Just yesterday me and my friend were singing this song on the Karaoke! We love this song with all our hearts, when ever we hear it we can't help but get up and dance! Yes, we're VERY addicted to this song! :-)
@singaporeaj hi,don't know if you know this.tony used to work for the british oxygen company at brinsworth, yorkshire,he was an instalation engineer.he used to practice in the works canteen after work.we were all very proud of him.great guy.
we used to sing this im primary school, and follow "sha la la la la la la" with the town name, or our schools football team who were undefeated that season
Great song when I first heard it back in the 70's its a shame the music workd can be so cruel back then. But it came all right in the end some hundred years later when Peter Kay featured it it
hola!...que gusto me produce volver a oír estas melodías de Tony Christie...vienen a mi memoria los gratos recuerdos de mi juventud...gracias y un abrazo de amistad, desde Bogotá Colombia.
Reminds me of being a kid - mum had this record and we played it and played it! Never realised that Tony Christie has such a cheeky smilethough! - every time I watch this I can't help but grin when he smiles at the camera! Fantastic voice and great song : )
It's me again, Mary, and yes I just have to have my "fix" of Tony Christie. It's going to be a long and busy weekend with the kids, shuttling them around and cleaning the house. At least I can dream, can't I? Tony, if you read this, be happy you make this FL housewife happy for a few minutes each day. God bless you!
Also, I think that the actor, Alex O' Loughlin, "Moonlight, "Three Rivers, and now the new "Hawaii 5-0", looks a lot like this Tony. Does anyone else see it! Mary in Palm Bay FL
Wheneven I'm feeling down, like this week, I play this video and dream of Tony Christie! I listen to it a lot and I just can't take my eyes off him! Even though he's as senior citizen now, he'll remain "forever young" in my heart! Hats off to Mr. Fitzgerald!
Tony Christie was one of those early 70's type singers who could actually sing. Listen to his control right throughout his vocal range. Bloody superb. And this song is an absolute pearl.
And let us not forget the version "Performed by Tony Chistie - Mimed by Peter Kay" in aid of charity! If you have not seen it do a search for it - well funny!
@newall7 Tony Christie born Anthony Fitzgerald 4 thirlwall avenue Conisbrough Near Doncaster( NOT )Sheffield FIRST public appearance Conisbrough, Ivanhoe W.M club with partner Dave Bramley (paid off)Worked in offices of British oxygen Sheffield on leaving school.A fine singer, but a very dull person off stage no personality whatsoever,as any one who knows him will admit.
Jay Ashton sings a great version of "Amarillo" in his cabaret (after his amazing Elvis tributes) in the video response above. This is one we all know and love ........
This is the first time I`ve heard the original, only heard it about a 1000 times with hermes house band before - wich is so great. But this song is suprisingly good too. = ) Too bad it`s not the hole song. = l
I lived in Clovis, NM for about 3 years in the early 1980s and I never heard it once. We used to be able to get Amarillo radio stations. I must admit in all that time I visited Amarillo itself only a few times.
But I guess you are right in that it was only popular in the era it was made and that's something I couldn't know.

Oddly, most people who live in Amarillo Texas have never heard of this song!
Usually songs about US towns get some kind of airplay, especially in the town itself - but not this one.
It's a strange case of marketing that runs outside the UK and Europe, but are disregarded for North American release.
It's very common as well for this and other songs to have big hits on one continent and is unheard of on the other.

I disagree. Most people from Amarillo Texas did hear this song in era it was released. I should know. I am from that era and I remember it well.
