love when the E46 accelerate it sounds like a fart cannon. I once had a small race with one that was heavily modded (ended quickly as I let off when I realised just how much he had modded his car) and we went through an overpass. The E46 M3 sounded like it was farting through the entire tunnel section. So sad that these cars are reveared so high when they sound like shit, even in stock form.

its probably a vacuum operated flapper in the exhaust somewhere and at wide open throttle the flapper moves and bypasses resonators or certain sections of the mufflers making it free flow. search volkswagen r32 flapper mod. those cars have the same thing.

I think Dynomax makes a muffler that is similar to the mufflers on the ZR1 that you can put on about any car. About 100 bucks each but they say their mellow at an idle and while cruising but are basically little more than a straight pipe when you floor it. Just throwing that out there.

Zr1's like alot of sports cars these days have an active exhaust system, and above a certain rpm the valves or something open up and the sound is magnified. If you ever hear a f430 the sound will practically double once it gets over like 3000 rpm even if its not accelerating quickly.

active exhaust doesn't mean aftermarket,. simply put after a certain rpm i think 4000 on the zr1 a valve in the exhaust opens allowing for better air flow which in turn means more noise and hp. it also means that as a daily driver the zr1 is quieter than it normally would be!

@smoshroxnigahigasux OP says it was stock.. but my point is that the 2 stage exhaust is terribly annoying. i couldn't imagine driving it like that if the volume of the car is going to blast off like that every time it hits 3000rpm (or whenever it opens up). you would sound like an asshole while driving on surface streets as if your punching the throttle randomly as you drive. only way to save this thing is to be able to keep that valve from opening while daily driving with a button on the wheel

I think the exhaust of that ZR1 is modded, i heard a ZR1 with stock exhaust and the sound of when the valve of the exhaust was open, it was less loud than this one, but still very nice.
