phil has purposfully changed lyrics and verses... ala bird song... when the second verse he changes she to he to mean (jerry) his friend he lost. All I know is something like a bird within HIM sing. second verse phil style. Stare you up makes more sense even though we all know its is anthologized as scare. Im gonna stare u down and stare u up. Similar to upside out inside down for so long the only game in town.

I say Joan Osborne is a MUCH stronger concert singer than Donna Jean Godchaux ever was with The Dead. Donna could pull it off in the studio, but her voice was often weak and off key live. I've wondered if the guys didn't object to this much, because a weak backup singer like Donna wouldn't overshadow Jerry's and others' singing. A strong voice like Joan's could have easily overpowered the others, throwing The Dead's sound off balance.

Still, I wish Donna had at least sung on key more often!
