  • @ johnafielding: the solo (beginning of this movement) is played by a soprano sax. Shostakovich loved saxes a lot. He also put a whole section of saxes in Jazz Suite n.2, giving to the alto sax the most well known and beautiful theme of Shostakovich' music.

  • If you listen closely at 2:00 you can hear the ghosts of Piazzola and Shostakovich dancing together drunk.

  • What instrument is used for the solo in the beginning? Sounds like a soprano sax to me.

  • @johnafielding I think it's an oboe, but I could be wrong.

  • @johnafielding I'm sure it is. There is a Soprano Sax in the following Polka movement.
