  • How strong is silver soldering?

  • If done correctly it will tear out the metal it was soldered to. What you do is heat it up to the correct temp to get the material to open its pores and the solder then flows into those pores and when it cools you have a bond that is very strong.

  • Thanks - good job. Do you ever use ribbon solder sandwiched between the bolt handle and bolt and then just heat it up?

  • Yes, sometimes but I always tin the bolt body and the handle to make sure that we have a good bond. If sometimes you just use the ribbon you can have areas where the silver solder does not adhere to well.

  • Thanks. Another quick one. I was doing a bolt the other day and it was a very close fit (0.0015" bolt to receiver - for accuracy) so when I timed the bolt I did not get the axial timing perfect. I simply re-heated and tapped the bolt handle over a bit, let it set and tested. I had to do this a couple of times to get it perfect. I guess that should not weaken the solder joint but was curious to know what you thought.

  • Normally not but while its hot I would add a little solder (wire) to make sure.

  • We apologize for part of the clip being blurry. However we do think that you can understand it even tho the first part is blury.
