it was great except i dont have a clue how to take the photo. uncover pinhole to start exposure? cover to end? it was just too good of a video not to show that, or any of your results. i can make the camera, clueless how to take the pic. thumbs up for effort
Well after watching lets say around 6 videos this is the best design for a 35mm pinhole camera, however perhaps taking the step of painting the box black could help get better results.
@bloodkaiser360 the same thing that would happen if you over expose any photo, be it digital or analog. if its mega over exposed then you end up with pretty much just white, if its only a little over exposed you get an image but there is no detail, and mostly its white ^_^
To take the picture, you remove the tape. And then put the "camera" on a flat surface and make sure it doesn't move. You might have to play around with how long you leave the tape off for. It depends on the lighting. Leaving the tape off longer will let in more light, which will expose the film more. When you're finished put the tape back over the pinhole and advance your film for the next picture :)
Thats something you have to experiment with. My photography class made pin hole cameras out of otmeal cans, and we had to expose ares for about 6 min in a semi lit area, and only a few pictures came out semi clearly, so you have to use try different things..
it depends in how much light you have. In low lighting conditions you want to leave the tape off for longer.
It's always "guess and check" with this sort of thing since they are handmade, each one is different. if the circumference of the hole is slightly larger you need less time to shot an image.
i know how to take a pic what you do is you taki it out side and count il you get to the hour like the hour is four oclock and all you do is count to four so its 1234
Don't give up! Your problem is that the photos were exposed to too much light. You can solve this by opening your shutter for a shorter amount of time. You might also have made the pinhole too big. Instead of poking the needle through, roll it in between your fingers using little pressure to just barely make a hole. The ideal diameter for this size of camera is much less than a milimeter, so be gentle with that pin!
great video. i've already built one using these instructions. my only concern though is, doesn't the image on the actual film have to be a certain size so that it correctly results in a 3x5 picture when developed? do pictures end up overlapping because their not the correct size?
has anyone actually developed their pictures and gotten them to work out perfectly?
Part of the fun of this type of photography is exactly that uncertainty that you are talking about. You won't get perfect pictures with one of these. Personally I prefer a square frame - You'll just have a small black border that you can cut off.
How do you get them developed? I got everything except that. Either that I need to find out to get them developed(Not in a dark room) or I should just make a light box. Please answer!(:
I was just wondering what the aperture for that camera was? and what the focal length of the pin hole lens was? and how do you know how long to expose it for
if you know how to calculate an exposure then how dont you know how to figure out the focal length and aperture? use google. You measure it.. Also, when making this you can use your own predetermined hole/aperture and you control its size. Buy pins that tell you the size. Strange question! and you can always experiment too.
All you have to do to make an exposure is remove the small piece of tape covering the hole. The longer you leave the tape off the brighter the exposure will be so it depends on lighting conditions. On a sunny day I found 2 seconds was good.
It's possible! I haven't tried to record the image made inside the box with a digital camera yet though. If you try it let me know the technical details!
For our first project in my advanced photography class we made pinholes. I used a oatmeal container. We spray painted and used electrical tape to make sure they were light tight. Fun Project
OK another question... when I advance the film, sometimes I can hear it slip back so I advance it a little bit more cause I don't want a double exposure. Anyone else experience this? Did it cause any problems?
This is great! it's not only creative and resourceful, but it works! I enjoyed the refreshing close attention to detail and think more people should try this out. there are charts out there that specify how long you should expose certain film at different iso. google!
This is great, well explained, creatively resourceful and excellent attention to detail. they have charts for rules of thumb for how long to expose a pinhole camera for for what iso film. that's the tricky part i imagine...
you uncover your pinhole for a sec (time differs with lighting conditions and ISO) then cover it with tape again. Then wind the film and repeat. It will take some time to get the timing right.
I was also asked to clarify on how to take a picture: All you have to do is remove the piece of electrical tape that is covering the pinhole! If it's a sunny day then 1-3 seconds should suffice. If there is less light then leave the tape off longer. If you want your picture to be as sharp as possible put the camera on a stable surface so that it is still while the film is being exposed. After you tape the hole up, you wind the exposed film into the empty cannister with your key.

@iNate618 exposure times depend on the lighting around you/the camera and yep 35mm ^_^

You have to take a picture of something very bright, and then you have to hold the camera up viewing it for about four minutes.

do you put the key and twist in the empyt cartridge or new one?
sk8tingrox 3 years ago
You want to turn the key into the empty cartridge because by turning it you are pulling the film into it that has just been exposed.

use a rubber bad to keep it in place
fitimio001 3 years ago
I suspect the slipping sound is just the film loosening in the cannister, it's not actually slipping where you are making the exposure.

I just made one... the film I have has 24 exposures. Everytime I take a pic, do I have to turn the key 5 times to advance to the next shot?
