There was nothing else that sounded remotely like TD back then - I couldn't get enough. I bought every album, some I wore out and had to buy 2nd and 3rd copies. Soon after I heard Klaus Schulze on another late night radio show... I still look forward to his new releases. TD, not so much now - There is now and then a good to great track but I miss the days where I knew the whole album would fly my to another world without having to pre-listen first.
Over here in California, we weren't exposed to a lot of what was apparently commonplace in Germany at the time... Kraftwerk's Autobahn got radio play but was treated like a novelty record by most radio stations... then one night i was up after midnight painting and the DJ was playing a lot of darker prog, Pink Floyd and then he faded up Phaedra - I was transfixed! I loved TD right up until Chris Franke left in the mid 80s. After that, the music lost something it never reacquired, IMO.
Its always fun, seeing them, performing live and doing some improvisation on the equipment of yesterday,a science and philosophy based music, that trasponded that idees very well!
I really liked Tangerine Dream up to and including Rubycon. Post Rubycon I feel they ceased to be as innovative. Edgar Froese's guitar playing I also found did not always fit well for me. Its great watching this though. I saw them live around this time, at the Corn Exchange in Cambridge. An hypnotic experience. I had not heard a purely improvised performance before and did not realise it was possible. They opened my ears to so much in music!
Ricochet was TD´s peak, after this they were on the wane of expression. Still Ricochet + Rubicon are relatively master works, many bands could not say to have had so much influence. Sometimes tracks like "Interferon" (Thomas Leer/Robert Rental - The Bridge LP) exceed the aura of TD.
@willypotts o_O hello TD created things.. the Gods of Techno or Electronic music (they hate that) but it's true, even Rammstein lists them and an influence :P this requires playing thru a stereo :P
I was there in this concert and it was the second time i saw them performing. The first was in 74 in london again and at the time i didn't know them at all. A friend suggested that we should go so we went... such music i had never experienced before... quadrophonic sound accompanied by video animation, it really blew my head ! Later on, i bought PHAEDRA and RUBYCON and realised that what they played live was improvisation based on these.
nice,... I saw them in the Washington DC area back in 1975/76. On the double live album that was released shortly thereafter you can ever so briefly hear "Professor Motta" from WGTB introduce them, so at least one track is from that show....no one does it like TD!!!
Never came across these images from that early period, interesting the music is nearly as good as some of their studio records of that time. the video is very good quality, the only weird as usual I found out from these times, is that you see them rarely play synchro, it's like different music with different moves. Good rare video, though
I remember seeing them in Bristol round about this time. They came on, played a piece for half-hour went of for ten minutes, came back, played another song for half-hour, went off and came back for a 30 minute encore. Amazing...
I have the bootleg box set which has the 2 CD albert Hall 1976 recording on, this must have been missed off it, thanks for posting, I really love the Sequenced bass notes and thats what made TD very unique in the 70's

1976:
Baumann, yes.
Schmoelling, no (not until 1980).
Franke, yes.
Schulze, no (left in 1970).

The period with Baumann, Schmoelling Franke, and Schulze are by far their most focused and inventive.

Do you really believe Tangerine Dream are "proud" of having Rammstein among their fans ?
Too many mushrooms eaten ?

Thank you for posting this! TD fans have heard so much over the years but those more interested do not get enough chance to SEE what they do.
They are organic masters of their electronic instruments.
