I couldn't agree more with the person in the video. I was raised in the suburbs. My parents thought it was a great place to raise children. So as a result of being bored to death and no place to go until we were able to drive, my brother and I started smoking pot in the backyard. My childhood memories are limited to staring at the back of the front seats of my parents' car. Because we were always stuck in traffic. I live in Lincoln Park, Chicago now. Love it. My life doesn't depend on cars.
I was a town planner for 10 years. During this time I realized that town planners do not do what they studied to do. At university we were taught about REDUCING urban sprawl via ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE "alternatives" etc etc. When I worked for a government department my world was turned upside down. I realized the reality of town planning - namely "facilitating" a "false economy" via developers manipulating councils through donations and government giving them first preference in return.
I hate highlands ranch so much I'm from Denver and i live in aurora for most of my life and now moving back thank god I found a house the people here suck asshole in highlands ranch rich snobby people and their kids just try to make this place look bad when there is no crime whatsoever so to everyone don't move to highlands ranch the place is soooo boring move somewhere like Denver or aurora that is where the fun is FUCK THE HR,..srry for my profanity I'm from denver
Wow, you're so enlightened! Yeah, they should take these houses and spread them waaaaay out...cover the entire state with houses maybe. Maybe make solar voltaic panels mandatory? That way people can power their grow lights off the grid. These annoying families raising kids and working their asses off. Grrrr, makes me mad too! We should all collect unemployment, grow our hair long and become "tolerant" of the way other people live! Right? Get a job.
in china they provide solar panels even for villages... the US is falling behind because of stupidity, arrogance, and greed. Anyway glad I grew up as a cosmopolitan. Urban and Rural areas are much better off than suburbs.. they serve purposes for civilization. Suburbs serve no purpose, and no real sense of community.
Of course they serve a purpose, to get away from minorities! :D Seriously, that is how racism indirectly causes environmental damage, since these people drive many miles to work in the city and commute back home.
seeing that I live in a middle class black neighborhood that was once a middle class white neighborhood in the 60s , yea I do know that history man. I usually don't bring it up in debates because well most white people where I am located at will call me racist for bringing race into it then call me a n******* in the same breath. So its quite tough on minorities. We are constantly questioned, damned if we do damned if we don't. I am sticking to the expat scene for this reason.
@lordblazer Regarding the solar panels not being mainstream here I blame entrenched oil interests (Reagan took solar panels off the White House roof, and factoring in accelerated change they should hypothetically be mainstream by now), and China is grabbing a huge share of the solar panel market. There are even HOAs where solar panels aren't allowed! Here in New England we associate racism with either rednecks or townies. It is amazing how hypocritical the people where you were are.
About the prejudice, while it is aweful Joe Redneck needs to understand that he has similar interests with Mexican migrant workers and inner-city blacks whom fox news tells him to distrusts, and has more in common with them than white sales managers and other middle-class. People used to be able to graduate with just a high school diploma and still be middle class, today with college inflation a master's degree will be the new bachelor's, so the bar keeps moving and changing as if (cont.)
someone is trying to keep others out. The relatively high probability of upward social mobility made America great, and since that has been declining for decades... (do the math) Of course, middle class parents do not want their children competing with Redneck Joe or migrant worker Pedro's children for college, unadvertised unpaid internship, and job spots. While being black is hard at least FOB immigrants from Africa and Europe if they hide their accents enough can pass for "true" Americans

@jaymthegenius solar panel water boilers are on every building in China even within the villages. I've spent some time in China. Yea pretty much racism in oklahoma is quite bad man. When you have a senator saying that all black people she knows is lazy. Then something is wrong with the constituents that voted her in. Anyway a lot of countries are doing things the US just refuses to do (mass transit, high speed rail lines) and the US justifies it as saying it isn't economically viable.
@lordblazer That would be great to have here in America, but greedy interests are intellectually dishonest enough to present their own sources as the one and only way. Such greed has adverse ramifications for the environment too. As for the senator saying that it is completely unacceptable, I don't care if it is Oklahoma. Even here I've seen a white lady roll up her windows and locked every door when seeing a group of Latino kids crossing the street. Another lady did the same even to a

america can be such a depressing place to live minus NYC, san francisco or other few cities that sort of break away from the norm of the average boring american city.
I lived in san diego for two years and HATED IT, the weather is nice, the beaches are nice but you have to drive every fucking where, people dont connect, no one talks to the other, even in the city center u still feel like u never left suburbia, Los angeles was the same too.
san francisco was the only good place in california.
The only way to STOP urban sprawl is to reign-in our absurdly-high immigration levels.
Canada imports over 250,000 LEGAL/'permanent' immigrants a year Actually, the number is probably closer to 400,000, when illegal and 'temporary' workers are factored in (increasingly, the 'temporary workers' are being laid-off, but not deported).
Environmental activists can't be so politically-incorrect and spineless. Only the real estate and developers' lobbies benefit from immigration-fuelled urban sprawl.
Suburban sprawl and population (native, immigrant or otherwise) are mutually exclusive issues. Sprawl is an issue having to with the built environment and the institutional and policy barriers that prevent more sustainable and walkable development patterns instead.
Sprawl reform is needed regardless of population growth issues.
how in the world suburban sprawl is related to immigration levels? especially on an enormous almost empty country like canada?
the average low wage immigrant looking for a better future cant afford one of those suburbia houses with a backyard and an SUV to match with the whole thing.
the people who live in those soul killing places are usually middle class, jack asses with their fat wives and their annoying depressed emo children!
Canada is NOT "an enormous almost empty country"--only 5% of the land is arable, and that's where most of our 250k+/year immigrants settle (Southern Ontario and Alberta, Lower Mainland). Our freshwater resources are also finite and already overtaxed.
In Canada, the average immigrant (thanks to the Immigrant Entrepreneur program) is middle-to-upper-income. They are the ones buying the suburban homes and SUVs.
Sprawl is the result of population growth, PERIOD, of which immigration is the driver.
I live in south hamptons and nobody has energy efficent houses, but they do use solar panels to heat their swimming pools (trust me it works very good).
There's nobody in their backyards because the kids are smoking pot in the mall parking lot, Mom is over at the neighbor's getting rammed, and Dad is locked up inside his office/den, trying to get the project done for work so he can get that bonus that the family needs so much to be able to pay the mortgage and line of credit on the house that's worth less than what he owes on it.

FUCK YOU!
pronatalist, shut up and get off youtube, obviously you are mentally retarded or trying to piss people off. You always try to get in an argument with someone. If you can't figure out that 12 kids is unsustainable then your an uneducated idiot. Your arguments for increased population are complete stupidity because more people = more environmental problems and lower quality of life. I don't want to live in the kind of world you envision with more people, your wasting your time arguing.
Denver isn't bad niether is highlands ranch i live there buddy i got stabbed in the foot by a kid i was pissing off im a kid too on saturdays we do a lot of stuff at stores my house my mom is crazy about being energy efficient and the kid that stabbed me was high on weed for a while we dont have good weed i bet me smoked for 10 minutes and wasnt high
BTW, there's no activity on Sat. because we spend time with our kids and neighbors at the local parks that aren't overcrowded. He complains about the power grids out here? Denver has more power lines and they leave the lights on overnight in the businesses. Who are the real Earth killers here? You have no idea, idiot. Do Denverites have mortgages? How do they pay for those million dollar condos that don't use solar? Get a job and an education if you want people to take you seriously.
On another note, LOW income housing, have you been to ANY part of Denver to see the UGLY shit houses that were built forty years ago. Row and row of brick shit houses that cost more and use lots more energy to live in. Plus, the crime rate is much lower and my kids are doing better in the MUCH better school district.
By the way, I know all my neighbors and we have more racial diversity in one block than some Denver areas have in ten blocks. Get a life crack head!
Hey dope head, did you notice the SMOG in Denver while you taped this? Just one more reason not to live there! I moved from the city to H.R. to get away from the high cost of living but you crack heads can't figure that out. Smaller houses cost more in the city and they are waaaaay less energy efficient. My 2800sqft house costs less to heat and cool than my old 1300sqft house. Plus the commute to a job is a lot longer from Denver than from here so I use less gas now and it also costs less here.
You really don't get it. People don't WANT to know each other. I live in a just such a place as this BECAUSE there are no people around having BBQ's. The internet now makes it possible to work from home. Citys suck. Plow them under and plant corn
What's even more insane than all this new development is that each house is producing UP TO 12 or more kids for each house (at least in Utah) and in twenty years there will be that many more houses ruining the landscape, I mean where are the kids going to live? People need to wake up. This isn't the American Dream, more like the American Nightmare. Maybe when water resources are stretched to the limit people will slow down.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
To mtlhed13:
Of course each house should be producing 12 or more children, or however many children they can, or welcoming "all the children that God gives," as humans were not designed to use any means of "birth control."
More and more people would be glad to live. Most everybody wants or ends up having children. With more people coming alive, that's all the more people to experience and benefit from life.
Encourage large families worldwide so that far more people may experience life.
NO MORE OF THAT UGLY, DISFUNCTIONAL, DEPRESSING, UNHEALTHY "SUBURBIA" STUFF WE LIVE THAT LACKS SENSE OF COMMUNITY, CHARACTER, & CULTURE THAT IS BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, COSTLY, AND JAMMED WITH CARS!!!!???
New Urbanism reduces the need for driving where we could SAVE OUR RESOURCES ON BETTER THINGS!!!!!
Beautiful Architecture and Design Here We Come!!!!!!!!!!!!
my grandpa was tellin me back in his day everyone either lived in the city or on the farm there was no in between. im fine with the city, and im fine with rural areas but the suburbs are hell.
i dont think you get the point. its one thing to raise a family in a neighborhood that is "normal" to most standards then to yours. Our point is that this type and style of neighborhood is and will be the downfall. with homes this big how can you stay close enough to one another to raise a healthy child cause your too far from one another, im not saying to live in a box or anything but damn.
First of all I moved to Highlands Ranch a little over a year ago from Miami. You want to see shit houses? Go live in Miami for a while. Highlands Ranch is the nicest and safest place that I have EVER lived in.
Second, What do you expect people to do, raise kids downtown, spend twice as much on a nice house closer to the city that is half the size. Do you people realize that most families in Highlands Ranch have kids, and most of those have more than one.
I agree with EVERYTHING! We lived in HR for 6 (too long) years, and I thought I was going to lose my mind. Don't forget about the "Home owner's Association" where they actually have people patrol the neighborhoods to make sure everyone is conforming to the other identical homes. The first week we moved there we got a letter from the association stating we had to weed our little 2'x2' garden or we would be fined. From then on the "Association" was Known to us as the "Weed Police".
We used to call the Housing Association the "Highlands Ranch Gods" because they overlooked everything. Yeah...We replaced the deck on the back of our house (which was approved) but then they tried to retract it because we didnt have the posts in the ground approved before the rest of the deck was build. We we shoved it up their asses.
he's got a point though man. its not just that neighborhood its a nation wide issue. i doubt that hes mad cause he cant afford it its because those shitty "houses" are a joke.
i live in highlands ranch.i have lived in other places than a suberb its only a fraction of the kids here whos parents dont teach them decency in a rich comunity i would think that they can afford manners.
Suburbia is horrible!!!! the homes and buildings are ugly!!! the places are boring and have little connectivity and waste our energy resources!!! STOP THIS MADNESS!!!
I recently drove through this neighborhood, and would have to agree with about 99% of what is said. I was astonished on how everything all looked the same, beige houses, beige suv's, and all white people, and if you go to the top of chatfield resevoir and look down you see just what he's stating a sea of shit houses, and those people whom live there are very rude and impatient... I do not see what is so attractive about living there
Man that neighborhood looks like typical concrete jungle. Where's the parks and nature trails? Nothing but crappy houses and concrete. ugh
I'm glad to live in a nice classical neighborhood within walking distance of a small vibrant downtown. Sadly I know most people in other areas are not so lucky. :(
....Many neighborhoods have barbeque's and get togethers... Every year our neighbors have 2 gatherings... and yes we do talk to each other here in Highlands Ranch... Get over it... Just because your poor and you have no job doesn't mean you need to bash the successful people...
this guy has no idea how low even the best solar panels convert light to power 15% conversion at best your going need ALOT of those very expensive panels to power a small neighborhood
and whats wrong with low income housing this assholes is a elitist
Solar panels on the rooftops of those houses would be effectively supplemental. Internal combustion engines have abysmal conversion efficiency, but the output is still substantial for our application. I find it unfortunate that the new homes of today will become the unwanted slums of tomorrow. Why don't we maintain what we build, instead of wasting an invaluable resource building anew.
"They're not pretty up close. They're not pretty from a distance. There is ZERO redeeming value to a neighborhood"
You said it, my friend!!! Plus, many of those home dwellers are all going to get brain cancer with those high energy power lines in their backyards!!!
I personally grew up in middle-upper class suburbia and I realize that it's completely doomed. I need to take a car to get anywhere at all.
If a person wants to have a quiet life away from a city, move to a (self-contained) city of about 10,000 - 20,000 people. Live AND work in that city. I might not be a big CEO, but I like the idea of owning $80,000 house and making $15K a year than paying for a $800,000 house and making $80K a year.
suburbs waist nature and cause stress. suburban sprawl causes home prices to go up cause of mortgages. people with all that land don't grow anything on it at all. they don't have time to play on it 'cause they need to get on the freeway at 4 am. They watch more TV in the suburbs than in the city so what's the point. People walk and exercise less in suburbs than in urban areas. So in essence suburbites waste the environment. I see more pedestrians in NYC than in OC calif.
THE PROBLEM is: Huge money has been wasted on malinvestments in the US suburbs, and the DEBT is still with Us. We need to restructure and write off. Google: "restructuring america's suburban dream"
It's pretty true that people feel isolated in the suburbs. As "perfect" as it is, people tend to pop into their little bubbles and just stay there. I'm in the middle of it now, but I'm taking steps to get out ASAP...
Broke ass dumb fucking Highland Ranchers in there shit built all Beige Track homes driving there Beige SUV, and they all have fat ugly wives wearing Beige Khaki's and a Moo-Moo, I know I live and have a plastic surgery center in Cherry Creek and 50% of the people I see are fat, un-happy, pissed off HR suburban housewifes, fuck that place and Nuke it.
these are shit houses. The Economy is on the verge of collapse because of the reckless over construction of these houses and reckless lending. An economy based on houses and mortages...what bullsh*t. i can't belive the economy is going to collapse because of this bullsh*t
this video says it all. ever since i moved from L.A. to the suburbs, all i see is assh*oles pretending their rich w/ their McMansions and SUV's when their in alot of debt. America is such a great place to live but there's a problem. America lost it's character because of the suburbs
no one is rich in HR your just all in debt up to your ass, come see my 5 milion dollar loft on 251 steele st in cherry creek I will so you rich, bitch
You guys are all jealous that you cannot afford to live in Highlands Ranch. It is the best place ever, I enjoy my wealth. It must suck to be poor. So shut the hell up and get over the fact you will never live with us.
PS...the weed is amazing, we can afford the good stuff.
Wow, a 19 year old is rich? Are you a stripper? Do you deal drugs? Or maybe it's your parents that are rich. I am sure if they kicked you out of THEIR house today you would either end up on the street selling yourself for money or using all your credit cards until they are maxed out and then end up on the street anyway.
live with us? who the fuck would want? to your lives suck so bad you all beige track home trash people have to come down to my Neighbor hood in Cherry Creek every weekend to escape your pathetic existence in The Beige Land of Oz, come to my Dr's Office on 4th and Clayton I will write u a scrpt for some zoloft.
Was there a point to this? This video didn't provide any useful or correct information. It looked like a couple of guys with a video camera that got bored one Saturday. Next time I suggest using your time and energy on something useful. For instance, instead of complaining about the lack of solar power in the city, why not start an organization that raises money to buy solar panels for poor people that want them. Just a thought.
Where the hell did these automatons come from? Guys, step out of the burbs. Live in the city for 6 months. Just try it. You'll never know just how fucking free you are in the concrete jungle.
Exacly not all of HR is rich I mean I don't live in a huge house or anything but because I do live in HR we all get bad reps for where we live now something is wrong if you really like bashing which is so wrong get your facts staight!
informative. oh sorry was that too big of a word for you? i bet these houses are more energy efficiant than yours. you know im not rich so stop being stereotypical. how bout this. guys like you with beards like that are all gay because they look like they belong on brokeback mountain. go fuck your sister
fuck you dick wad. your just pissed because your moms a hooker, your dads in jail and you live in a rundown shithole. go jump in a bed of needles and while your at it try to grow a dick. that wasnt even funny or
Well, does ur house have solar panels or "Produce" power? i bet not, just cuz highlands ranch is cool, doesnt mean u hafta go all "Pee pee vag!na" on us! I LOVE JEEBUS!

Denver has more power lines and they leave the lights on overnight in the businesses. Who are the real Earth killers here? You have no idea, idiot. Do Denverites have mortgages? How do they pay for those million dollar condos that don't use solar? Get a job and an education if you want people to take you seriously.
now3m3tyb 3 years ago
On another note, LOW income housing, have you been to ANY part of Denver to see the UGLY shit houses that were built forty years ago. Row and row of brick shit houses that cost more and use lots more energy to live in. Plus, the crime rate is much lower and my kids are doing better in the MUCH better school district.
By the way, I know all my neighbors and we have more racial diversity in one block than some Denver areas have in ten blocks. Get a life crack head!
now3m3tyb 3 years ago
Hey dope head, did you notice the SMOG in Denver while you taped this? Just one more reason not to live there! I moved from the city to H.R. to get away from the high cost of living but you crack heads can't figure that out. Smaller houses cost more in the city and they are waaaaay less energy efficient. My 2800sqft house costs less to heat and cool than my old 1300sqft house. Plus the commute to a job is a lot longer from Denver than from here so I use less gas now and it also costs less here.
now3m3tyb 3 years ago

Encourage large families worldwide so that far more people may experience life.

i dont think you get the point. its one thing to raise a family in a neighborhood that is "normal" to most standards then to yours.

Do you people realize that most families in Highlands Ranch have kids, and most of those have more than one.
fltoco 3 years ago
the early days of the ranch where good days not like those huge houses in the highwoods or by some high schools.
alamont69 3 years ago
I agree with EVERYTHING! We lived in HR for 6 (too long) years, and I thought I was going to lose my mind. Don't forget about the "Home owner's Association" where they actually have people patrol the neighborhoods to make sure everyone is conforming to the other identical homes. The first week we moved there we got a letter from the association stating we had to weed our little 2'x2' garden or we would be fined. From then on the "Association" was Known to us as the "Weed Police".
Griff88fan 3 years ago
We used to call the Housing Association the "Highlands Ranch Gods" because they overlooked everything. Yeah...We replaced the deck on the back of our house (which was approved) but then they tried to retract it because we didnt have the posts in the ground approved before the rest of the deck was build. We we shoved it up their asses.

he's got a point though man. its not just that neighborhood its a nation wide issue. i doubt that hes mad cause he cant afford it its because those shitty "houses" are a joke.

**5** Great Video !
Vlexei 3 years ago
I recently drove through this neighborhood, and would have to agree with about 99% of what is said. I was astonished on how everything all looked the same, beige houses, beige suv's, and all white people, and if you go to the top of chatfield resevoir and look down you see just what he's stating a sea of shit houses, and those people whom live there are very rude and impatient... I do not see what is so attractive about living there
LittleMoosehoof 3 years ago 9
can you watch the video that I made and comment on it please.
KirillRealtorMS 3 years ago
Man that neighborhood looks like typical concrete jungle. Where's the parks and nature trails? Nothing but crappy houses and concrete. ugh
I'm glad to live in a nice classical neighborhood within walking distance of a small vibrant downtown. Sadly I know most people in other areas are not so lucky. :(
mmichal 3 years ago 4
....Many neighborhoods have barbeque's and get togethers... Every year our neighbors have 2 gatherings... and yes we do talk to each other here in Highlands Ranch... Get over it... Just because your poor and you have no job doesn't mean you need to bash the successful people...
Pedwily 3 years ago
I would bet that all of those houses were empty because no one can afford live in them.

"seas of shit houses" indeed! developers and real estate agents should be run out of town forever--or locked up for a helluva long time.
neworldorder65 3 years ago 2
this guy has no idea how low even the best solar panels convert light to power 15% conversion at best your going need ALOT of those very expensive panels to power a small neighborhood
and whats wrong with low income housing this assholes is a elitist
thenollie3 3 years ago
Solar panels on the rooftops of those houses would be effectively supplemental. Internal combustion engines have abysmal conversion efficiency, but the output is still substantial for our application. I find it unfortunate that the new homes of today will become the unwanted slums of tomorrow. Why don't we maintain what we build, instead of wasting an invaluable resource building anew.

"They don't talk to each other. They don't know each other. There is no activity. Nobody in their backyard. It's Saturday!"

I personally grew up in middle-upper class suburbia and I realize that it's completely doomed. I need to take a car to get anywhere at all.
If a person wants to have a quiet life away from a city, move to a (self-contained) city of about 10,000 - 20,000 people. Live AND work in that city. I might not be a big CEO, but I like the idea of owning $80,000 house and making $15K a year than paying for a $800,000 house and making $80K a year.
landongendur 3 years ago 2
i agree with you.
suburbs waist nature and cause stress. suburban sprawl causes home prices to go up cause of mortgages. people with all that land don't grow anything on it at all. they don't have time to play on it 'cause they need to get on the freeway at 4 am. They watch more TV in the suburbs than in the city so what's the point. People walk and exercise less in suburbs than in urban areas. So in essence suburbites waste the environment. I see more pedestrians in NYC than in OC calif.

It's pretty true that people feel isolated in the suburbs. As "perfect" as it is, people tend to pop into their little bubbles and just stay there. I'm in the middle of it now, but I'm taking steps to get out ASAP...

Wow, a 19 year old is rich? Are you a stripper? Do you deal drugs? Or maybe it's your parents that are rich.
