I really like this theme song. it sucked in later years when they played the first 10 seconds then went to more merllowmusic during the opening. they should've done what they did in syndication & played the short version
Being smart is glorified more now than it was 20 years ago. Look at old shows like Family Matters and Saved by the Bell - Urkel and Screech were considered nerds and they were smart. Zach, Slater, Eddie Winslow were the cool guys who got bad grades.
Nowaways, even on promiscuous shows like Gossip Girl, or 90210, the cool guys get good grades. Being smart is considered cool now - so in my opinion you have it backwards.
How was Dennis Blunden allowed sole access to the lone PC in the classroom? I'd have forklifted his fat ass out of the way so I could play some "Leisure Suit Larry" in all its 8-bit glory.

The only one who really turned out to be any good was John Travolta. I did see one of the Sweatglands on Super Password Plus. I think Mr Carter was the host too.
This show was SO awesome. What kind of world do we live in where drek like "Saved by the Bell" ends up on Greatest Show Ever lists all the time, but this show is forgotten, rarely aired in reruns and (often in the online stuff I've read) referred to as a really "stupid" show? Hello??
Aren't Dan "Dennis" Schneider and Brian "Eric" Robbins two of the men responsible for so many kid's shows on Nickelodeon? (Dan Schneider Productions-Drake and Josh, etc. and Tolin/Robbins Productions-All That, Keenan and Kel, The Amanda Show, etc.) If so, how great it is to see how they got there and no wonder they were able to get Dan "Arvid" Frischman!
dan schiender, brian robbins and dan frischman were in show which is ironic because dan schiender, dan frischman and brian robbin would soon work for nickelodeon
ya! where subway stations have thick smoke pouring out of 'em and kids randomly breakdance on the sidewalk when someone squirts a water hose at 'em! :D
It's kind of ironic that this show is the reverse of what "Welcome Back, Kotter" (also ABC and was also situated in NYC as well) was. On Kotter, the students were more of underachievers and rebellious tyrants. On "Head of the Class," the students are more of the overachievers and somewhat more balanced.
i grew up in nyc watching this show as a kid thinking that when i went to high school it would be the same for me. i went to a HS for advanced students and my four years were nothing like that show.
That is true it did make NYC "look" cool. Sadly Boston is the cool city with the cool accent! Bostonians are wicked pissers (look that up in your book of slang). GO SOX!
I forgot the what the intro was and it brings back memories. I miss the Johnny Fever mustache. Hate that Howard shaved it. Didn't the replace Howard near the end of the series?
Mooky: Howard Hesseman chose to leave the series after four years. For the fifth and final season, Billy Connolly taught the class. Hope that helps. :)
Lurrz: Thanks for posting this. Sure brings back memories. Krystyne Haje (the redhead) remains the love of my life!
I loved this show. It changed time slots more than once in the UK but fondly remember watching it at 15.00 when i got home from school. First time I've heard that tune in about 15 years. Thank You!
It's amazing how you can go 15 years without seeing something yet, the moment you see it again for the first time, know everything that about to happen about two seconds before it takes place. That's how this intro was for me. Thanks for posting!
God, that show sucked and I LOVED IT!!! The "Awesome '80s" freakin' ruled, man!; suspend belief in reality: If they were SO smart, why did it take them 5 years to finish high school???
Word that. Especially the episode where that young chick was all like haaaaaaaay, I see poltergeists! And shit starts flying around the room and I'm like, omg it's like Ghostbusters and Head of the Class had a beautiful baby together.
*swiftly dismembers mercyreef for saying the above evil, untrue and unnecessary statement in 2006 when he/she knows full well that he/she's not supposed to say, think, feel and believe both in 2006 and any other time*
That show did NOT suck but you suck, you uneducated, senseless puke drinker! That show ruled and it always will!
@mercyreef I believe their 4th season was supposed to be 1st semester of 12th grade and the 5th season was supposed to be the 2nd semester of 12th grade. Granted, none of them looked 14 or 15 when the series began, except the girl that played Janice, but she was like 10.
I LOVED this show. If it was on DVD, I would purchase it without hesitation. This intro rocks! Despite it only being 1 minute long, it really shows the personality of Mr. Moore aka Howard Hesseman. He was a very unorthodox educator but was successful thanks to his wit and charm. HOTC rules!
it DOES rule! of course i enjoyed the early seasons more, but I didn't even mind when that scottish dude took over. the theme is really great and a few years ago i was able to find a full three minute rendition of it which now lives on my iPod so i can rock out to it on the bus. i'm sure it will make its way onto DVD eventually. *crosses fingers*

It starts out medieval-sounding with the harpsichord and orchestral strings, then 20 seconds later goes to electric guitar, synths and synth drums.

Wow, a show that actually glorified being smart.
Such a show would never be created today. It just proves how much American culture has decline in 20 years.
