Screw the accent!! this is what youtube is all about. It's so ridiculous, it's great. this young performer has balls, in Camden you say. I wonder if Sondheim ever meant it to be sung in a rundown vacant lot. I luv it.
@Spyder8561 I think you misunderstood my response. There is no hate in my heart toward this young mans performance. I think he was very brave for his choice of locale. Please forgive me for coming off a bit cynical. I think he is a good performer and if you are still out there Mr. Bazan.. Bring on more videos.
@Spyder8561 you shouldn't ask stupid people for forgiveness.Plus the guy needs to tighten up his act.Praise him for being good not for being black and poor. The only thing worse than "hate" is the condescension from low expectations He isn't a little kid playing 'grownup'. He seems to be a smart MAN with a lot of guts. But he needs to move beyond that "love me cause I'm a black man trying to make it" mentality. If he's going to act ,he should strive to be the best!!!
@titusact4scene2 I know its late and I just saw this. Its been years since I've done this, when I set out to do these videos, I didnt ask for pity, and I didn't ask for people to care about me because I'm a black actor. The last couple of years the work that I have received, has not been based in any way, shape or form on my race. I love theater, and I want to do it forever. View the videos and any work that you may see me do as an actor performing and not as someone trying to use race
Hi Craig. I really enjoyed your moologue from sweeney and I adored hamlet on the street. I am subscribing to your youtube channel now. Please feel free to come and visit my channel. I am studying cinema and I have some projects in mind that we could discuss.
Have also only watched two, but am wondering if you're exploring expressions of anger through other tools that screaming?
It's your only voice. Make sure you're doing that healthily (no matter how good it feels to emote that way). If the audience is worried about you hurting yourself, then they're not moved and theatre doesn't exist without the audience.
i've only watched two of your pieces on here but i am very impressed thus far. although i am not in the acting field i do know talent when i see it. also, not sure if the locations you choose when reciting certain monologues are intentional, but the tragedy, despair, and anguish of the characters you portray is definitely respective to and exemplified through your choice of scenerey...anyway keep doing what u do (look into acting somewhere in New York, maybe TISCH, NYU) good luck and God Bless!
Oh wow! I can't express how thrilled I was to see you had done a monologue from Sweeney Todd. I was shocked that you performed it a capella, because Sondheim's melodies are so difficult. But I'm impressed at how well you pulled it off. Please keep it up!
I have to agree with dotdotdot11 that trying almost any Sondheim a capella is just gonna be very, very difficult to make work. The melodies are just not in the least bit obvious.(To be sure, there is the occassional Sondheim song with a melody that's easier to pick up, but its very rare) Point is, this is an enormous reach. But, despite that, you've still done good work here, and you should definitely keep it up.
I agree with the shouting thing, it's not working. Instead of constricting your throat, let it open and let the boom emphasize the energy. Your stuff is great though, I hope you get somewhere.
Your other monologues are much better, too much shouting in this one. You made yourself hoarse so you could not get the mood change right when Sweeney starts playing the barber. Also your voice does not suit the role; this is a bass baritone role. If you have to do musicals pick low tenor roles. Your monologue is Hamlet is fantastic, although you need to avoid conducting your speech. Keep up the good work.
Nice performance, Good voice, bad choice of song for a capella work. Sondheim is tricky in so many ways it's pointless to list them. It's very brave to perform his works as audition pieces like this, but it's toeing the line between brave and stupid, especially a capella.
Honestly, unless you have an awesome accompanist and about 4 more testicles than usual, I wouldn't even attempt something like Epiphany like this, and certainly not outside with non-existant acoustics.
what i'd truly like to see from craig is a piece that suits his age. he doesn't have to sacrifice his theatrical style by choosing material that suits his type. but kudos to him for stretching himself at such a young age.
so in essence, he did a decent job, but you're correct in saying it was predominantly filled with rage. what's beautiful about this piece is that rage is only one of the many emotions sweeney is feeling. there is much sorrow and conflict.
just throwin it out there, but most if not every piece that sondheim has written is full of conflicted emotions and has as much breadth as it has depth. which is why young people are advised not to use his material for auditions. no doubt this man featured above has talent, but his skill needs tuning, which is what his college education will hopefully do for him.
Craig, that was really moving. Musicals, like 'Sweeny Todd' are not easy to do acapella, and you infused that song with so much passion and love. Great work!
I'm an actress, in San Francisco, and 'Sweeny Todd' will be at ACT at the end of the month...I hope that Michael Cerveris and Patty LaPone see this video. Beautiful.
He's a great actor. And his voice isn't bad at all. But I'd like to see him do something that wasn't under the influence of rage. It's pretty simple to do something angry but to do sorrow or conflicted emotions, that takes skill. Give him something with depth. I'm sure he'd do it well. Everything we've seen is anger. Let's see something else.
Your diction is nearly PERFECT!What a welcome change from the majority of actors today who slur, mumble, or whisper their dialogue. You are destined for Broadway.
i'm telling you this kid, er, young man, is one smart cookie and sooo talented. NEVER STOP PERFORMING.....you rock! anyone into starting a fan club for him? :o)
Despite all the negativity portrayed on the tv, regarding celebrities and their crazy diversions. It is a breath of fresh air to come in here, and see true talent like yours, Craig Bazan, shine through. By sharing your time on youtube with all, you pass on inspiration that covers us all. You have proven a rose can grow among weeds. Brilliant piece! You will be someone great! You have that potential to lead a great nation. You have my vote!
I few slip ups, but brilliant, fantastic, and awesome. Off the hook, off the chain, and dope as hell. Not to masculine though, but nevertheless a monologue connoisseur. I want to see you do king lear, much ado about nothing, or the tempest. Not to see if you can, but to see you shine.
This song's really hard to do because its quick, and its harder to see without music behind it. ....But y'know, it really made me want to sing Sweeney Todd. XD I could be Mrs. Lovitt! Very nice.
It's good. Way to go!
