This is wild footage. The sound is that of a diver breathing through his regulator. You can hear the bubbles upon exhalation and the inhalation as well. The fishes, background corals and bottom substrate look wild as well.
The sound could be an HOB overflow gurgling... Really the answer is that nobody knows why Xenia pulse it could be keeping water flowing to keep clean or just for fun! but Xenia feed through osmosis
Osmosis is the diffusion of water through a semi-permeable membrane, from a low concentrate solution (high water potential) to a highly concentrated solution (low water potential), up a solute concentration gradient...
hmmm...can you send me a link to the study that concludes xenia feed via osmosis? if you are only going to respond with the same dictionary quote, dont bother. but if you know of a study, I am intrigued to read it. I've been keeping this coral for almost a decade and I've read all about it and it remains a mystery how these guys feed.
I dont have any printed source but I can tell you where I ot that from. I was talking with Anthony Calfo about maximizing the space in my coral farm. We were talking about xenia and how the feed. Basically xenia just soak in the surrounding water, take out what they need and expel the rest.
cool, I like the scuba sound too.

So again they feed through osmosis.
