It's a computer speaking typed words. I'm not (and never have been) diagnosed as "retarded", but I am referred to that way pretty often by just random people, sometimes also by medical professionals who haven't seen me type (a certain ultrasound tech comes to mind, who described my cognitive abilities as "infantile" when dictating results to someone), but as a diagnosis. This video was mostly addressing the way ordinary laypeople use the word, and YouTubers in particular.
I am a teacher working with non-verbal pre-school aged students with ASD. You have opened my eyes. Please share how you learned to type and any advise you would give to someone trying to teach "neuro-typical" communication to non-verbal kids with ASD. I'm an active member of Best Buddies and I have 2 best friends in The Center Serving Persons with Mental Retardation (The place is usually just referred to as The Center, since "Retardation" has developed a derogatory connotation). Amanda, I find your thoughts incredibly insightful...as an ex-aspie with a developmentally delayed sister, I'm always contemplating the types of issues you raise, and I wholeheartedly agree with your points of view on them.
I find that society is so quick to generalize and categorize and segregate...it seems to neglect the value of personhood, a thing that "non-judged" people seem to take for granted...

I think she types it into her machine and the processor translates it into speech.
Looks like for this video, she's typed in long messages beforehand and is replaying it for us as she videotapes herself.
Too bad the machine can't speak in a nicer voice.

Although I have no immediately recognizable or categorized disability, the manner in which I interract with family and friends (and indeed life itself) has always been, well, less than conventional. I can in some way relate to some things here, I have (mild) Asperger and basically don't have social or friend making skills that others take for granted, and can be slow at learning some things but very fast in others. Some losers have decided I must be "retarded" therefore but they are shallow people who don't give any consideration or thought to anything but themselves usually.

Hear hear! I have a brain-damaged co-worker and thinking of her accident sometimes makes her angry. This frightens people. She and I became friends when she was in a pissy mood and I asked her questions and learned her story. Now, when she's upset we talk. I would do this for anyone. Others are still afraid of her. Sure she's different, but she's got a lot to say and a great sense of humour. Sometimes, like the rest of us, she just needs to say things out loud. Thanks. You write beautifully!

The "norm" is overrated. If everyone thought the same there wouldn't be any progress in the world. And it's odd how some people over simplify other people by putting labels on them. I guess it's a way to save the time of not having to actually get to know someone. This video is very eye opening in that it helps communicate that a person is more than just a label. Good video. I wish you the best of luck in your life. I'm an active member of Best Buddies and I have 2 best friends in The Center Serving Persons with Mental Retardation (The place is usually just referred to as The Center, since "Retardation" has developed a derogatory connotation). They're much nicer, and in a sense more human, than many people I know. I highly recommend that others to actually make friends with someone who has few friends because of a label society gives them.
