Sam Ulano

Sam was my drum teacher's (John Ferrante) teacher, also. I saw him at the Ed Shaughnessy clinic years ago (approx 1980). I have more than a dozen books by Sam. At the clinic he would read entire pages of drum notation in less than 10 seconds flat.

Sam played with my Father-in-law Ralph Pascell who still has his Buddy Rich Drums with skin covering. I would like to have him call him so they could reminisce about the old days. He has a picture of him when they were in the service together. My fatherinlaw turns 89 and has all his talents to this day.

I never met Sam but he is my drum teacher's teacher's teacher and has played with Sam Ulano. I hear stories all the time about Sam and Russ.

I met Sam back in the late 70's. His place was off 42nd. Street. In this clip his place is still a cluttered mess as it was then.

I studied with Sam Ulano. He is a great teacher and mentor, not to mention a character and beautiful personality. Sam is one of very few I've learnt from who are true teachers; a unique, caring, and incredibly generous person.
