  • Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against African-Americans. I love R&B, New Soul etc. for what it is, good US-American music. It is my favorite kind of music and always has been :)

  • And when I see that Ankh on her arm, I have to smile. Many black people all over the world have the tendendy to claim ancient Egypt for themselves, saying it was a black culture, just because Egypt is on the African continent. But Egyptians are and always have been more closely related to Eurasians then to black Africans.

  • how right you are

  • I was always under the impression that ancient Egypt was a melting pot of colors and looks. The hieroglyphics and the sculptures prove that.

  • The Egyptians were largely Mediterranean people, neither black African, nor European, but similar to Berbers and Arabs. There is an interesting article titled "Ancient Egyptian race controversy" on Wikipedia.

But of course there were also black Africans living in ancient Egypt, just like Indians, Europeans, Phoenicians, Sumerians etc. Egypt was a trading power, importing and exporting stuff from and to all kinds of places.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm sorry but wikipedia is not a good source for information. Anyway, it really doesn't matter anyway. The past is the past.

  • Well, sometimes it is a good source, like in this case. It does not say Egyptians were this or that, it only shows what a hot topic this is for some people with their own agendas. But there is other data such as haplogroups...

Anyway, we are getting a bit far away from this pleasant Texan music :D

  • Egyptians were Black...No such thing as Mediterranean people..That's just some Euro-Centric Concept to group people based on skin color which holds no value. In Ancient times it was about what NATION you were from...Your NATION was your family....Mizraim was the Father of the Egyptians, who was a Son of Ham...So theirs no way around the Fact that the Egyptians were Black..Just so you know, The Arabs were originally black. Ishmaelites.

  • Youtube is funnier than any of those conspiracy boards :D

  • Not to Mention that the name of Egypt was Kemet

Kemet means land of the blacks

  • @allinyadamnface2. Visit Egypt and learn the harsh truth about the fate of the Nubians at the hands of the Pharoahs and then you can preach about race and color.

  • ????

  • The first race who ever walk this earth was black.

  • there was no such thing as "race" when this world first came to be.

  • African-Americans are not at all like blacks in Brazil or Cuba. There people have maintained their mostly Yoruba traditions, they even still speak Yoruba to a certain extent and pray to Yoruba gods, whereas in the States blacks pray to the Jesus/the Semitic God/Allah and speak only English, just like all the other US-Americans.

  • If she said she was Yoruba-American, I would say ok. But thanks to the way slaves were treated in the US (families split, sold all over the continent etc.) she probably has no clue whether she is the equivalent of Italian-American, German-American, Russian-American etc.

  • well yes americans took it way too far...but in reality..from the start of slavery when it came to U.S. and africans...Africans sold themselves to the U.S...im sorry to say but they sold there own people..americans made it what it was tho...either way its a sad thing period

  • Yes, I guess there is no people in the world which does not have a skeleton in the closet :) Especially blacks, traditionally the victims of racism etc., are often portrayed as innocent victims when in reality they too have shown the same eventually racist behaviors that probably no people in the world is immune to under certain conditions.

  • The Asanti in Ghana for instance were feared by all their African neighbors, but also admired because they fought the British so hard.

  • Africans couldn't of sold themselves to the U.S because they didnt trade with the U.S. The rural African was traded to the Spaniards by urban Africans in exchange for weapons and rum.

  • The slaves today are traded by their own people - it is not nearly over

  • African-American is an odd term, it kind of assumes that Africa is one entity, where in reality Africans are more different from each other than Europeans are. And they have always fought each other, even sold each other as slaves to the Europeans.

  • She is US-American, she sees the world around her like other US-Americans such as Jay Leno, be it black or white or Asian. Real Africans would see the world she is living in totally differently from the way she or other US-Americans do. She probably does not even know where in Africa her remote ancestors were from.

  • And how could any of my statements be an insult to either side? That would require that both sides thought their own ethnic group was better than the other, in which case they would be nothing but racists.

  • I am a white European, but if you go back far enough, my ancestors were also from Africa, do I feel like I have an African heritage? No. Wherever you draw the line historically, it is an arbitrary line.

Maybe it would really help the US as a whole if everybody living there just forgot about that ethnic crap and accepted that they and their offspring will always be nothing but US-Americans and increasingly mixed.

  • Her culture is US-American, not African. Nor is her music African. She should go to Africa and she would realize that African music is completely different. She herself probably has white ancestors, like most African-Americans.

There have always been some African-Americans who visit Africa and are totally disappointed because there is no connection apart from skin color. To Africans African-Americans are as un-African as Caucasians.

  • is jay leno african u stupid peice of shit. i know 4 a fact erikah is black . jus to let u kno africans did nothing for black independence it was the negro nappy head who changed the world and is who everybodies trying 2 imulate hater, jay leno ain't black u fake ass pussy

  • You did not even understand my point. So, keep displaying your great communication skills...

  • Sometimes I think she is overdoing the African heritage thingy, except for her skin color she is as African as Jay Leno ^^

  • && i think you're overdoing it with the music mostly from the 70s and early 80s...

  • so people should just ignore their heritage? Heritage plays a part in who you are and how you perceive the world, so she should just ignore this significant part of herself. She's pride of her familial history. Few american discount that history, they always consider themselves something besides amercan (Italian-American) even though their family has been here for generation. If you want to forget where you came from that's your business, but don't assume that someone else feel the same as you.

  • Erykah Badu and Jay Leno don't have the same familial history, so to come out and say Jay is just as African as Erykah is insulting to both. You are degrading the concept of culture, and discounting Jay's familial ties as a Scothish, Italian and Erykah's African ties.

  • Why did you think I said except from her skin color? She is genetically related to Africans, among others, but culturally she is as little African as Jay Leno is. I just think it is ridiculous when African-Americans dream of some African motherland etc., idealizing it beyond recognition. Erykah is just a Texan to me, just like the Bushes.

  • Loved this period in music, where the true talent actually got played.

  • yeah, me too but some ppl think that its weird to like this period of time but i dont care

  • Gorgeous song, great lyrics...hmmm. I'll always love the nineties

  • The nineties were the best

It is so appealing to me and I really feel the love she has for the man she loves and ..he can't have her because she is someone elses girl! Life is so beautiful and painful at the same time. Keep singing Erykah, keep giving us songs we love!!!

  • Dang, I could almost cry listenin' to this vibe. Wish I could be back in the "90's lifetime", plus I feel the same way the song does about a friend, only the other way around. "See ya next lifetime, babe" : )

  • i love how different she is!!!! she has always been my inspiration!

  • this is such a soothing, relaxing song....very true!

  • I love this song because she says, "I know I'm a lot of woman but not enough to divide the pie." I'm glad she weren't cheating and dating 10 thousand other dudes at one time. She's just like, see ya' next life time.

  • If She Identifies With Africans, That's Her Business and No One Else's Which is Why The Right to Freedom of Expression is Prevalent Today. IF it is ever abolished, Then, & Only Then Will She be Forced to Identify as American ONLY. And Yes, it's Afro-Canadian. I'm From Canada So Familiarize Yourself Before You aim to be so Profound. It's Not That Serious, as No One Cared When Ms. Augilera Made a Spanish CD because Her dad is Spanish. Mind Your Business. She's Offering Her Music, Not Her Ancestry.

  • Erykah is from Texas! Lol She aint African!

  • love this song

  • We are all in one and one in all. There is, and NEVER has been, an entity separate from the whole. This includes what we call nature- the elements "outside" of humanity. Let's, however, be precise in the origin of all humankind. Africa. There's no such thing as America. Everywhere we walk, and everything we see, is Africa.

  • I believe that even if she African American, African or European, nothing will change...she will still be so the best in what she done! race is not a factor of talent!

  • What if she gets reincarnated as a white woman?

  • lmfao

  • Comment removed

  • lol

  • This remind m of my first luv!

  • love this

  • shes AMERICAN

born in AMERICA! i dont get this whole african amrtican thing. They dont say Euro-Americans, Or Canadian Americans, or Australian-Americans. Leave your ancestory out of it. If u were born in the USA, your AMERICAN! leave it at that....and oh yea, Badu you are the shit i love this woman

  • What do you think Caucasian means? Your labeled by a Mountain range Mount Caucasus. Lol thats funny not that Im laughing at you. But see this brings up a further point finna drop some knowledge. Its kinda like Black History month White people dont have to stress their Whiteness cuz it gets displayed everywhere there are no disparities. When I go to class I learn WHITE history but you know what they call it History. HAHA. Its cool man I love everybody but white people have to notice this shit.

  • i stress this to people all the time , and they never seem to get it !

    thank you :)

  • Shouldn't people identify how they want to? Who are we do label others?
