NB June 2011 A short excerpt from a live film of La Traviata from Romania has just appeared and is now posted on my channel. As there are excerpts from Act 1 and Act 3 there must be more . .
You can add Madame Zeani to the long list of superlative singers who got the recognition of the public... and were quite ignored by the discographic firms, at the side of Adriana Maliponte, Sylvie Valayre, Leyla Gencer, Martine Dupuis, Magda Olivero... and so many others ( and it's true for the men ! ).
It is one of the best Violettas, I have ever heard!!!Gorgeous voice .
Her voice is to die for!!! Awesome performance. It is sad....... perfection like this is very difficult to find these days. A force of nature! Magnificent! ORIGINAL AND UNIQUE. Thank for posting this BEAUTIFUL performance of "Ah, fors' e lui" La Traviata by Verdi. Ms. Zeani " nació para cantar" La Traviata.
@Ilesereine The sound is from the complete Romanian recording:Virginia Zeani, Neculce-Cartis, Elena Simionescu, Ion Buzea, Nicolae Herlea,Vasile Moldoveanu Romanian Opera Bucharest. Jean Bobescu. Electrecord, 1968, After 20 years singing the role she no longer takes the optional high E flat! It sounds far better on the YouTube posting from ariadna2006. I think the dubbed film was made during the 1970s when she was in her late forties Sadly there is no live movie of her as Violetta
A year has passed since I last commented upon this masterpiece. Having listened to another year's worth of various Violettas, I remain convinced that the incomparable Zeani's is the most thrilling rendition extant! Forever, in my mind, the gold standard, against which all others will compete... bravissima, Zeani!!!
This is dubbed..but Virginia, who did 648 Violettas, is a great great lady....She has become my closest ":diva buddy." Still can sing an E flat,by the way....
I know Gheorghiu admires Zeani greatly, as her unique role model, and I can perfectly understand why. Both Romanian divas are known as outstanding, exceptional Violettas! And Toscas as well!
I must have watched and listened to this at least a thousand times; each time is better than the last! Every gesture, expression, pharse & sound is a wonder unto itself! Zeani is incomparable! Devastatingly gorgeous, incredibly talented, she is the most bewitching, totally intoxicating, utterly magnificent creature I've even seen take the stage!
Bravaaaa, Virginia! You are absolutely breathtaking! Sempre Gioia, cara Diva!
Thank you, CharlotteinWeimar, for this very precious gift!
@Aetion If it is from her Romanian 1968 studio recording (by Electrarecord I think), then the cast is entirely Romanian: the tenor Ion Buzea and the baritone Nicolae Herlea.
"In addition to the glorious, Italianate voice, coupled with one of the most flexible techniques of her time, she had a tremendous dramatic range, a special talent for infusing the characters authentic emotions into her singing...... And she was beautiful. My wife Rebecca, upon seeing an old photo, remarked: "She looked like Elizabeth Taylor only more beautiful!" Zeni's eyes in particular were much discussed.(from The Twilight of Belcanto by Leonardo Ciampa) *****beautiful video, TY Charlotte
Delicious, delectable, Zeani's Violetta is absolutely divine!
With a flower in her luxurious, raven hair, a fan, and a radiant smile, Zeani IS the quintessential Violetta...the standard against which all others should be measured!
She doesn't walk; she floats! Gorgeous and graceful, totally expressive, with a luscious sound & incomparable vocality, Zeani is the soul of Violetta. Alfredo never stood a chance!
Heartfelt thank's to CharlottienWeimar for gracious postings!
Apparently you & I are on the same wavelength! This magical creature totally delights my soul; evidently, yours, too! I take much joy in reading your beautifully expressed comments. Thank you!
I'm having lunch with her this coming Friday, and shall tell her that you contacted me and of your comment. That should make her Christmas a merry one! May yours be merry, too! Thank you for the kind contact, and best wishes.
Fabulous! Thank-you, ~You are doing a magnificent job of introducing Miss Zeani to a wider, modern public. I had never heard of her ( to my shame ) before discovering your channel; I adore her now!
Excelenta voce!

Dear Yvonne, is this perhaps mimed to her only studio recording of Traviata, with Romanian cast: Buzea, Herlea (I think) in Bucharest (1968)?

Bella Traviata. De todas maneras me gusta e interesa mucho más la versión de Violetta ofrecida por Maria Callas. La Divina!!!

BRAVA!
BRAVA!
THE BEST TRAVIATA EVER .... REALLY THE BEST INTERPRETATION!
Not to sweet in sound and timbre a real woman with an elegant sexappeal ..... full voice and wonderful looking - UNIVERSAL VIOLETTA
And her singing has been fantastic and individual ....
Only Gheorgiu after her did it in her own way good ....
BUT
never such perfect like LA GRANDE ZEANI!
BRAVA ! BRAVA! BRAVA!

It couldt be said better. She is an amazing Violetta, certainly one of the best ever. Who is the tenor actually? Do you know by any chance please?
