In a book when you read it, you cannot control the fate of any character.
That is the same with killer7. While you cannot understand why anyone likes this "game", I cannot understand what the problem is with this game. I guess I am not picky when it comes to controls?
While you put aside "the fact that NOBODY has any friggin' clue what the plot is about", may I be the first to inform you that the games plot is, has and always will be up to interpretation.
Let's put aside the weird imagery and the fact that NOBODY has any friggin' clue what the plot is about and consider the game mechanics - you press a button to run, you have no control of direction but you can change path at certain intervals, the boss battles can sometimes boil down to trial and error... I genuinely can't understand why anyone likes this 'game'. It's the electronic equivalent of one of those "Choose Your Own Adventure" books they used to make.
How much real control of direction do you think you have in other games, even the completely "sandbox" style games? If you're allowed to go into every doorway but 90% of the doorways lead to nothing interesting and nothing that effects the game outcome is that freedom and exploration or just fluff padding and artificial extension of game length via busywork.
@halidefox Think about it this way:

On gamefaqs you'll find a looong story faq. It's very complicated, tough.
