Hey we are putting on a tribute event for Ari Up in Bristol, UK (30.07.11) with Tessa Pollitt, Hollie Cook, Viv Albertine, Adrian Sherwood and Mark Stewart! Please watch our ad youtube.com/watch?v=qE5BCjxH5gM and check out our facebook event if you are interested? Big Love
I love the Slits too, but the only fly in the ointment for me, as an egalitarian men's rights activist, is Ari's use of VICTIM-feminist lyrics, like 'whilst walking I could have been raped on Ladbroke Grove', or ending a song on 'typical boys' like they are the cause of typical girls. She was only 14 or 16 when she wrote it, and even then, seemed to be singing it with a knowing silliness. Ultimately, she did not whinge at all, and lived the life of an entrepreneur, so is a REAL feminist icon.
@tom181071 I kind of agree with you, but in many ways that lyric could have been seen as being an early rallying cry for reclaim the streets, at a time when being raped was and still is a massive and very real fear for women.
Real fear, less real actual threat - the 1 in 4 women raped stat false. More like 1 in 20-25. Also, chances of being raped on street, or meeting assailant on street (i.e. stranger rape) only 6% of rapes, so approximately 1 in 4-500 women stranger raped. Reclaim the streets/take back the night fems refuse to acknowledge rape hysteria they have generated. Men in much greater danger on streets. It wasn't just Ari writing lyrics though, which might explain her post-modern tone on lyrics she sang.
REally great band while they were doing this. This is one of the tracks they recorded for John Peel. The other 3 tracks are just as good. I can't confirm it but I heard somewhere that they had also recorded something for Capital radio. Shortly after this session they did an inteview for the NME and it didn't go too well. 3 weeks after that Palmolive parted with the group and they were without a proper drummer for 2 years. When they recorded CUT they'd changed completely.
Totally agree. JP sessions superb. I heard this when they it was first broadcast on my little tranny 10pm Mon-Thurs. Live - they blew my 15 year old surburban head off.
@sardino1 ...and there was me sat with finger permanantly glued to pause button of my ghetto blaster, hoping to catch the good uns. This was certainly one of them. The moment I heard Peel's signature tune, I went into a weird trance - couldn't distract me!!
Now, over 30 years later I'm about to do a marathon transfer from cassette to PC, so stay tuned in this area. :-))

The 1st all-female punk band of any repute - ahead of The Go Go's by about 1 year....

Saw them in Berlin and London when they were still a punk band, before they got signed. More fun then.

Ari forgot the lyrics!

Not true about the guitars not being tuned. The only thing Keith Levene ever taught Viv was how to tune up. He left the rest to her...

The Slits, X-Ray Spex, Hazel O'Connor, Blondie and The Pretenders. Soundtrack to my childhood. No wonder I'm a feminist.

RIP Ari. Apparently, when they recorded the Peel session they had to get someone else to tune their guitars because they didn't know how to do it!

Does anybody have video of them doing "Twighlight Zone" (where the bullet hits the bone) from Golden Earing?

way better than the version on 'cut', in my opinion. always preferred palmolive's heavy, tribal drums to budgie's lightwieght tippy-tapping.
