@ johnafielding: the solo (beginning of this movement) is played by a soprano sax. Shostakovich loved saxes a lot. He also put a whole section of saxes in Jazz Suite n.2, giving to the alto sax the most well known and beautiful theme of Shostakovich' music.

What instrument is used for the solo in the beginning? Sounds like a soprano sax to me.
