What is the ratio for the acidic to find out how much lye is needed during titration. Also how do you find out how acidic the heated oil is? is it dipped with a ph paper tester which changes colour depending on how acidic it is?
I have made many batches of bio-diesel and i would like to know if you know a practical way to test rather or not i have real "bio-diesel" . Thank you
Is it true that spilled biodiesel cleaned up with clay "kitty litter" or "speedy dry" can burst into flames via spontaneous combustion? A friend told me he had that happen. A
@Saite15 Making Biodiesel is something you should only do with experienced and qualified adult supervision in an appropriate facility. Done incorrectly it can be dangerous. Although we're glad you would like to learn more about biodiesel production, perhaps you would be better off picking a different topic for your science project.
if you add too much NaOH, you complete the transesterization process and begin saponification(soap formation). Its pretty important not to OVER or Under process the oil . The amount of lye that you need to add is dependant upon the free fatty acids and glycerol compounds contained within the oil. Basically, used or waste veggie oil has a broader range of FFA than fresh oil, which is why there is a broad range of numbers for catalyst numbers. The empirical avg for Waste Veg oil is between 6-6.5g/L
oil is not acidic, it contains glycerides and fatty acid chains. The methoxide is a catalyst which esterizes the oil, i.e breaks down the FFA's. I understand that you are trying to simplify, but when you say oil is acidic its misleading.
Very inspiring, just might motivate me to post on subjects I like. Have made BD before, only about 5gal, used it to start party fires. Watched 380 demo, please exp H2SO4 calcs or is this used in place of titration? 66balm, industrial SO3 smoke stack waste? Why do u not sell the gly, I hear it goes for 70cent a pound on the open market. Is it practical to us zeolyte for moisture extraction after washing? Is specific gravity a strong indicator of quality product? TY4 lesson.
These videos are fantasitc, really well explained. One thing I am loooking for though is the percentage of 'Biodeiesel' from the ingredients, i.e: say 1tr WVO + 22cl Meth + 55gms lye = ?ltr biodiesel + ?ltr glycerine + ?ltr meth? There must a be a rough formula for this?
Instead of confusing myself with different amounts of lye. Couldnt I just make sure I used enough to cover any acidity of oil? Like 8 gallons of methanol, 2.5 pounds of lye and 40 gallons of used vegeoil? Please help, thanks
Flintrox - that's where the titraion part of the process comes in. The proportions of the mix are going to vary depending on the stock. Titration enables you to get this mix right for each batch.
great presentation on making the amber nectar, thanks.

How to you dispose of the waste products? Can you distill the waste glycerin to recapture and reuse the methanol?

Thumbs up for using the metric system.

I know that, my teacher will help me. And we will be very carefully, don't worry about that.
So could you help, sir?

Is it possible to use something else than methanol? You have to be authorized to store that in denmark....

is making biodiesel very dangerous?

Only if you're an idiot and can't follow simple instructions, or need to smoke while doing this.

1 liter WVO + 200 mL methanol + 7.5 Grams catalyst =(approx) 1 liter Biodiesel + 200 mL Glycerin (the excess catalyst ends up in the Glycerin)

The videos are awesome, but I didn't see where the washing and drying procedures are explained... are there on youtube?
but anyway the videos are very helpful, thinking to try and make it on my own, as an experiment :D
