Eh, it's not ironic or hypocritical. At the time, the Boy Scouts of America didn't have a gay-excluding policy.

It's actually a new addition, added in 1991 that gay men could not be Scout leaders. There was no prohibition on gay Scouts until 2004, probably due to the heavy involvement of Mormons in Scouting recently.

A lot of us are very concerned about the puritanical direction the Scouts have taken lately.

The L.D.S. or "Mormon" church officially adopted the Boy Scouts as the activity program for their young men in 1913. That leaves me a bit confused since they have had a heavy involment for almost 100 years...

I would think that the fear of law suits similar to those faced by the Catholic Church regarding pedophile priests lead to the prohibition not to mention the ones B.S.A. had already settled...

@MrExasperation Agreed. Just stumbled into this. Odds are that the Boy Scouts, in its long history, has had members and Scout Masters who have quietly comported themselves with dignity and honor. Homosexuality, I should think, is NOT an automatic equivalency or predisposition to pedophilia.

I was a scout and can tell you that they actively try to push religion on you with everything from the Scout Oath to organized prayer at their meetings.

@lilblake90 - Hate, homophobia, & intolerance aren't the exclusive property of Christianity, even though a lot of people like to pretend that they are. & of course, a lot of people who say that they're " Christian ", AREN'T. Calling the BSA a " Christian organization " or " Christian group " is a very sweeping generalization. I once knew of a respected Scout leader who stated that " Christianity was all garbage ", pretty much. Are all Scouts Christian, then ? I don't think so.

@JWCamp69 Actually, out of the 5 in my patrol that started together and all got eagle at the same time, we are all non-believers. Religion was never pushed on me, I was a part of a very progressive troop. It's like the military, many of the people involved do not agree with the decisions of those up top.
