Its true Mormons do not worship Moroni, and they will claim not to worship Joseph Smith, yet they choose to sanitize and polish his character and that of Brigham young. As for Joseph Smith, Mormons have a hymn called, "Praise to the Man", they put JESUS CHRIST as a bold font on the front of their churches, but their attention to Joseph is KNOWN the world over, want a real look to TRUE Mormonism research the FLDS, these are much more in line with the teachings of Joseph Smith

I understand the sun reflection could have distracted pilots flying over the temple (Gatwick flight path) so permission was not granted. Unless anyone knows otherwise.

As I understand it, it was something in the original design.  If you have access to pictures of the Temple before it's refurb in the early nineties you will see the spire was different. Perhaps with a change in technology 50 years after its construction, the refurbishment in 1992 and what appears to be a trend to add the Angel Moroni rather than leave him out (note other temples left out, such as Hawaii, Frankfurt, Bern...) they changed their minds - though this is just personal conjecture.

I too heard the "don't distract the pilot on landing" story as Kilapi58 but that was as an explanation for why the spire was so dull and not illuminated. Not sure what the reason was for no angel the first time round.

Yes. If they just built the tower round the statue or carefully placed it up there using a small device on the scaffolding that would be boring. But with an eye to public relations they have to put on a dramatic show. Never mind the ammount of fuel wasted putting the angel up there.

Thanks for posting this. I had no idea this event was taking place and it just makes me so grateful that with millions of £££s in unspent Humanitarian Aid and Fast Offering sat in the Church's HSBC account, we somehow managed to find the money to put a statue on top of the London (or is that Lingfield?) Temple.

I don't know what 'significance' this holds for philrawlinson1948 or in what way Moroni (or Nephi) is the LDS 'Star of David' but i doubt it will make any impact on the nation.

The church doesn't use HSBC, its with JPMorgan Chase, and how do you know how much money it has?

Perhaps where you are it does, but here in the UK (where the new angel Moroni resides) the church banks with HSBC. And i know how much money the church has because as a registered charity it is obliged to submit annual financial reports to the Charities Commission.

Check it out online, the Church has 2 main registration numbers, 242451 and 274605.

Perhaps to clarify - you're both right. Missionaries all over the world are funded through one sole bank, JP Morgan Chase. However, the Church uses national banks (as opposed to international banks) for each country it is in. For example when I was in France, the Church banked with LCL (Le Credit Lyonnais).
