i had my operation 4 days ago, i rly hope i dont need the second one, my hearing is still the same, but i hope it will get better after the recovery and the removal of the tampon =), had this shit 20 years =S , didnt know why i learned about that 1 month ago ...
Even if your hearing is damaged by the cholesteatoma it can be improved later on. I've had 3 operations to remove my chronic ear disease and cholesteatoma which (fingers crossed!) is now all gone and I am hopefully disease free. However because of the disease I had 50% hearing loss in my left ear. I an operation again 3 weeks ago to repair my hearing by connecting a piece of cartilidge to the ear drum and linking it to my 3rd ear bone (other 2 previously removed due to contamination)
@bebss07 sorry to drag on but I think this may be useful :L
I'm taking ear drops for a couple of weeks now just to rid of any wax of goo left behind from the operation and packing. I don't know yet if my hearing has improved because it was only 3 weeks ago but i have a hearing test in 6 weeks where hopefully it will've improved:) thing is though, it isn't life-threatening which means you may have to pay. Mine was free cos I live in England but I don't know about the US though. Hope this helps:)
@bebss07 i unfortunately am not so lucky i have borderline severe hearing loss in my right ear due to the cholesteatoma. i had my thrird surgery back in December and my doctor said he would try to restore some hearing if it was safe but it turns out it wasn't, if he had tried it would have gotten to close to my facial nerves leaving me paralyzed on my right side of my face :/
I just had my surgery, and it sucks having your ear stuffed with the packing. I moved around a lot and had this thing in my ear for 6 years until just now! Do not make the same mistake as me! Get it taken care of asap! I have no hearing in my right ear now. The anesesia doctor was amazing though. I didn't even get sick! Hardly any pain at all. The laser incision was really cool and should keep scaring to a minimal. No staples! Dr. Berryhill in Norman, OK did an amazing job.
it will be my 6th ear surgery for clestiatoma. they cut the back of my ear to get in so it was painful. the worst part was the anestesia aftershock. it just makes you want to throw up.
After CT scan, my doctor told me I have cholesteatoma on both ears. Can you please tell me how's your hearing recoverd after surgery. My hearing is weak but not totally deaf. I read some posts that the first month will completely deaf after surgery. Do you feel any more ear pressure or pain? I am scheduled my surgery at Sunnybrook, Toronto. OMG, I'm so nervous my hearing may totally lost after surgery. Thanks
You should be fine. I had one, doctor said it was one of the very large ones he had encountered, and I was like 8 and scared shitless, but I didn't feel a thing. No pain afterwards.
I have had many many sugerys two included removal of the cholesteatoma the last one ended with everything being removed and a rather large ear canal for the rest of my life. I was in the OR for 10 hours for the second surgery and when I awoke I felt like a semi had just smashed into me they hit a nerve caused temporary numbness in my tounge My feet hurt so bad when I walked my head hurt and I puked for a good 20 mins after waking up I was only 9 years old I was out of school for 3 weeks.
hey captaindefinder can you please tell me i'm going to have an cholesteatom surgery and I was wondering when he cut those thing in the ear just to reach cholesteatom does that hurts after surgery and my docktor said that cholesteatom in my ear is small so I guess that is a good thing and is it normal for my ear to bleed like that and will I lost my hearing please tell me! thanks
I was very scared to have surgery - it was not nearly as bad as I anticipated - I never had to take a pain pill because I never suffered any pain. The doc drilled into my mastoid to get to the cholesteatoma wasn't painful. A lot of people with cholesteatomas get the bleeding ear - I never had that - my cholesteatoma was discovered six months after having bell's palsy (which was caused from the cholesteatoma). I am much much better now. Good luck with surgery - do you have a surgery date?
i had cholesteatoma surgery last year. the surgery was 4 hours long and the pain it caused me afterwards was so brutal i nearly killed myself. and i am now compleatly deaf in my left ear. your lucky to only have a small one.
April last year I had a Cholesteatoma taken out. My Specialist said it was rather rare case to see a younger patient affected from this stupid thing as middle aged people get it mostly! I only suffered major ear aches and infections every year. My Specialist told me I had a very narrow E.T which could have caused it in the first place. Then he said I had about 6 months until it really could have gotten deadly. :S
it appears that more young children get it than middle aged adults. I have ET dysfunction and my ear drum sucked back causing a cholesteatoma to form. It tooks months before mine was diagnosed and the doctor said I probably had it 10-15 yrs. I had a second operation in Oct. 2009 to remove the last little bit and put in a prosthesis. I can hear much better and am feeling great. Are you better?
oh really? im fine now, but i have a fair bit of hearing loss in my right ear. Doc says "he'll fix it up my hearing when everything is healed over" as he had to take out a whole lot of bone and restore a "new" ear drum for me, i don't really know what that means "fix up my hearing", you wouldnt know would you? Since April 2009 i havent showered without a vasoline cottonball in my ear, and i can never swim without an earplug which sucks, it's better then having that thing in your ear though!!
wonder why you still need vaseline cottonball? I used that for about 2-3 months. I am allowed to shower and swim. I know with a cholesteatoma 2 surgeries are normally required - first to get the cholesteatoma out and second to restore hearing and make sure that all the cholesteatoma was removed the first surgery. when he says fix up your hearing he must be thinking of putting a prothesis in - my prosthesis was put in Oct. 2009 and it made a huge difference.
well i probably don't need the vaseline cottonball but i'm rather worried about getting water in it, because of the raw bone and the skin still growing over it, it could be fully healed by now as it's nearly been a year!! doc said he got the whole cholesteatoma and its unlikely it will reoccur, hopefully it won't! you might be right with the whole, putting the prothesis in. is it uncomfortable after the surgery for that one? i suppose if it's to restore the hearing, it's so worth it!
the second surgery was like the first however did last as long and recovery was even quicker - the only restriction was couldn't lift anything heavy for 4-6 weeks because the prosthesis needs to get scare tissue built up around it to help it stay in place (or something like that). It was worth it and I am a chicken when it comes to surgery.
oh that's good. i am definitely like you about surgery, i absolutely hate the needles as well! i'm fine with the whole, not lifting anything heavy for that amount time :). im seeying my specialist tomorrow morning, haven't seen him in around 4 months or so, hopefully everything is healed, and might start talking to me about a prosthesis. thanks for helping me out with those questions as you know a little more about it then what i do!
Made me laugh. Had the surgery last week. Then the next day, in an exquisite piece of bad timing, I came down with a cold, sore throat AND an infection in my, more or less, good ear. Miserable, but I'll survive.
Surgeon thinks my hearing will be restored after working his magic. Now if I could just beat this stinkin' cold...
Was the surgery easier than you expected. 2 weeks after my first surgery I came down with a bad cold - I was scared to sneeze for the 1st time after surgery but it all worked out. Do you know what caused your cholesteatoma? What were your symptoms that made you discover the cholesteatoma?
actually for the week after im doing like activities like skateboarding etc. ive had so many surgeries becuase 4 some reason it keeps coming back. and my docter is trevor mcgill from childrens hospital in boston
Lol, I just got this surgery yesterday, im feeling much better.
