Hey RenzeZielman if you want to muck your yards out every few days then go ahead i will just carry on doing my yards every 6 to 8 weeks like most folks do! At last we have finally got rid of our shit Tomahawk and got a Spread a Bale which is fantastic!! I will try and get a video uploaded on here soon!!
hey guys, in what type of barns do you use 30% more straw with a chopper ?
In barns that are cleaned every few days, it should save straw because the chopped straw better takes up the moisture. But in barns that are cleaned only in the spring, and new bedding applied every few days, the cattle tramples the short straw into the muck below and it gets messy, long straw gives better floatation.
........... and the spread a bale is at least 3 times quicker but tomahawk was already bought and dealer wouldnt swap machines so we are stuck with the tomahawk!!!and as you can probably guess im not its biggest fan!!
1066gull i agree we use a tomahawk 8080s and also use 30-40% MORE STRAW!! Demoed it and boss bought straight away cus he thought it saved time and staw but next DAY yards were twice as mucky even though straw was really good and long it was chopped really fine!! This machine is not a spreader its a chopper and anyone thinkihg of buying a tomahawk DONT BOTHER!! We tried a spread a bale a week later and it was awsome alot less dust ,noise and fuel, straw was spread and not chopped cattle were clean
is it worth it tho like 30% saved straw compered to the cost of the machine? maybe it would be worth it but it looks like very dusty straw that would make for bad bedding.
Did anyone mention farmers lung ?

They make a massive mess...better doing it by hand....we tried it with the machine, it didnt even spread it propaly

Doing it by hand is fine when you only have a small indoor heard, or 100 beef cattle.
I work on a 1200 milker and 400 beef unit, i tell you these spreaders are worth every penny!
Granted, this is not the best example of one.
