Now I can enjoy three different plays. But still I like Doc's strong picking most. I'm a Japanese. Shamisen is a Japanese traditional instrument with three strings. Shamisen means three different tastes of strings. In comparison with usual ones there is another kind which
is bigger and strings are thick, called Futojamisen. I feel somethig common with Doc's guitar. I think the gauge Doc uses is heavier than others and feel so steady.
Thank you for every body who mentioned what he says.
I could never figure out what Doc Was Saying at 2:38. Sounds like "nothin wrong with old ???". My favorite fill is the run of high notes at 2:25. Is it Tony Rice?
The high-note fill at 2:25 is Tony Rice. At 2:38 Doc Watson says: "Take 'er on home Mr. Blake." I don't know where you're from, but "take 'er on home" is a Southern US colloquial speech pattern.
The first part of both songs are the same but Lost Indian's progression stays the same throughout. Cherokee Shuffle has a second part which chord progression is completely different. It goes I-IV-I-IVI-IV-I-vi-V-I.
this is definitely Doc (1st lead) and Tony takes the lead next, then Doc says "Play it Norm" and Norman takes it third.....to the best of my ability to tell them apart
This is probably my favorite guitar only jam I've ever heard. Gorgeous. As for the chords I see posted below, I think ya'll are getting at the right thing but it looks a bit confusing. Just to clarify for newer players here's what they are doing for rhythm in this particular version of lost indian.
You're right flatpikinguitar, Lost Indian is also from that compilation Tony Rice cd which originally came from the Norman Blake and Tony Rice 2 cd of 1990. Looks like that Martin D-28 guitar was originally owned by Clarence White and Tony acquired it in 1975.
this is brilliant! just discuvverd tony rice. this song reminds me of stan rogers watching the apples grow: watch?v=POlMKesby1g

Why don't you change the title to include Doc Watson? Isn't he playing and talking on this piece?

Didn't realize this also featured Doc. I guessed wrong when I suggested Norman started it out.

It means to wrap the tune up or to finish the tune. All three of these men are on my favorites list, each one a master in their own style.

ha ha ha.. It means end the song, Mr Blake.

doc says "pick it Norman". it's obvious.

I think he said "take it Norman" or "Take it Norm," but that was just what my ears heard.

Thank you! You're right, it should be. Many years ago, I
heard Doc's RECORDS again and again. In them, Doc said
"Take it, Merle!" frequently. So, I wanted to hear Doc said
so. But, appearently, you are right.
iwatatatsuya 2 years ago
rockhardcox mentioned Doc Watson on this track.
Doc says something like " Take it, Merle! " at 1:02.
Is this so? If it is, then Merle played in this.

One of the reasons this is so great is that the three styles complement and compliment each other, adding up to the best guitar picking ever heard.

They are all good pickers but for me doc is the best.
dwatsonfan56 2 years ago
Me again. On this version they don't go back to the Am a second time.
bluegrasscannuk 3 years ago
Thanks for the chords ATATMOS. If you don't mind my input - there is a quick move to F position chord after the Am.
So playing on the beat: CCCC,CCAmAm,FF,CC,CCAmAm,GGC
Then there is an earlier Blake version where he goes to a bridge starting in the F position.
I played this tune in our band for several years so it is familiar to me.
Hope you don't mind my input.
bluegrasscannuk 3 years ago
wow gotta learn this one :D
prutad1 3 years ago
One of my favorite tunes to flatpick. For those of you playing along at home the chord progression is:
D, Bm, D, A, D
repeated over and over. I usually play it capoed on the second fret and play out of the C position (so it's C, Am, C, G, C)
Happy Pickin'

This is the kind of thing that makes me think of the end of an era. The blues and flat picking legends of the 20th century are dying off.

Don't believe it. There are plenty of folks you've never heard of out there keeping this style alive. And they play just as hot as these stars.
