It's the same reason why the Anti-Defamation League didn't put "Jewish" in their name and Planned Parenthood didn't put "contraception" in theirs.

Oh I think Rachel is a little off on this.. the Human Rights Campaign doesn't have gay in their name because they are not just a gay rights group and they are trying to make a statement... they are trying to remove the association of special rights for gay people and instead bring people to realize that gay people's rights are the same as everyone else's rights they are all HUMAN RIGHTS.. the group named GLAAD is their for gay issues

Wow, this is probably the first time I've disagreed with anything Rachel Maddow's said. :) But c'mon, there's a good reason why HRC doesn't have "gay" in the name. It's the same reason why the Anti-Defamation League didn't put "Jewish" in their name and Planned Parenthood didn't put "contraception" in theirs.
HRC's been around since 1980, and though there were certainly major problems with the debate they hosted (I didn't even know about Thompson's girlfriend!), let's not pick on them too much.
