I'm tempted on taking apart my GTX 280 in order to properly clean out the dust inside, my computer gets dusty fairly quick, with fear 3 (known to make some cards overheat) my gpu peaks at 83°C (with the ADT7473 sensor) and the pcb at 67°C (same sensor) btw 26-27°C ambient now. Should i attempt to clean my GTX 280 or the temps are good? If i open it, do i need to clean and put back thermal paste everywhere it's needed? Or just reassembly the card like a barbarian without using new thermal paste?
Hey I took apart my gtx 280....put on some arctic silver 5.....reassembled the card and the temps shot through the roof....like 115 degrees as compared to 80 degrees before...does anyone have any ideas on what I have screwed up?
@nitroxide17 You probably screwed up putting the heatsink on properly. A small gap between the GPU and its heatsink will skyrocket temps. Also, your layer of Arctic Silver might be too thick (it should be a paper-thin layer).
Finally, some cards have proprietary thermal pastes or pads that are designed for the card in mind. Putting a common paste like Arctic Silver (which is still good so I think you messed up on the application part) could increase temperatures.
thats not true lol 1 gtx 280 is slitghtly less powerful then the gx2..however 3 gtx 280s are better then 2 9800 gx2s ..also if ur playing a game that is not sli enabled ..1 gtx 280 is better then a gx2 because the 280 has one awsome gpu..whereas a gx2 has 2 lol so it only uses one gpu on non sli games lol ohpe tht didnt confuse you..but to answer your question..280 tri sli is better then quad
its like einsteins law for speed the faster you go the more fuel is required until you will need an infinite amount of fuel. this plays the same way with the number of transistors the more you want the performance to increase the more and more transistors you will need thus reaching an infinite amount meaning we will need to discover newer architectures that utilize more power from fewer transistors. this isn't solved by adding more cores or GPU's because the bandwidth between an SLI or a cross-
im gonna wait for the next gpu.. might be a GX2 280 o.0 that will be some power and think about it the 280 has 1 core the 9800 GX2 has 2 cores so thats a huge increase seein the 280 has 1 core and a huge one at that so if they bring out a GX2 280 ill be waitin and put 2 GX2 280s if they come out with em or maybe even 3 if they allow 3 way sli with the cards unlike they did with the 9800 GX2
the problem is that the new drivers had not been released . Now at the moment befor ethe new drivers came out it uses geforce 9 series drivers that had not been maded for GT200 chip.
the gx2 only beats it by a couple frames and that's not much for a duel gpu card.the gtx 280 is just a single gpu and has as much raw power as a gx2 so imagine 3 running at once or even 2 in sli.if you wonder too crysis is finally playable at a 2560x1600 resolution on very high settings with just 2 of the gtx 280's running and a qaud gx2 can't pull off playable frames at that resolution and yes the driver is new i bet when new drivers comes out it'll smoke the gx2 out of comission
STMUN 9800GX2 is slightly better than the GTX 280 but it is more expensive than the 9800GX2. My opinion is wait for the drivers for the GTX 280 and then compare the two.(GTX 280 uses 9 series drivers not good cause it doesn't optimize its true performance.)
A lot of the games today rely "heavily" on shader count as part of the gpu process. The GTX 280 does not have as many shader as GX2, therefore the performance does not scale well, 'as of yet'; not to mention the drivers are practically version 1.0.
In terms of sheer processing power, the GTX 280 f*cking mops the 9800GX2 in the floor. Check 3dmark vantage scores, and other benchmarks thru google).
damn in wat video cards.. have become, i remember buying a riva tnt like 100 years ago, it was flat and all the cores exposed, now videocards are huge giant boxes.
great GPU with a super price tag. its over 650.00 but you get everything you paid for. Although I did some research. If you decide to get this card, I highly recommend you guys buying a new cooler for it or go watercooling because this thing goes up to 90c. That is about 20c higher than the 8800. good luck
this card is good not only because its a little bit better than 9800gx2 but it has physix processor nvidia physix so it`s much better than the rest...i think

Re-do the paste, watch temps.

Yes, there is. It is around 200$ with shipping, and not really worth it.

1 GTX 280 is better than a 9800GX2 in most cases. Go for Tri-SLI.

i dont think SO...... if u have 2x 9800 gx2 thats 4 gpu,s which if u can do math is an extra gpu and these babys run in quad sli
metalmulisha98101 3 years ago
you need to read some specs. 3 280s will rape quad sli. sadly
Jay12341235 3 years ago 2
2x 280s will match or beat 9800GX2s in SLI, especially when it comes to microstutter
Antipwnsurmum 2 years ago
no it isn't. gx2 beats it in about everything until you add the third 280 then that slaughters the gx2

most useless statement i've seen on this page. What about 1 gt 300 > 2x gt200. but aside from that, how do you know, noone knowes for sure.

Hurry up and bring out the new fucking drivers!
With a GPU that big and THAT many transistors, you're murdering its potential.
I think NVIDIA will release new drivers and announce a price drop at the same time.
LessthanJake14 3 years ago
You think Nvidia will come out with more
GTX 200 Series cards in the coming months besides the GTX 280 and GTX 260?
Noniythegamer 3 years ago
I think so, or release new drivers because they are currently being murdered by the 4870.

if u check in fudzilla nvidia is gona release a preformance driver for the 9800GTX
and they said it gana have a massive increase in preformance
my question is will the driver work on a 9800gx2 since its also based on the 92 core

someone needs to put this card in triple SLI and run crysis, i know that one GTX 280 can beat 1 9800 GX2 or 2 9800 GTX in SLI running crysis

ive seen the benchmarks
nope it dosnt beat the 9800gx2 in crysis
