i wish i were taller. that way my toms could be set up like yours. unfortunately, god didnt give me size 12 feet so my toms are always slanted weird it seems. would you suggest buying a drum rack to enable the toms to be set up nicely? i'm 5'8" and would really like to have my toms like yours. once i even flipped my bass drum around to allow the toms to lean over the edge and rest at a nice level. Drum rack or flip the bass? that is my question
This technique took me some weeks to learn.. but not it just flows. Its awesome. BUT the problem is, i cant do it on any pedal yet. So far only on my own ;)
My method of heel toe is a bit different from this. Any time I push the pedal downward with the ball of my foot, immediately my heel slams down on the heel plate. The ball of my foot catches the top of the pedal coming back up and I repeat the process. My secret is to dribble the pedal like a basketball with short strokes and staying low to the ground allowing my heel to make contact with the heelplate. Only works well with rolls. :@)
i always found this hard to do. I actually use the slide technique which I find allot easier. I know allot of drummers who prefer the heal toe technique though so I guess its just a matter of preference. Heal toe just feels so unnatural for me. Didn't you do a live lesson comparing these 2 techniques once?
I have a couple of weeks trying this technique, I feel no difference in progress since I started, don't know what is wrong, if my-pedal or my-self... I'm about to throw the towel...
can you do a 3 and 4 vid of these techniques but with a double pedal ive already mastered it with a single pedal but now i was hoping you could show us stuff with double bass pedals
I use a Tama Iron Cobra Power Glide single bass pedal.
It seems like regardless of all the endless toying around with the settings and adjustments on the pedal, I can find one ideal setting for playing the heel toe technique.
i think this might be a dumb question but how do i know if my spring is tightened correctly on the pedal? i cant get a steady 2 hits on the bass like you. it might just be that i need more practice
I would like to see an ending point to this. I know guys are using this in metal to get (essentially) double bounces out of their double pedals. I haven't learned heel-toe yet, but I'm planning on it. I feel that I have a very fast single stroke speed, would heel-toe actually make me twice as fast; or has anyone found a breaking point?
What I mean is, eventually the pedal is just not going rebound enough to go any faster. Has anyone encountered this with a single pedal?
After a point, it's just better to use a double pedal. I don't know if I've trained well enough, but with straight sixteenths I can do maybe 130-140bpm. But, with just quick doubles I don't think there is one :).
@skillnub70 Thanks! I was just wondering if it's really worth the time. I try to consolidate my practice time so I'm only working on things that are needed.
@comedicano he said in another video foot size doesnt matter, youre actual heels dont even need to be on the pedal, it is just the rocking heel toe motion that gets this speed
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
dude "weerpool14" i totally agree! its like you can really tell when someone is good and has that uniquness about them when they are playing fast and they are only using one pedal honestly to me i think its cheating! you cant play a beat with a single pedal so you have to get two? NO! thats gay!
i got it when i did it slow, but now i try to get faster and sometimes can only make one hit, and i start to injure my ankle so i stop... i used to start down and then up my foot
That comment was full of ignorance. I won't deny single pedal techniques aren't worth learning but no need to blindly attack other drummers who just want to expand their horizons and further their skill. Also I wont say there aren't poser's out there who will only learn double bass to get laid, but don't generalize.
And then to just attack metal at the end of your comment? Not cool.
Just because your entitled to your opinion doesn't mean you have to be a douche about it.
@weerpool14 you just say that because you are incapable of using a double pedal. i play metal .. but 1 try to use all techniques possible on both feet .. so if you think about it this way .. amazing 1 footed technique + the other foot being just as good = holy fuck .. u fail
@9sactown1skater6 omfg i have the same pedals!!! UGGGH! though if you learn to do this on pdp pedals then when you move on to better pedals they are like butter :)
what i really still caNT find out is if im doing heel toe with both pedals and i start with my right...then iwhen do i put in the left foot? is it right after both hits on right
If you're trying to do this exercise with double strokes on two pedals, I would change it so I'd strike the hi-hat at the same time as the first stroke on my right foot then play the second stroke on my right then the first and second stroke on my left foot.
That would keep it in an easy to follow 4/4 but that's just how I'd do it.
Message me if you want me to email you some tabs or something.
Thanx Jared, there is a lot of this in punk music especial in songs by social distortion, and operation Ivy. I never knew how to get that quick double tap sound, now I just need to practice this.
I notice when you go to heal toe you move you whole foot up the board, then when you play a solid not so fast tempo you move your foot where i ALWAYS keep it. I just got a gig playin drums for a Zep tribute. That is about the tempo for "good Times". Now on that tunes like I have to swivel my heal towards the floor tom to get the quick hits in, and they are not consistant. Are you conciously moving up when you "skip" just wondering, cause I have to be solid. Advise? Bonzo Wrote that @ 18 yrs old

@HEAVYD2012 Right heel, right toe, left heel, left toe. Basically, think of doubles with your hands and do the same with your feet.
When i do it, i actually start lifting my left foot to get it into position right after the first stroke of my right foot.
Get some double stroke hand rudiments and practice them with your feet. It'll help a bunch.
