative...but eventually he will run out, he also used the shallot, another oen of his designs, lol...
I bought a scallion 1620FL at a gun show a couple of weeks ago. i love it ... seems to be a good knife. keep 'em coming cutlerylover, u have great vids
all knives new easily cuts paper it doesnt really show much so I stopped, however I wil have a cuttign demo in the fgutr with multiple knives cuttign all different kidns of stuff...
all coated knives still have the edge exposed metal for sharpenign but in the case you wan tto change your edge angle you could always sharpen off the coating in that area before you start sharpening the meatl itself, no a big deal...
lol it goes off every 15 minutes and I dotn bother to check what tiem it is before I start shooting/filming...Yes I prefer S30V for higher end knives and for cheaper knives I like 154cm or ATS34, but I own and use all kidns of steels...
Personally, I think, D2 is a very nice knife steel as well. S30V seems to hold an edge very long (at least for me - I EDC the Benchmade 6150 and it's got a S30V steel blade).
I would love to see CPM S110V in a knife.
Whatever... 154CM and CPM 154 are also very good knife steels. I would also recommend them for EDC folder and fixed.
I agree I have only owned one knife in S90V and it was really nice! but as you get harder and harder steels you get the down side of having them chip on hard materials like plastic zip ties and so forth...
I would like to see u review a coldsteel Spartan

this has been discussed on the forums...it was a cheap OTF, that's all...only 2 good knives were a Microtech Ultartech and a Microtech Toodon in the dark knight
nate3993 3 years ago
you think the Joker uses a Trooden? or was it another character? the one he uses in the clip I saw looked much more like a OTF made by paragon, you cna find a video on it over at videoknife dot (com) but its not a cheap OTF, but YES there are many cheapo clones of it called the cupid...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
i have the joker's otf replica

oh well wat happend to them..u sell em or something? lol
ilovejkl13 3 years ago
I sold them with the rest of ym knives years ago to raise money for a car, I had sold ym whole collection 3 tiems since I have been inot knives, lol...then keep gettign back into collecting again...I will love knives till the end of my life, lol...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
yes sir, there is A troodon in the film..i didn't say it was the cheapo that you see in the commercials...in one part of the film he slices a black guy and he is holding a purple handled troodon, and there's Microtech Ultratech when they capture the joker and are taking out everything out of his pockets...like i said, it's been confirmed on the forums...that's what i had originally thought, and was right...oh, and it is DEFINETLY a cheapo..again, the forums :)

cutlerylover 3 years ago
No I did not see the movie, but yeah I saw a clip here on youtiube with the knife, it appears to be a paragon desing, an OTF go to videoknife dot (com) and watch the vidoes on the OTF's its over there, there are plenty of copies of the knife thats cheaper called the cupid OTF...

astinos23 3 years ago
I am not sure if tere is a componay called sheffield or nmot but sheffield is a place in england, many knives are made in there so they are marked sheffield england or sometiems just sheffield, so its common to see that mostly on older knives, but it coudl be possible its alos a compnay name...

CPM is Crucible Particle Metallurgy BTW. And what is it about Kershaw knifes and the onion family of vegatables? Leek, Chive, Scallion? I'm not just a knife nerd but a plant nerd as well. lol.
dsmith308 3 years ago
Ken Onion is the designer of some of the kershaw knives, particularly the speed safe design.
mn9500 3 years ago
lol yeah, his last anme is onion so he plays off of that for his knife anmes...they are all in the onion famioly both in the vegitable world as well as the knife world, lol a play on words I guess...its just creative...but eventually he will run out, he also used the shallot, another oen of his designs, lol...

u said new knives cut easily so if they get dulled after using. u can still sharpen them right?
and subscribed!
chanmenh 3 years ago
Did it say disposable on the box it came in?
xtheshame 3 years ago
yes of course, all knives can and will need to be resharpened at some point with use...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
what about the black coated knives? can u sharpen that black part too?
sorry to bother u again and thanks
chanmenh 3 years ago
all coated knives still have the edge exposed metal for sharpenign but in the case you wan tto change your edge angle you could always sharpen off the coating in that area before you start sharpening the meatl itself, no a big deal...

Thanks for the review onces more!
Do you have a favourite steel for a knife?
(does your clock jingle every 5 minutes or are you just timing your recordings? :-)
pingpongme 3 years ago
lol it goes off every 15 minutes and I dotn bother to check what tiem it is before I start shooting/filming...Yes I prefer S30V for higher end knives and for cheaper knives I like 154cm or ATS34, but I own and use all kidns of steels...
cutlerylover 3 years ago
Personally, I think, D2 is a very nice knife steel as well. S30V seems to hold an edge very long (at least for me - I EDC the Benchmade 6150 and it's got a S30V steel blade).
I would love to see CPM S110V in a knife.
Whatever... 154CM and CPM 154 are also very good knife steels. I would also recommend them for EDC folder and fixed.
Regards,
Julian
JulianH21 3 years ago
I agree I have only owned one knife in S90V and it was really nice! but as you get harder and harder steels you get the down side of having them chip on hard materials like plastic zip ties and so forth...
