Though the Mustang was deffinitely a superb interceptor, with outstanding performances at high altitude and blah-blah-blah-blah, its success to winning the war over Europe, and even over the Pacific, should be shared with the P-47, the P-38 and the Spitfire. To my view, THE WWII N.1 US fighter when it comes to contribution to winning the war will always the F6F Hellcat. Besides, when it comes to resistence, the P-51 was almost like a cardboard plane compared even with the Curtiss P-40...

The P38 was the better fighter but the P51 was the better aerobatically. That's why it made a better escort for the bombers. The P38 had a much higher climb rate and a 2,000 foot higher ceiling. The P38 was a more difficult and expensive plane to fly though, two engines vs one. On patrol, you'd go to your ceiling and look for the enemy. The P38 couldn't be jumped by ANY PLANE. The problem was that someone in the ETO didn't like the P38 and withheld training from the pilots. That's why the

As far as posted speeds, the P-51D had only a 5 mph advantage over the P-47, while the FW-190-D Dora was almost the same. Level recorded speed comparison though is one thing, fighter aircraft flown by well trained and experienced combat pilots is something else. The 1st propeller fighter aircraft to break 400mph in level flight, was the Chance-Vought F4U Corsair.

Correct. In level flight, max speed was about 440mph @ about 20,000ft. In a dive, it's not uncommon for them to get up there to about mach 0.8 (about 600mph).
