One cannot criticise Paoli. Perhaps it is Nationalism or some macho sexual thing - or both. Many, many modern day critics think his singing crude, almost laughable, whilst understanding his success. Paoli has poor intonation, a crude provincial style; his supporters worship him - it is pointless to put such thoughts to paper. The Wikipedia entry is locked, controlled by the Paoli worshippers - it is all very odd. There is no doubt that Paoli was admired and had a successful career; but why?

Paoli is crude (most critics say so), his pitch is often faulty but there is no doubt that he had an impressive voice. That is the general opinion - not mine.
When Paoli first recorded, (for the Gramophone in London) during the 1900s, his voice high pitch damaged the recording machine. After testing few times the engineers found out that his voice could only be recorded at 20 feet away from the cylinder, so that it would not damage the sensitive recording device, while most normal singers in those days, (including Caruso) sang right close to the recording cylinder without causing any damage to the equipment.
true, but according to Tito Schipa, the Caruso we heard on record was not the Caruso he heard live in the Met. According to him, he changed his voice to work with the primitive equipment. Make no mistake, Caruso's was a huge voice according to all accounts. Its actually a very interesting point you make here, though. El Met le ofreció un contrato en el 1900 pero el lo rechazó. For my taste, he was the greatest OTELLO ever. His power and passion are unparalleled. He deserves to be much better known, especially to American opera lovers. Although his recordings are early, their sound quality is excellent...and have a "forward" sound.
Phenomenal! The three tenors may have been rich and world famous, but their voices had nothing on Paoli, Caruso and Lanza. My heart aches when they sing "vesti la guibba"

Antonio Paoli was the main cause why Enrico Caruso had to flee Europe... Caruso was short, Paoli was tall, giving him much greater presence in a live stage, Paoli also had greater charisma with royalty than Caruso. Enrico became more famous because when he went to America the record player was a more common modality there than in Europe. Still Paoli managed to record the first complete opera.

What a find! Given the quality of recording technology back then- this voice was immense. Today he'd have to be at least four feet back from ANY microphone. Yowza.

@GerardoRosvaenge Mil gracias por exponer el arte de Paoli. Nacio y vivio en una epoca especifica y llena de cambios sociales y politicos, Su orgullo de ser Boricua lo llevaba siempre en su corazon. Durante 6 meses PR obtuvo por voto bicameral completa Autonomia, igual que cuaquier Provincia Espanola, con derecho a voz y voto(1898), Paoli fue un hombre en la historia y asumio su rol con valentia y honor. Fue becado gracias a su hna, Amalia por la Reina Cristina De Hapsburgo,

You should listen to the duet "Al suon dell'arpe angeliche" from Donizetti's opera Poliuto, spectacularly sung by Paoli and a soprano called Honoria Popovic.
Una voz increible. Hay un disco del 1907 de la opera I pagliacci entera con Paoli, Huguet, y Cigada dirigida por el autor.

For my taste, he was the greatest OTELLO ever. His power and passion are unparalleled. He deserves to be much better known, especially to American opera lovers. Although his recordings are early, their sound quality is excellent...and have a "forward" sound.

Phenomenal! The three tenors may have been rich and world famous, but their voices had nothing on Paoli, Caruso and Lanza. My heart aches when they sing "vesti la guibba"
