"Special Effects are just a tool. A means of telling a story. People tend to confuse them as the end itself." - George Lucas. It's so sad to read this quote, and then look at him now.
1st 3 Star Wars (last 3) were good, the rest were utter shit, they would have made better cartoons than actual movies considering the amount of CGI in them. The scripts were shit, the acting was shit. Nuff said.
People comparing digital and film are retarded. These are two very different mediums. One exists. one doesn't. Digital is irrelevant to human beings as we are analog beings. We can not interpret a digital file without a machine. So what is the point. Cinema, culture and the arts has been cheapened greatly by this apparent 'digital revolution'.
All your 5K, Red, 1080p etc etc.... are going to be obsolete in 10 years. So get over it.
How about: George Lucas on meatball fucking heroes. That'd be more interesting than hearing this guy voice his opinion on anything having to do with filmmaking.
Has anyone closely looked at a single frame of 35mm projected on a theater screen. It's horrible quality. The only way you muddle past the bad quality is through the constant stream off images at 24fps. True Imax film, on the other hand, is exceptional. It's the difference between 35mm and medium format. Digital overcomes the bad quality of 35mm, but not Imax.
Ironically, this "genius" shot Attack of the Clones with a Sony CineAlta 24p camera that possessed a finite resolution of precisely 1080 lines of resolution... easily one-fourth of the resolution of 35mm films made, literally, as far back as nearly 100 years earlier. You go, George!
@pH4nTomPL4n3T Yeah, but that's only taking into consideration the original negative. The actual prints that theaters get is much lower.
I don't think it's really fair to call GL short-sighted for shooting it in only 1080. It's not like the super-duper 5K Red Epic was around in 2001. He was trying something very very new back then and that was to make HD video hold up on the big screen. Successfully, I might add.
The three major manufacturers of motion picture film cameras — Aaton, ARRI and Panavision — have all ceased production of new cameras within the last year and will only make digital movie cameras from now on. Cinema as we once knew it is dead. And you are listening to the man that is most responsible.
"So this is how film dies... with thunderous applause."
I've seen tumbleweed with more talent than this fatass. Star Wars was so much better when he didn't direct, and when he was under the control of the studios who wouldn't let him get away with his egregious nonsense.
He also was researching for non-linear editing back in the 80's. I think his team developed on of the first non-linear editors: the Android, or something like that. Now, almost every film is edited non-linear.
I commend this man for pushing forward movie-making technology - particularly for the benefit of low budget independents. However, I think he wrongfully martyred his beloved Star Wars franchise purely to push forward his technological agenda rather than his artistic vision. And while I appreciate the benefits of digital filmmaking, I wish that the embracing of one medium didn't spell the obsolescence of another.
I like look of the Sony HD digital CineAlta used on Star Wars episode II and III over Panavision Genesis that has been used on Collateral, Mimi Vice, Public Enemies, 2012 it looks horrible like some cheap TV show. The Sony is right on the money.
@EmpireLS56KW The only film you mentioned that was actually shot on the genesis was 2012, Public Enemies was shot on Sony f23 as well as some other sony cameras Collateral was a combination of Viper and sony gear, Miami vice is the same thing.
The look is created by choice by the filmmaker when they shoot it.
@rivercraig Well I just dislike the photograph on those films it looks like video! Where Star Wars episode II and III looked like film even thou it was video it looked like film.
I love George and how he has constantly and consistently improved Cinema His Legacy will surely be Star Wars but in actual fact he has changed Cinema and continus to change it for the better
@ninelivecat This. While I cringe when I see his newer productions, he has done so much to advance low budget filming that is impossible to dismiss him.
@ickyzorro He is like the Kraftwerk of Cinema he will create what ever technology he needs to make his art At the same time letting other people use his technology too.
@ninelivecat lol his legacy, his legacy includes re-releasing the same movie 89 times while his bank account gets bigger and bigger. if there ever was a sellout in film, goerge lucas takes the crown by a long shot. anyone who calls this man an artist has their head up their ass. YOU KNOW I AM RIGHT. he made one good film, ONE SINGLE FILM. he didn't even direct the others, and the prequels he did direct were horseshit. COME ON DEFEND HIM, if thats possible.
@ninelivecat absolutely nothing monumental. but here is the thing, i have done nothing and i am rightfully not called a legend or touted to have a legacy. i am a simple guy with a simple job living life. but noone gives UNDESERVED praise of having a legacy. see the difference? lucas hasn't done shit, He got lucky with star wars, it was a complete fluke, no way in hell someone with talent made phanthom menace. NO WAY. lucas is a greedy fat bussinessman, nothing more. all his fanbois should stop.
@tvmessiah mozart was a beautiful artist, george lucas is man who has billions of dollars and choses to spend it on ruinings an art form and buying bland trainers

@malows1234 well he directed American Graffiti which was a big hit, and if it wasn't for his special effects company movies like Jurassic Park wouldn't have been as good. oh and he helped Create Indiana Jones!
The precuels where bad, acting and story, there was no soul in them, and dont let me start on the fucking midiclorians.

Star Wars was good back when they were forced to use their creativity to make the magic happen. Nowadays you just need a big render farm.
