I lived in Beijing '95-96 at the China World Trade Centre. I saw legless beggars and destitute immigrants moving in from the interior provinces. There was a rollicking nightlife but there was something staid and oppressive about the capital city. During winter your nose would run like a fountain and your skin would itch almost constantly.
