Preston tried to teach us this at his workshop earlier this month. We just couldn't get the rhythm right. We looked so stupid slapping randomly on our guitars ^^

Yes, the technique is rather cool, but trechnique is not everything. His pieces are soulless and with no melody (or, rather, melody, that would touch ME. This is just an opinion after all).

as preston stated today when i saw him he doesn't view the guitar as one instrument, he views it as a 'source of sound' and says 'why waste all of the percussive potential that an acoustic guitar has. his style is 'integrated percussive playing' as he calls it.

Oh sure, it's important when you are learning. When you know all the modes and can play your neck up and down with ease, you can give yourself permission to play with discordance. When you start playing for an audience with amplification, you'll also want to watch for the beats and acoustics in the auditorium ... there is much more to proficiency than tuning.
