I have been unwrapping 'snakes and arrows' like a present, song by song. I've been a Rush fan for more than 20 yrs, and if I'm not mistaken, this is some of their finest work. You are mistaken. No way Geddy or Alex have this kind of poetry in them. If I'm not mistaken Geddy has not written a song for rush lyrically since the 70s. Awesome song. Yeah the whoas are a touch much but not enough to destroy the beautiful arpeggios and sheer power of the verse.
If I'm not mistaken, Geddy and Alex wrote this one, NOT Neil. And besides, how is it hippie crap? This is one of my favourite, if not my favourite song, from their Snakes And Arrows album. Rush forever!

I've pointed out that Neil's lyrics for this album work better as poetry to be read then as songs to be recorded. Way too wordy, preachy and self-indulgant. 'Hemispheres' was wordy and self-indulgant, but it was still powerful and fun to listen to. Not a whiney snoozefest like this, you know?

Yeeeeccchhh...this isn't the Rush I've loved over the years, it's some sort of boring drivel written by a bleeding heart 15 year old. Everything that Rush does (or did) that moved and excited me is nowhere to be found on this song or most of the album. B-O-R-I-N-G!
I respect that they're older and things have happened...it's just that I find the music they wrote to go with the lyrics this time around is boring and mundane, which is something that they can be rarely accused of. Plus, Neils lyrics are too wordy and unorganized..most of the the songs here just read like a long rant instead of proper "verse/chorus/verse/bridge/chorus" etc etc
Great song, very sad though. I didn't even know who did this song, thought it was Rush bc it sounded like them. Had a bad night a few weeks back, got in a drunken shouting match with ex-girl and she left and woulnd't return calls, havn't spoken to her since. Had this song playing in my head all night so I had to look it up and yes, it is indeed Rush.
This song hasn't gotten old in 3 months. S&A is not a revolutionary Rush album but in its way it is a masterpiece and absolutely a "beacon in the night" of music right now. I don't think Rush has ever recorded an album so understated or confident. It doesn't sound like an ending, and it should be a beginning.
Great choice in songs bro. This one was one of those songs that at first I dont like/get the song, but then it one day just sounds bad ass and thats it. Then again, that is how most Rush songs are for me, I get hasty to hear their new shit, and for some reason I wish to hear the older Rush in the new stuff, but I listen to the new stuff and it begins to click after a few listens and it is the best Rush ever!
Old Doctor Bojay's gonna "light up a bowl" and kick back and listen to some Snakes and Arrows. This one happens to be his fave. In honor of it, I'm going to fire up a "larger bowl" than usual.
If there's an "official" video for this, I hope it's not too soppy or sentimental, because the song avoids that while driving home its powerful message without cliche.
why such diferent fortunes and spiining thoughts, sirs, when , Obviously, seem to see, sucks to seem. May you never need to seem. Something so badly arranged.Ged knows better. put out the folding chairs.
"Let be be finale of seem / The only emperor is the Emperor of Ice Cream." --Wallace Stevens. "The possible dream, finale of seem ..." --They Might Be Giants. The only ePhilosopher is the ePhilosopher held in high esteem. The only doctor is Bojay Gupta, breast exam and vaginal gamut complaint healer extraoirdinaire.
You must understand that Neil has been through a lot of pain. He is, I hope, asking some hard questions about the meaning of life. This seems to be reflected in the post-trauma lyrics. (ie - One Little Victory, for instance )
I find it ironic that he is focussing on the spiritual questions - but is respectful about his atheistic position. I pray for these guys - that they will come to know the truth.
If we're so much the same like I always hear Why such different fortunes and fates? Some of us live in a cloud of fear Some live behind iron gates Why such different fortunes and fates? Some are blessed and some are cursed Some live behind iron gates While others see only the worst Some are blessed and some are cursed The golden one or scarred from birth While others only see the worst Such a lot of pain on the earth
The golden one or scarred from birth Somethings can never be changed Such a lot of pain on this earth It's somehow so badly arranged Somethings can never be changed Some reasons will never come clear It's somehow so badly arranged If we're so much the same like I always hear Some are blessed and some are cursed The golden one or scarred from birth While others only see the worst Such a lot of pain on the earth
Peart is asking us to consider whether faith is relevant in a world seemingly ruled by chance. The last line circles back around wryly to Peart's own compassionate elitism.
Why such different fortunes and fates? Gee, I don't know??!! In the USA poverty is generally a self-inflicted condition. Get off your asses and change your fate! Keep your pecker in your pants or your legs tightly closed. Work hard. Don't complain. Don't look to government. Pray.
I love this song! The style it is written in, a pantoum, is so awesome! how the first line of a verse is the second line of the verse before it, and how the first line and last line are the same (not counting the chorus, of course, to make it a song it is a bit different, but its written like that). Love it! great message!
Infact i defy anyone to name a band with a better body of work, the stones & AC,DC have been around a while but there is no comparison musically, U2 overated! GnR now a joke, only Led Zep, Aerosmith, Floyd, VH come close
Great song from a legendary band, apart from Van Halen what band is there right now with that kinda history & respect on a worldwide basis? count every new Rush album as a blessing cos too many great bands don't make it that far & they're still here! all the more power to them
everyone just shut up, a musician wants to write a song about how he views the world and you all sound like you are offended. ther are plenty of tracks on this album that have deeper meanings so quit complaining.
finally someone else is spreading the message...ive been telling a shitload of people the exact same thing. the whole album is about losing faith or questioning life itself
Dudes - ePhilospher is a bot, generating gibberish from an ngram model. If I had to guess, I'd say it's trained on philosophy and poetry texts, interpolated to the content of clustered discussions (hence "dear anthem records") that you find here. Know what I'm sayin?
Anyway, the pantoum construction of The Larger Bowl is a tight little tour de force on Neil's part. When I first read it and saw how it interleaved and rolled back on itself in perfect completion - I couldn't help but smile at his cleverness and skill. And awed by pulling it off.
"If we're so much the same, like I always hear" ... I love the way Neil takes common, bland, patently false expressions that are uttered unthinkingly by millions as unquestionable truths, flips it inside out, makes a song of it, and turns out a fresh perspective for your enjoyment and contemplation. So no, erock33, it's not lame at all.
Like this? You don't reply to the video itself, but rather reply to a comment. You'll notice each comment has a little blue 'Reply' link, that is the key my friend, that is the key.
I look at lyrics from all previous albums, including VT, and this one is just lame lyrically compared to the rest. I am a fan but this album just doesn't do anything for me other than depress. In fact, if you are diagnosed with depression I would recommend skipping this album it might push you over the edge.
dear anthem records, way way back when hey rocked. our far flung iron gates make no sense post-katrina. something is as flowing as the water, ebb, worst curves. Love, Bong
You'll notice he (or... it?) used the word 'Bong' in there, so I think we can do some resonable assumptions to figure out what, exactly, this fool has been smoking. He's not smoking salmon, I'm tellin' ya right now.
Write Neal Peart a letter, tell him to smarten up. Oh yeah, dont mention the fact that him and the guys have brought you tons of happiness over 30+ years. Great F'N song you slappy bastard.
I'm really kind of disappointed with this track. There is almost no sarcasn or deeper analysis... just a kind of lame "life sucks sometimes" feeling. He even gets close to contradicting freewill... disturbing.

I wish Willie Nelson would do a cover of this song.

The most beautiful song I've heard in the last 20 years! It should play on a celestial music box!
Starnado 4 years ago 2
This song hasn't gotten old in 3 months. S&A is not a revolutionary Rush album but in its way it is a masterpiece and absolutely a "beacon in the night" of music right now. I don't think Rush has ever recorded an album so understated or confident. It doesn't sound like an ending, and it should be a beginning.
DrBojayHookah 4 years ago 3

You bet.
What a great song.

I love this song.

See you in Seattle.

Pray.

This is the new single from the album. They are also sending it to rock, adult contemp., and COUNTRY stations!? Yeah I know! I think it's awesome.

I thought Far Cry was the single from this album
MrM00000 4 years ago
It is... There's 3 singles. "Far Cry," "Spindrift" and this one.
Codackussell 4 years ago
I love this song! The style it is written in, a pantoum, is so awesome! how the first line of a verse is the second line of the verse before it, and how the first line and last line are the same (not counting the chorus, of course, to make it a song it is a bit different, but its written like that). Love it! great message!

Infact i defy anyone to name a band with a better body of work, the stones & AC,DC have been around a while but there is no comparison musically, U2 overated! GnR now a joke, only Led Zep, Aerosmith, Floyd, VH come close
ludwig9 4 years ago
Great song from a legendary band, apart from Van Halen what band is there right now with that kinda history & respect on a worldwide basis? count every new Rush album as a blessing cos too many great bands don't make it that far & they're still here! all the more power to them
ludwig9 4 years ago
i like armor and sword the best. this ones a little too depressing and acoustic, although the only legitimate solo in the album is nice.
grandmaos 4 years ago
everyone just shut up, a musician wants to write a song about how he views the world and you all sound like you are offended. ther are plenty of tracks on this album that have deeper meanings so quit complaining.
belppp 4 years ago
All you guys are dumbasses. Neils wife and daughter just died, his lyrics for every song are going to reflect that.
PS this is one of the better songs of the album (they all are)
jas930 4 years ago
finally someone else is spreading the message...ive been telling a shitload of people the exact same thing. the whole album is about losing faith or questioning life itself

Dudes - ePhilospher is a bot, generating gibberish from an ngram model. If I had to guess, I'd say it's trained on philosophy and poetry texts, interpolated to the content of clustered discussions (hence "dear anthem records") that you find here. Know what I'm sayin?
jmk65june 4 years ago
Anyway, the pantoum construction of The Larger Bowl is a tight little tour de force on Neil's part. When I first read it and saw how it interleaved and rolled back on itself in perfect completion - I couldn't help but smile at his cleverness and skill. And awed by pulling it off.
jmk65june 4 years ago
"If we're so much the same, like I always hear" ... I love the way Neil takes common, bland, patently false expressions that are uttered unthinkingly by millions as unquestionable truths, flips it inside out, makes a song of it, and turns out a fresh perspective for your enjoyment and contemplation. So no, erock33, it's not lame at all.
P.S. How does one get indented comments?
jmk65june 4 years ago

Love, Bong

ronnie4631 4 years ago
You'll notice he (or... it?) used the word 'Bong' in there, so I think we can do some resonable assumptions to figure out what, exactly, this fool has been smoking. He's not smoking salmon, I'm tellin' ya right now.

Write Neal Peart a letter, tell him to smarten up. Oh yeah, dont mention the fact that him and the guys have brought you tons of happiness over 30+ years. Great F'N song you slappy bastard.
ericthezebra 4 years ago
I'm really kind of disappointed with this track. There is almost no sarcasn or deeper analysis... just a kind of lame "life sucks sometimes" feeling. He even gets close to contradicting freewill... disturbing.
