  • hey! this is kool! its like when i learn spanish i saw what you wrote on the board! "me he she it they we them" and all that stuff! haha but i want to know how do your students know what your saying? if they are learning? im guessing you don't speak their language, it sounds kind of tough

english doesn't seem so hard, but there are many ways we say things different than what they may be use to...i guess english IS hard to learn!

  • Keep up the good work. Are there any other videos, besides the 2 that I watched? Do you have a Skype nick? I can use some pointers.

  • I personally think Vincent is doing a good job. Grammar is quite important. Adults tend to fossilize, and fixing the problem will be extremely difficult. Some may not like this old school method, but we are only seeing parts of the curriculum. Keep up the good work ;-)

  • Hey I'm Turkish and I live in the U.S. (texas.) and I learned how to speak enlish in 7 months, I passed my ESL classes with an A+

  • "How often do you write to your son?" What is the object? (Letters) is the object. "Son" is not the object of this sentence. The object is not stated. "Son" is the object of a preposition which is not the same as a direct object of a verb. The direct object of the verb is not stated, though "letters" or "e mails" is the object implied. Perhaps the only value of this lesson is the vocal exchange between teacher and student and not in the grammar itself.

  • my god english a tough language to learn. This guy makes learning english extremely difficult.

  • Great job, you have to orchestrate your lesson differently, depending on the setting. As razzgirl said, experience shows that with a large group of students you need to teach in more of a lecture format. It would, of course, be ideal if all instructors could give each student the majority of the class time to speak. But, alas, this isn't effective in a large class size. Nice work! Great vid.

  • Hey vincedog666, your video was great. Don't pay attention to the negative comments. Anyone with vast teaching experience knows that college/uni ESL is taught differently from private schools. You spoke to your students like they were intelligent adults and not stupid kids who need to be motivated and forced.

  • boo, in your video, you should show all your students to the world; you are the epitome of arrogance and a grammar fanatic.

  • I respect and love my students. The parts that you didn't get to see are the parts where I share jokes with them, console them about life problems and share Thanksgiving dinners with them. I am sorry that you don't like teaching grammar as many ESL teachers do. I still see it as the foundation to build on. In many schools, there are curriculums and end of course that students must take and pass. These students were a part of a college course - not just a language school.

  • You are a little aggressive; you can respect your students AND teach creatively. . Don't just bark "what's the subject" "what's the verb?" endlessly. They aren't babies, but they are people. Correct their mistakes, teach them grammar, respect them, but don't go on autopilot and stress grammar without relevance.

I don't care if this was part of the lesson. I would have dropped my head on the desk and mentally sat those nine minutes out.

  • I teach the old way and I have often been criticized for it - but I find that it works very well for my students. If you hadn't noticed, there were over 40 students in that classroom and each should have a chance to be asked questions. Teaching creatively is nice for other things such as speaking. Too bad everyone wants to try to be "creative" in all classes. Try teaching 3 years in inner city public schools and you would change your mind quickly.

  • I am 15 years old, these year I have done the Pet, an exam from Cambridge university for intermideate levels.

I would like to have a teachar as you.

    Your students are very lucky.

    Really!

  • u oughta be a bit more tolerant and patientwith them. Work on your Teacher talking time. Clearly the grammar explanation was already delivered, so u could ve encouraged your Ss to self correct, or turn to peer correction. That works out. The las resort is correcting students but gently.

  • I like your class, and I would like to ask you to keep posting class videos. Please do not stop. You are great.

    Thanks.

  • I am currently teaching at a university in Japan. I will try to post more video clips. Any requests?

  • HOW TO WRITE A ESSAY?

  • eyz73, Before you start writing an essay, you have to organize your thoughts. Basically, you will need an introduction paragraph that introduces your topic. Next comes the body paragraph/s. This is where you write all the details to your essay. Last, you need a conclusion paragraph. This is where you write your final thoughts.

  • would u teach me plzzz.... i like the way u teach them...are u pilipino? ahihihihihi

  • No, I am Vietnamese-American

  • Hey all. Just so you know, it is common to divide ESL teaching into Speaking/Listening, Reading, and Grammar/Writing classes. Odd are, Vince is teaching the writing/grammar class. That means- don't worry- these students are taking another class to focus on speaking and listening!

  • Thanks for the support! Some negative responses were posted - and they forget that this is not an entire lesson, only part!

  • Hey Vincedog666, I see you are using side by side texts to introduce both the grammar and speech in this video. I also teach English as a Second Language, and absolutely love the challenging role I've undertaken.

Good job on your teaching skills....you rock!

  • Thanks! Side by Side is great for speaking, but I often have to use other resources for grammar explanation!

  • I think it is better to learn both Grammar and speaking, because the power or skill of language is your speaking and writting in the right way, which can evoke an emotion, a visual image, complex idea or a simple truth... this teacher is good in explaining for his students how to recognize the Subject, object in writing the sentences complettely... may I know his name?. thankxxx

  • My name is Vincent Tran. I am Vietnamese-American.

  • The teacher seems like a very nice teacher, but maybe he'll figure out that his method fails after he has to suffer through his video of himself. Maybe somebody suggested he video record himself so that he could see it for himself! Oh no!

  • Please take a look at the other videos. This is only one part of the GRAMMAR lesson. This is NOT a speaking lesson.

  • Teachers want to make the students to write and speak and analyze the language even before they can listen! Children spend a lot of time just listening, then comes speaking, and then, much later writing.

This type of schools basically teach how to sit written English exams, but not how to speak fluently.

  • Most young teachers think that teaching speaking first and then grammar is important. I'm sorry - I don't agree. It's very hard to change how you speak after speaking incorrectly.

  • Now, we never needed to analize our sentences when speaking in real life that way. As babies we didn't study grammar or thought of subjects or pronouns. Perhaps the teacher is not the person to blame here. Maybe he has to follow orders from his superiors in that school. But this video is a good exemple of the old language teaching system.

  • Unfortunately, these students aren't babies. They are adults learning a new language. It is very difficult to learn a new language especially when you are used your own native language's grammar structure. A common problem is that students make literal translations that are often grammatically incorrect.

  • one thing is fluency and other thing - different- is grammatical correction. We all - at some point during our childhood- used to speak fluently and incorrectly, and then , little by little we managed to get rid of our grammatical incorrections and we slowly increased our vocabulary. This process is natural: we all went through it. But the old system of teaching, can't tolerate any incorrection - from the first day- .

  • I agree with those who said that this is not a good lesson. The teacher is not helping the students to get to speak. He is teaching them how to analyze a sentence gramatically.

  • This is not a speaking lesson! It is a grammar lesson!

  • agreed. Blueaspen can't read apparently.

I saw your lesson and another one and I think you're doing a great job.

I am an ESL teacher myself and have had good results with a similar style to you.

  • Thans CaveManD - I try to mix in a little of the old with the new. Problem is that we have too many people trying to throw away the old completely - and experiment on something new! I say - if it ain't broke ....

  • The teacher really needs to slow down and let the students talk more. Listening skills are just as important as speaking skills for the teacher!!! It also sounds like the level of students is perhaps pre-intermediate. Why is it so important to stress VSO?

  • I made a promise to my students on the first day of class. I promised them that I would not speak slowly to them - because it is not natural. I promised that I would speak clearly and that I would repeat as often as they needed me to, but I would never speak slowly to them - I think it is disrespectable to speak to any adult in this way.

  • teacher centered

  • I think it might work if this was something special. If this is done regularly, there are big problems. One of the problems as mentioned before is it probably loses student interest. They lose motivation and sense of accomplishment. Lots of comments are suggesting how much the teacher knows but a teacher who shows off is not helping the students.

  • BORING

  • My students would kill me if I spent nine minutes asking them questions like "What's the subject? What's the object?"

This isn't a lesson! This is one of those boring grammar lectures that students will definitely try to forget as soon as it finishes.

  • Unfortunately, you didn't get to see some of the other lessons. This was part of a lesson in which the students wrote the answers on the board - this part is a review of the lesson.

  • Very informative! I wish we were allowed to teach this to our students at school. Stupid TAKS test. :o/

  • vere nice

  • who cares about VSO? how does that help someone speak english?

  • It helps people to speak English - properly

  • Excellent lesson. The students are writing, speaking, and answering questions. The teacher is very skilled and really knows his stuff. He keeps things moving along. He also knows his students names. I'm very impressed. Great job from Houston!

  • oops I meant teacher centered..cheers by the way thanks!

  • very intense, also very student centered, too much theory..zero laughs---this approach wouldn't go over in Thailand but the teacher knows his stuff..Needs to connect with students ... work on his tone
