Adding onto the Kingpack2014's post, The Godfather stayed true to the film axiom, show - don't tell. When you watch the The Godfather your in the room, experiencing their experiences. Goodfellas is a tour, not a experience. I love out, but it's miles away from The Godfather. To clarify further on the "show, don't tell" item - how many scenes in The Godfather use voice-over?

I love this movie but I hate Henry. He is such a fuck up does everything everyone tells him not to do and when he gets pinched he rats everyone out for it. Its funny that of everyone in the film he's probably the one who deserves to get wacked the most except maybe Tommy. But by the end of the movie he has to live like a regular shmuk which might be more just punishment for a guy like him who loves the gangster life.

Joe Pesci in this movie comes quite close of what most of them were - hotheaded egomaniacs with a very fast temper, who were able to hurt and even kill people for little reasons, if any reason at all. People like these guys have no sense for others whatsover and basically most of them end up with a bullet through their heads or in jails

If you want to see a timeless classic then Godfather will be your favorite mafia movie. If you prefer a gangster movie closer to real-life events, then you will prefer Goodfellas. Charachters in Goodfellas are much closer to real life. Godfather portrays this flawless romantic image of mafiosos being so smart and sly, never flamboyant, yet still keeping a strict mafia code. Good for your imagination maybe, but as far from reality as it gets.
