I like to add jicama in small pieces to fruit salad after coating it with lime juice. It picks up flavors from grapes cut in half and pineapple really well.
we this in our country (Philippines) too.. we call it "Singkamas" (SING-kah-mas).. back in the old days when the Spaniards colonized our country, they saw this root crop and recognized it and asked the locals for it.. the locals didn't even know they could be eaten.. then the Spaniards asked for five more (cinco mas) hence the term "singkamas" because they thought it was its name.. ^_^
I go to that International Market all the time usually when I go to Georgetown Market I go there too. Last time I was there I got some dried Wakame seaweed and I've made a lot of salads with it, it's very good for you an quite cheap (for $6 at least 10-20 salads depending on size)
International store...where in America is there not a sizable Hispanic community? I can get Jicama at Walmart, HT, Food Lion, not to mention all the Hispanic stores. (Charlotte, NC)
@sweetwater88 you are lucky. i live in canada in a small city. no international grocer and i have never seen a hispanic grocery store, even when i lived in bigger cities, just asian grocery stores
@thatoneguyonline i see this is a few years old..but just wanted to tell ya that i worked in a deli at a food co-op and we made a raw jicama salad..i forget everything that was added to it. but the main thing that was diced very fine and tossed with it was cilantro. and i gotta tell u that the jicama and the cilantro were GREAT together!!...real crisp clean flavor...and like lambyii said...lemon juice for sure.
I really hate the flavor of jicama. It's sweet and strange. nothing like potato. I use zuchinni instead for fries. I use it with a cashew ranch I make and it's delicious and tastes like real curly fries.
Yeah, I don't like that cayenne gets hotter as it sits. So, if you keep the fries as left overs than they are like super hot the next day. They were kinda soggy the next day, too, because of the oil.
i am going to buy a deyhdrator tomorrow! i dont want to start my master cleanse yet b ecause i had to eat with my boss today. but i need to start i got a lot of lemons.
if their not fried they should be called raws

i have a suggestion.......i'm from mexican descent and we eat these a lot. basically, do everything you said.....but add LEMON juice.
also if you can find this seasoning called "tajin" then use that. jicama, tajin and lemon juice FOR THE WIN!

Thanks for the info!

Tajin is the name of the company that makes the spices. You are probably talking about their Fruit Seasoning spice.

does it taste like a potato? is the consistency like a potato?
fr3d420 3 years ago
No, it's a lot more moist.
thatoneguyonline 3 years ago
it's like an apple. And sweet too. You can peel 'em easy with the fingers vertically. I eat them plain in hand like an apple..
