Black Astrum is out with a customized Signature Card range. Meant for high profile people across Europe, the Middle East and Asia, the Swiss metal business cards come studded with diamonds. Said to be a "highly distinctive symbol of status and wealth", one set of the cards feature over 30 carats of diamonds
How do you people not get this part? Have some of you even watch the movie? Because if you did you'd understand that this particular scene gives an inkling on what Patrick Bateman's ticks are and how he processes things. In my opinion this little scene is critical to the movie.
@zMikeee It's a joke/criticism of how yuppies tend to view themselves as exceedingly tasteful and refined, but they ironically all dress the same, act the same, and have all the same tastes, and therefore they have no individuality and are slaves to the norms of their ego driven culture. By noticing ever subtler differences in the cards, they prove to themselves how refined they are, despite the fact that the cards, to a normal person, are indistinguishable.
@violatedchimp Bateman actually embodies that statement you made by wearing glasses and copying Van-Patten's decor. Everyone knows he's copying Patton but chooses to ignore him.
@violatedchimp Oh, that is obvious, of course - that the main theme is about the idiosyncrasies of the yuppie culture but you also said that "the cards, to a normal person, are indistinguishable". Isn't that true for any high art? A mere philistine wouldn't be able to tell these subtle differences. A slight variation from the popular theories but it's not that there are no differences, it's just that they focus on seemingly unimportant details.
@shoegazer666 The point, though, is that while art actually has subtlety only noticeable by those with discerning taste, yuppies extend their "refined tastes" to items of the mundane (business cards) merely to reinforce the perception of such "taste". In other words, the appearance of taste is more important than the taste itself. They are more interested in seeming refined to their peers than actually appreciating that which they critique.
@violatedchimp Fair point, but what you are suggesting seem to be no different from the situation of boys comparing their toys and as such the yuppie and business setting seem coincidental rather than contextual. As such, I reckon that this scene, more than anything, serves to reinforce Patrick Bateman's convoluted psychology as opposed to a statement or a commentary on yuppie culture.
@shoegazer666 The choice of a business card itself as the "toy" in this scenario is a statement of the culture, the point being that it is a meaningless symbol of position, rather than a "toy" that one would normally show off to impress, i.e. a fast car. In regards to it being a statement of Bateman's psychology, his psychosis is itself derived from an overemphasis of yuppie culture. The ego-driven desire for perfection enables his mania, and therefore the two cannot be separated
@mamobster1500 . The film revolves around people being self centered, not noticing important issues in Life but noticing the small materialistic things like the Business cards. At least i think it is.
"He there for thinks that is better to be unfortunate in reasonable action then to prosper to "un-reason" For it is better in a man's actions that; what is choose should "fail" (aka my jobs bill) Rather then that what is ill chosen should be successful owing to chance!" (quote from the works of Epicurus
Bret Easton Ellis later admitted that American Psycho was not intended to satirize the Wall Street life and was more about the isolated life he was living as a young man - he just decided to place it on the financial industry because he was young and angry and had a grudge against his father. Everyone can be pretty vacuous and alienating at times, not only the businessmen, that's the real story of the book. The Rules of Attraction is similar in this respect.
@MeronRamune Hello... What's your point of view of the actual New Yorker finance society? Don't you think people today are the same around Wall Street? Check twitter: @GSElevator for a laugh.
@newnilzizi It's not actually that subtle. The real point of this movie is that in the 80s everyone was the same yupie asshole. That's why at the end they mistake him for someone else. Everyone is the same, so no one knows who anyone really is. Read some interviews with the author of the book, it's really interesting.
@7dsteThere is a difference, the cards have different texture and slightly different font style and color. It's the quality of the video to blame lol.
@cornflakes12av9 Have you watched the film? youll notice that everyone in the film is practically the same person, they are all hollow self absorbed shells with no real personalities. So, in scenes like this (there are a couple of others like it) they each battle to one up each other in terms of material posession, Bateman being an absolute psychopath, cannot handle being 'beaten' by someone else, let alone someone not even in the room, he has an obsession with perfection.
Cool video and love this movie! Its amazing how a business card can be used in a movie scene with such impact! Next time i order business cards online i will remember to use this approach when i hand them out!
I have a feeling that if the order in which their cards were introduced changed, the order of impressiveness would have too. He should've just waited till someone else mentioned cards or something.
@DaveTheIceman It's worse than that. It's almost like, "I've got a big almost beige penis with a salmon coloured head and it's perfectly straight." Seriously, these guys creep me out.
I would have gone with a nice ivory beige, with a light matte that aided the eye towards the rough patterns that transcend upon the cardboard. The letters would represent the elegance of time, through the Helvetica narrow typeface that speaks of minimalism, yet touches on modernism. If Bateman were to see my business card there would be...lets just say American Pyshco-the sequel
