  • Can you make a Nvidia installation tutorial for debian (testing, unstable), i followed several guides but it always lead to a disaster.

  • Comment removed

  • Kebian and LXebian LOOOL

  • im kinda new to linux...can u run ubuntu programms on debian? like wine for example?

  • @andrija95aki

ummmm what? yes you can run debian programs and yes you can run wine

  • @andrija95aki Ubuntu isn't compatible with Debian so use Debian packages

  • @Linux4UnMe i use windows right now and want to know if gaming is the same or worse or even better :D

  • @TheM24wolf

    for gaming... forget linux

  • ert

  • Debian 6.0 is one of my faforit distros other than ubuntu: D

  • If you're running m$ windows go for the best cpu you can afford as m$ OS's are bloatware, if you're running Linux you don't need a lot of cpu power so its less important.

  • Man, I love these distro wars! People argumenting which Linux distribution is best! Guys (and girls), the best Linux distro is the one that suits your needs! For me, that is Debian, for Kaddy it's Arch etc... Each and every one of those distros has it's advantages, and disadvantages! Cheers... (or... like Kaddy would say: Kudos! :D )

  • @MrZ0K4

    lol. indeed :D

  • @Linux4UnMe I have spoken to Tim and we both agree that m$ should be the standard and Arch User should be sent to Guantanamo!

  • @BelaFleckFan If the tim your on about is OSGUI Tim then don't believe him. He is broken. Besides its probably OSGUI Tim who made that comment anyway

  • @KaegonTheGamer Yeah I was takin' the piss out of that nut job tim cause I read this on his forum today:

"I was just thinking and referring to how Microsoft owns the Patents which Linux uses and how those new laws may help Microsoft to stop website communities like Arch Linux for example from stealing their Intellectual Property and Patents... From a Corporate Business standpoint and for people who believe in laws and paying for the right to use another companies IP this is not a problem."

  • @BelaFleckFan PSGUI Tim is a (dare I say it) retard......! He took down all of his videos promoting linux and he has also done that 20-30 minute video with the other dude who doesn't know jackshit about phones pl0x

  • @KaegonTheGamer I commented on one of his vids about a month back and said I thought it was a bad video becuase he wasn't waring an anti-static band (had his hands on the mobo standing on carpet with the puter on a vinyl top desk)

Today he removed my comment sent me a message saying I was a troll cause the comment got 30 thumbs up from I guess other youtube users who understand what ESD is (elctrostatic-damage). I agree he is totally retarded.

  • @BelaFleckFan Oh and he told me to FUCK-OFF so he's also very rude

  • @BelaFleckFan I know what you mean by the electro static sutff. I personally don't sue a band. I jsut make sure to touch a grouned object every 5-10 minutes.

  • @KaegonTheGamer I'm a qualified system support technician, my advice is pay the $5 and buy a band, most ESD you wont feel cause the voltage is only 5000-1000 volts. And the damage might not manifest itself for weeks, months or years, so it's impossible to know when or what caused it. I'm always amazed when people pay $100's for h/w they skimp on buying a $5 band.

  • @BelaFleckFan thats true. when I build my new pc later on in the year I'll pick up a £4.99 band. I'm not sure on a 4 core AMD or jsut sticking with a core i3. I don't do heave multi-tasking. its either internet+music, games (world of warcraft mainly) or leaving it on video converting (which I can do on my current system and sitll play wow and no lagg). But what should I go for.....

  • @MrZ0K4 for me its..... screw this there all free I WANTZ DEM ALLZ.

  • Only the fonts are probably better on Ubuntu, otherwise Debian stable is nicely solid and stable.

  • .deb should be the standard

  • @thowd11

    lol no

  • @Linux4UnMe trust me it should be... .deb distros top distro watch

  • @KaegonTheGamer I run Debian but to say Linux should have a standard package manager or a standard DE or a standard sound server is missing the point of what Linux is all about. The Freedom To Choose.

  • @KaegonTheGamer

and Madonna tops the Music charts.... doesn't mean I want to listen to it....

  • @Linux4UnMe Kylie FTW

  • @Linux4UnMe What music charts are you listening too :P.... Besides Debian is kind of the mother of all linux systems

  • @thowd11 NO

  • I thought slackware was the mother of all distros

  • @HigherPlanes

it has been around the longest... but only has 1 key developer last time i checked... debian has been around almost as long and has a massive dev community

  • @Linux4UnMe That's interesting to know. Ever since they released unity I've been wanting to move away from ubuntu. I was thinking either slackware which is probably a bit too advanced for me, or debian.

  • My desktop. Clean no clutter. When I need to use many programs I drag their icons onto my desktop when I have finished I clear them away. Clutter makes me lose concentration.

    h t t p: //i40.tinypic. com/14klf8o.png

  • ff to 3.13 to miss all the chit chat ffs

  • i like your ascent

  • Debian FTW

  • @BelaFleckFan

    LoL. Arch ftw :P

  • Tried Debian 6 XFCE. It's pretty spartan to start. With Debian, you'll use the root terminal a lot, and this is how you get it to work the way you want. It's not that difficult, and you'll learn and have fun too. Debian tries to follow the GPL Free Software philosophy, so don't expect a lot of eye candy, and don't expect everything to work out of the box! But, it's rock solid and reliable.

  • Hi do you know if there is any application like ubuntu tweak that would work it out in debian as such?? That, would be very nice, I am thinking... could you use linux mint repos in Debian and install just Mint's wifi driver searching?

I do have problems with wifi in my laptop and couldn't figure out and had to switch back.

    thanks man

  • @masalcedo1

I am not sure about an ubuntu-tweak like application in debian... there is gconf-editor and dconf editor "from memory... name might vary slightly" Mint repos on debian? nar, it wouldn't be compatible.... but mint's wifi driver search? what application is that? maybe you can find it on debian? you don't mean gtk-jockey do you? not sure... Debian does not include any non open drivers and often have to manually install the firmware for your chipset depending what it is o_0

  • @Linux4UnMe Hey man, I meant the application that looks for new drivers at the start sh -c 'test -e /var/cache/jockey/check || exec jockey-gtk --check' you were right, jockey-gtk that would be very interesting, having it able to install it in Debian,

  • @Linux4UnMe because for most people configuring the drivers are a pain in the ass... for me, I did have a wifi usb card that on ubuntu 9.04 got 100% wifi coverage and since Upgrading to 9.10 and on forward the coverage dropped stunningly to 30-40% because the kernel grabbed other driver which recognizes it but not as well. When I tried to install the correct driver... well got no clue how to tell the f.... kernel grab min you... !!! jaja

    cheers dude!

  • @masalcedo1

argh that sucks... hard to explain here.. but you knew the driver that is loaded in the kernel... you could remove it with "rmmod" or "modprobe -R" then manually load the correct driver with "modprobe drivername" But I am not sure how advanced in linux you are or not... so maybe that doesn't make sense when i write it here....

  • @Linux4UnMe I tried modprobe... to load the new driver, have not tried to remove it and could not find the way at that time. I am not so new I'm on linux since 9.04 and not turning back... I remember that modprobe told me it was installed and loaded but still it wasn't working, such a pity have not asked at that time!!! if I decide to replace mint11 with LMDE or Debian6 I will definitely will give you a holla. cheers from Spain, love your intro track bro!

  • Bro..I don't know if this question sound stupid, but I just want to know why each and every distro have to switch to Gnome Shell? Why they didn't stick with Gnome 2 like Debian do?

  • @rayyanputra

Debian will eventually have to embrace Gnome 3.... they can't stick with Gnome 2 forever... otherwise in time there will be incompatibilities with software/libraries. I guess other distros just want to keep up with the latest and try to make it work as best as they can

  • this is like old ubuntu! Officially switching!

  • @dozza92

yeah they will hold onto gnome 2 for a while yet in stable

  • You started off saying "Debian 6 finally", and I felt this immediate sense of revulsion for the stupidity of humanity... Later you demonstrated that you had at least some sense and maybe there is a difference between people attracted to Debian and the rest of the breeders when you admitted that you would actually rather have stable packages then something that's just new and shiny.

  • P.S. I know this is an old video, but that doesn't change the fact the this fast food ethos is deeply harmful to one's humanity. Not to mention that it's all just disgusting and stupid. It is truly the foundation for an idiocracy.. have you seen the damage this attitude has done to Ubuntu i.e. Ubuntu i.e. ubuntu 10.10, 11.4, 11.10-- decided regression from Natty Nawhal?! What the fuck is wrong with people that instead of wanting something that really works, they prefer senseless innovation?

  • Is KDE in `Debian stable` also rock solid stable?

  • @unixolsc

    Most people will say yes

But I say no. I got crashes on debian 6 kde but it's worth a try for yourself ;)

  • @Linux4UnMe Thanks!

  • If I had gnome on debian6, could I change to KDE without reinstalling debian?

Also my GRUB boot loader is not working properly, I tried to install Debian with grub on with windows 7, and had to format my computer, why is this happening?

I will greatly appreciate any help. (plus I am an average computer user so please try not include extremely technically detailed way to solve my problems unless it is necessary. )

  • The synaptic package manager isn't installed in the lxde version or the xfce.

  • Try out Crunchbang, its based on Debian and most of the packages come directly from the official Debian repositories, its Debian + Openbox = good place to start debian

  • @91jmda

    been there done that ;)

  • seriously, how TF we get debian?i search for servers or even offcial mirrors i see a bunch of DVD's and cds to download... i got freaking lost.,, please do help.

  • @JackPidwell

yeah it can get confusing.... just look for debian cd/iso images, pick a download method such as h t t p go for official cd/dvd, then either 32 bit (386) or 64 bit whichever your computer is.... or just go for multiarch.... and download any of the iso images

  • @Linux4UnMe but do i just pick one? there's loads of DVD's and cds for each system architecture... |:

  • @JackPidwell

    yeah just one

  • Is debian fast in file transfer from a partition to another or video decoding ?

  • @Crisshomes1

    o_0

That would depend more so on your hardware specs man

  • By the way I just installed Debian 6 gnome and there is no network connection or synaptic manager.

    A little help here?

  • @Crisshomes1

hehe. Depending what wifi card / chipset you got... you may need to manually install the driver on debian... it is probably a proprietary driver/firmware.... you'll have to look up the chipset and what driver to install from another internet source.... debian is not for the faint hearted ;) then you can install synaptic

  • Well I was expecting to have these stuff out of the box,I mean its a Realtek network card which is mostly compatible with lots of OS.

One more thing,I only left the Destop and system utilities option checked at the install,do I have to check something else for it to see the card and will it also install synaptic without having to install it manually?

  • @Crisshomes1@Crisshomes1

"Well I was expecting to have these stuff out of the box"

Thanks for trying Debian! One of my favorite things is the community. They have a social contract & hold elections. You can find out more about this at their website

Debian has many volunteers due to that contract which this firmware violates, and they decided to remove it.

But they still love you! Google "debian cd-including-firmware" and you'll see that they've still provided you with an "unofficial" solution

  • @indexcow

You Pray to the Lord and open the palms of your hands... usually it drops down sideways ;)

  • NaN:NaN

  • If they have the software center than I'm switch , because it's very handy to have. I like it way better than add/remove .

  • i got this to install after putting my wifi .deb drivers on a flash drive. Best distro i ever used.

  • @marky61198

    good stuff man. ;)

  • things like no built in drivers can't be classed as a good thing surely? its like saying 'my car came without an engine, but its okay because now i can pick whichever engine i want' still a pain in the arse to sort out

  • dude, when i install the CD, i reboot, then it's like arch just a text no gui. help?

  • @WhatTheFeatherTV

are you using the full installation cd not a minimilistic / netinstall? should be about 700mb

  • @Linux4UnMe i got it in the DVD, thanks :D

  • @WhatTheFeatherTV i had the same problem. make sure youre connected to the internet properly

  • hey, i need help.. Why is there no way to find a wireless connection on my laptop with Debian?

  • @LoveBarthalamewPls

You probably need to seperately install the wifi drivers/firmware since Debian choose not to include any proprietary stuff... depends on what chipset you have.... I would need more information to give you advice... and here isn't a good place. I have a forum for tech support if you want to post there. cheers

  • ¬¬ KDE fan .... and gnome?

  • @synth3tik0

    i like both

  • What KDE distro do you use? Arch?

  • @AronHoneybun

yeah Arch... but I do switch between kde and gnome often on it lol

  • 3:14 To get to the aCtual thing

  • Cool video. I'm thinking of going to Debian from Ubuntu. I'm worried Ubuntu will be ruined with Unity and Gnome won't work well on it.

  • i dont care for latest software releases... i care for stability. thats why i will give debian a try.... i lost very important work on UBUNTU gimp... i forgot to save my work.. and then gimp crashed... that was on ubuntu 11.4

  • @r4jk3

yeah it is quite stable... but i've recently found some bugs on debian which i was suprised by. You probably won't notice though......

  • @Linux4UnMe what kind of bugs? :) can u share it with the others?

  • @r4jk3

mencoder which is used by one of my fav apps "devede" is broken, I get really choppy recordings with my Mic on it where as I don't on other distros... mainly to do with the ancient ancient Alsa package they use by default, had some wifi problems with network-manager dropping out so had to use wpa_supplicant, the 64bit version didnt like my chipset and made internet speeds very slow until I updated the kernel. Bout it from what I noticed

  • maybe you will have better luck though on your hardware... and maybe it won't be as much of an issue on 32bit. dunno

  • kind of off topic, but the reason i dont like using KDE is because it doesnt look too good on a small screen like on my 15.6 inch compaq presario cq56, so i use gnome on that, and KDE on my custom built box with a 23 inch screen.

  • Not sure but I cant find a manager for third party drivers in Deb gnome. anyone got any ideas what im doing wrong?

  • @rrrandommman

yer you gotta do it manually in debian... what are you trying to install?

  • Guys from Debian didn't disabled to swtich to Netbook Edition, it wasn't in 4.4.5 version... It appeared later.

  • @aliancemd Kubuntu 10.04 shipped with KDE 4.4

  • Is Debian faster than Ubuntu?

  • @fdh2006

    yes...

  • @fdh2006 Don't listen to him... :) Debian is not faster than Ubuntu.

A lot of people say that Arch Linux is faster than Ubuntu but benchmarks demonstrated, there r no differences between distros... Only if u use KDE for example which eats a lot of Processor and RAM vs LXDE which is a very light Desktop Environment...

Search for phoronix dot com and u'll see, there are a lot of benchmarks. There are differences in performance between NTFS and EXT4 filesystems and other filesystems but not Distros

  • @aliancemd

It may not be a significant difference... but comparing the two on my hardware... debian uses slightly less resources compared to ubuntu and has less software (by default) That is why I said Yes.... It may not be noticeable on decent hardware so you may be right to an extent also

  • @Linux4UnMe yes, the distros have different apps running and different hardware resources in use

  • @aliancemd Debian is faster.

  • @Sb0yce Even on gnome (which is a heavy desktop environment compared to LXDE, Xfce, Openbox and others) i got 80MB RAM used @ Debian 6 with netinstall (just on gnome-core). I installed compiz just for fun and now its on 150MB RAM. Ive used LXDE on debian too and trust me, firefox is more heavy than the whole system.

  • Linux Mint 10 is better :P

  • @NikolaGB LMDE (LInux Mint Debian Edition) may be better than Debian as well.

  • @Sb0yce

Don't forget that the term "Linux" is just referring to the Kernel. There is no Operating System called "Linux" Distro's come out and package what they want to package on top of the Linux Kernel and that is their Linux based Operating sytem. There are many flavours of Distros from something as light as 50mb like DamnSmallLinux, to something heavier Like Sabayon Linux Kde. You can pick and choose what you want and strip out what you don't want and it's still Linux

  • Comment removed

  • Can you use windows programs(MS office)and play normal games on this OS?

  • @robbedoes1985

you can.... but it is not worth the effort and amount of time spent tweaking with emulation.....

  • @TheLinuxsensei I prefer Debian. In Ubuntu (Karmic/Lucid, 64 bit) I never got the flashplayer or javaplugin to be stable in all browsers. And in 9.10 the wireless was a nightmare. My impression is there are fewer but better threads in the Debian forums, and the documentation is less outdated. On the other hand, I don't think Ubuntu being branded as newbie-friendly is a bad thing or makes it less advanced in any way. Debian just happens to harmonize better with my logics (and hardware).

  • You can fix KDE on a virtual machine. Go to the style in the System Settings and you can set an option to use "low cpu usage low memory system" and it runs amazing.

  • @hakkai153

heyyyy Great Tip!!! I never noticed that before! Maybe this will fix the issue with kde being laggy on a netbook. wooooot

  • @Linux4UnMe - Sorry the option is called "low cpu low resolution screen", my bad. Also, I think it should run great on a netbook if you turn off the desktop effects and set that option. It certainly makes it bearable in a virtualbox. I am glad to hear that you are using Debian on a real install, it is my favourite distribution. I actually use stable. On another note, you can install the netbook version of KDE in debian if you install the package plasma-netbook. Have fun, good video! :)

  • You obviously don't know what you're talking about.....

  • @KaxiLaxi Resistance is you ass! Kubuntu & Debian FTW !!!

  • @KaxiLaxi Without Debian there would be no Ubuntu..

  • @74ryanwolf

without ubuntu there would be no steaming piles of dog shit..... haha. i'm just kidding yya:D

  • This distro is the best I have used, I have been distro hopping for a while I always find the other distros are lacking in some major area. Not stable, really ancient packages, upgrades every 6 months, broken package mangers/updaters, compiz performance, glitches, slow, etc...

This distro is awesome, it installs only the basic programs, no bloat, I can install bleeding edge programs if I want but have a stable basic OS, and no upgrades, no visual glitches, very responsive. It's almost perfect.

  • @QuiteNot

true dat.... although if your using debian stable... it is still a cycle distro except every 2 years or so instead of 6 months. But upgrading debian is more reliable than ubuntu for example......... otherwise you could use debian testing which is rolling and just keep updating to the latest version with updates.....

  • @Linux4UnMe damn really...how is the testing branch, i heard it's pretty stable anyway ? It's not like it's unstable or experimental ; )

  • One major problem that I can't work out though and have seen it before, is that commbank plays up. I thought it was commbank, but it's not, in windows i can log in first time every time, as well as every other distro i have tried, only debian for some reason plays up. Could be because of the website being h t t p s or something....any ideas ?

  • @QuiteNot

I sometimes have problems with certain websites on Firefox.... usually these websites are designed to only support Windows Explorer... try adding a firefox plugin called "user agent switcher" and set it to run in Windows Explorer mode and give that website another try. I bet ya it will work

  • @Linux4UnMe I might try that, cause i noticed chromium works just fine. It's a firefox/debian problem i believe.

  • @QuiteNot

cool. Or maybe the newer versions of firefox have fixed that problem? maybe try that too ;)

  • @Linux4UnMe Yeh, maybe a firefox 4 beta might fix the problem....but in no other distro have i had this problem. Probably because of my inexperience in setting up debian, probably needs a package to make it work.

  • Tried the latest firefox 4 beta, no good either.

  • @QuiteNot

no idea mate..... but it works on other distros? Maybe Debian's version of firefox has a feature disabled by default...... Maybe the website uses Java? which is probly not installed by default on debian? only thing I can think of.......... did you try the user agent plugin? if all else fails post on the debian forums... you will surely get a quick reply about it

  • @Linux4UnMe Could be, cause i installed java made sure it was working. The user agent plugin i set to internet explorer 8 no good either. I'll try the forums. Thanks.

  • @QuiteNot

testing branch is good and quite stable...but you will get bugs still

  • @Linux4UnMe Testing might be ok and I can't wait for gnome 3 it looks really different and cool. But I just tried btnx in debian and it just works. I have never seen it just work before. I can't give up this amount of stability.

  • single distro worth over ubuntu for casual user in a linux os ( stability will give new ppl trust in change, over windows )

  • WHAT THE FUCK IS A FUCKING DEBIAN?!

(Its gay as hell, thats what it is....)

  • @boomboomxz

What's gay is retarded Comments from the mind of an amateur 10 year old

  • @Linux4UnMe lol im 13 and dont think as like this... balblabla...

  • @MrLinuxkid

    errmmm. ok............ :s

  • nice.........check yr mail

  • @sneekylinux

    check my mail??

  • Nice review - Thanks.

  • @TheLinuxsensei

Nothing wrong with Ubuntu.... But I don't find Debian hard at all to get up and running the way I want it.... I prefer Debian Squeeze over Ubuntu because it has next to no obvious bugs and all the packages are patched and stable to the point where Ubuntu could never match that quality... Squeeze is intended for a Production Environment where you can't afford for anything to go wrong with it. But to each his own eh

    lol Barry Norman

  • Debian is definitely a great and stable OS

  • Nice review mate, might try this as my secondary distro as well

  • @TheLinuxsensei Depends on the user I guess and preferences; I like Ubuntu and indeed I started out with it but I find it includes too much junk I just don't want these days so I just stick to Arch. And well I'm a serial tinkerer lol

  • The space theme is because the character "Squeeze" in Toy Stoy is a 3 eyed alien... Nice review

  • @PingJocky69

true dat. thanx for reminding me hehe ;)

  • Great video, thanks for the review!

  • Looks good, but I'll stick with Ubuntu. I may start playing with kde.

  • I tried this in VBox but couldnt for the life of me get the guest additions installed, also couldnt add myself to sudoers (that was the message)..if you know how to do this with Debian as guest I would be very grateful to hear from you. Regards

  • @icekool666

you can just add the guest additions from within virtualbox, make sure it is mounted in virtualbox when you boot into the installed distro, go into /media and install the x86 one with "./blahblah.x86"

Debian does not use sudo.... you use "su"

  • @Linux4UnMe thanks for you're answer, yes I have done this successfully a lot of times in other guest OS's and tried just 'su' in Debian, it still didnt want it though. I've been pulling my hair out over this. I always follow the steps as per your comment. Maybe just a glitch in either the guest install or VBox itself, no big deal but just a pain :-)

  • I love debian, one of my favourites, its just really annoying that 4.5 or 4.6 havent been packaged yet, not even for unstable lol!
