While I have always loved Dionne, no singer who made her place in music-history by singing Burt Bacharach/Hal David ballads could ever be called the Queen of Soul. That title is reserved for the one and only Aretha! She is one of the reasons I was drawn to Soul, Motown, Jazz and R&B in the first place 38 years ago.

She may have been singing ballards that were created FOR HER, but she still sang better then Aretha and had more style then Aretha. Aretha is more Smooth Jazz type. Even Gladis Knight can be called a queen of soul. Aretha got the title because she had no competition both white or black. And if a white woman did outbeat her, it was because of one song.
